Praised by the Washington Post as “one of the most acclaimed experimental musicians of the last decade,” Braxton has been writing and performing music under his own name and collaboratively, under various group titles, since the mid-1990s. He is the former front man of experimental rock band Battles, whose debut album Mirrored was both popular and influential. Since departing Battles in 2010, Braxton has focused on composing music for HIVE, as well as composing commissioned pieces for ensembles such as The Bang on a Can All Stars, Kronos Quartet, Alarm Will Sound, and Brooklyn Rider. In 2012, he collaborated with Philip Glass—performing as a duo for the festival series All Tomorrow’s Parties, as well as remixing Glass’ work for the REWORK remix album.

Jan Swinburne is a Canadian visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice makes use of traditional and digital media. Swinburne approaches all media from a painter’s sensibility and this drives her aesthetic. At times her work mutates into large-scale, site-sensitive installations and projects. An experimental approach to art is central to her practice.
 

As a video/sound artist, Swinburne’s interest is oriented to meta-exposure and image degeneration in the form of music/video-painting. Apart from creating original soundtracks, Swinburne collaborates with musician/composers, primarily, Philippe Gerber (JOHN 3:16). 

Jan Swinburne's videos have been screened in Brooklyn/New York City (Experi-MENTAL Festival 6), New Jersey (Filmideo/Index Art Centre) and Washington DC (Auditory Learning w/ BLK TAG)Toronto (Vector festival, Art On The Screens)Art On The Screens (Mississauga), Photophobia (Art Gallery Of Hamilton). The term Phonography has been in vogue and used by many field recordists in the past few years. 

Phonography brings to mind the physical aspects of phonographs, i.e.: vinyl, stylus/needle, grooves that represent the waves encoded in a physical substrate of vinyl.

Another popular activity amoung field recordists is the 'sound walk', where armed with a microphone and recorder a recordist documents the acoustic signature of a location.

But there is something missing whilst capturing only the acoustic vibrations of a location. 

The ground surface also contains much information embedded in it via decisions made by construction, community needs, urban planners, landscapers, etc. 

So this project combines the aspects of a sound walk with the materialism of the phonograph.

The contributing sound artists all used microphones as a phonograph stylus by dragging them on a surface whilst recording the miniature imperfections in a surface thereby capturing hidden aspects of a location.
