The Sound of Resistance

The MMARSS project explores math, literacy, humanities, and physics through music. We will make connections between the sound, music, and resonance of Resistance Movements.  We will analyze sound behavior using Algebra and Trigonometry and use Ethnic Studies curriculum to explore major Resistance Movements. Students will make strong connections between the influence of sound and movement, and relate elements of frequency, amplitude and resonance to social resistance and justice. These themes will be connected with the class novel: Reservation Blues, by Sherman Alexie. Throughout the course, students will gain a strong understanding of music literacy, proficiency and performance through music workshops in Drums, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Vocals. Through these integrated elements, students will create a band, write a song, and perform a concert-exhibition at the conclusion of the semester.

Resonance of Revolution - The Race to Equality

The MMARSS project explores social justice issues, mathematical concepts, literacy and scientific principles through music. We will recognize and explore patterns in history, number sequences, functions and music.  We will also analyze sound acoustics and intensity, recording technology, electricity and musical ability. Throughout the course, students will understand how the evolution of music mirrors the ever-changing patterns in society, past and present through the lense of Hip Hop. We will compose, record and perform original songs that reflect what we have explored throughout the semester.

In the Fall semester of 2017, MMARSS students will analyze systems of power, who has it, and why. Students will make connections between societal systems of power and the physics of electricity and circuits. We will examine how imbalances of power drive change in society as well as electrical flow within circuits. Students will also use data and statistics to analyze imbalances of power within specific cities and how it relates to housing inequality in the United States. Through analysis of the novel Evicted, by Matthew Desmond, students will make connections to poverty and profit in American cities while listening to, analyzing, and creating music that address these issues. To culminate, they will compose, record, and perform original songs that reflect what they have explored throughout the semester.

Guerilla Radio: How we Communicate and build Solidarity & Resistance

In the MMARSS Spring semester of 2018, we will analyze how communication systems help build solidarity and resistance movements. Through analysis of the novel Radio Free Vermont, by Bill McKibben, students will explore radio, cell phone and fiber optics networks and use systems of equations and inequalities to analyze this technology’s  impact in influencing a peoples' resistance. We will explore the El Salvador Civil War (FMNL) and the Black Lives Matter movement in order to understand how contradictions in society are communicated in order to a build solidarity and resistance amongst the people. We will listen to, analyze, and create music that addresses these issues. To culminate, we will compose, record, and perform original songs that reflect what we have explored throughout the semester.

The MMARSS (Music & Math Alive in Resistance to Social Systems) Project explores mathematical concepts, ethnic studies curriculum, scientific principles, and literacy through Music. This semester we will study the sound, music, and narratives surrounding Identity. We will differentiate cause and correlation with bivariate data, analyze sound intensity using logarithms and use ethnic studies to explore the narratives that shape our Identity.  Students will make connections between the influence of sound and story-telling, and relate elements of harmonics and resonance to social justice. Students will engage in music workshops, audio production, and video production in order to tell our stories. To culminate, we will compose, record, and perform original songs that reflect what we have explored throughout the semester.

Downtown Continuation High School is one of two continuation schools in the San Francisco Unified School District charged with serving students who have not experienced success in the district’s comprehensive high schools. We offer a small-school environment and a staff dedicated to serving students with a variety of needs, ability levels, academic deficiencies, talents, and aspirations.


The MMARSS Project explores social justice issues, mathematical concepts, literacy and scientific principles through Music. Students engage in music workshops, production, and praxis. To culminate, we will compose, record, and perform original songs that reflect what we have explored throughout the semester.
