For the 14th episode of our series, we host Kiernan Abbott from @fragmentsinwax, a project that started started in 2020 focusing on long lost sounds from decades ago, through mixes, digging and selling impeccably curated records.

Jordan and Tom of in-form return with a long overdue mix of downer Folk/AOR plucked from the depths of the wilderness. The duo have taken some well earned time away from social media and have been slowly building an archive of untouched music, soon to be added to the Repress demand lists on discogs.

This mix is truly one for the mid winter walk, ice cold acoustics and rocky climbs through a meander of outsider wonders that are untested until now.

Blue Rock - in-form (#7)

For this epsiode we have a perfect mix to kick off the year from Callum Duff and Holden Bigg, two friends from London. The pair have been scouring record fares, charity shops and put together a wonderful selection of private rock, folk and AOR from around the globe which is an homage of sorts to their friendship.

This week, we're excited to present a synth-laden, 80s-inspired mix by special guest @simfossil:

“The theme of this mix is a certain new age sound and flavor from 80s recordings. I traced this sound through the work of many Japanese artists (hence the Shibas on the cover) and I would say this became the backbone of the mix: music by the legendary Haruomi Hosono, Yuji Toriyama and many more. The vibe is unique and experimental, a new age-y, jazz-rock-y type of deal. I’ve been quite inspired for a long time by the character and creativity of this era; something about the guitar and instrumentation gives it that special touch. Personally, as a producer, I’m a big fan of Yamaha instruments, in particular the DX7, which I’ve come to associate with this time in music. Though Japanese artists are the central thread, I’ve made a kind of fusion of many different things that to me capture this special flavor.”

Marius tells us the stories of his native fusion and jazz from Germany, all the way to the most outernational AOR and Cosmic Folk. Guitar driven, where instrumentation is sometimes more crucial than the lyrics themselves...

Keeping it personal, Marius built the mix around some hometown classics in and amongst some of his more recent discoveries.

This month's show is a fertile mix of obscure jazz, folk, rock and vernacular music put together by Vancouver based collector and producer Nate Drobner who operates under the alias Astrological and the duo Potatoehead People. He also pilots a fantastic Youtube channel called MoogMelodiya where he uploads the many amazing discoveries he finds primarily at local thrift shops. I’ve been looking forward to having Nate make a mix for the show for a while, and he delivered!
