Haiku poetry and music.

Naviar Haiku is a music project in which artists are invited to make new music inspired by a weekly assigned haiku poem. Participation is free and there are no limitations in the songs’ length or genre.

Haiku is a traditional and short form of Japanese poetry consisting of three lines: it’s about moments of objective experience which lead to deeper considerations about life and nature. The juxtaposition of two images or ideas and the consequent creation of a gap in the imagery gives the reader (or, in this case, the musician) the chance to complete the poem with his/her own interpretation.

This project is about expanding the meaning of a poem beyond its words, and the active role of the reader in haiku poetry, unique in the literary realm, is what inspired this project.

Maya Deren (1917 - 1961) is considered one of true pioneers of experimental film yet unlike many of the film makers she influenced ( Jean-Luc Godard, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch) her work is rarely experienced outside of academic and film school environments. As part of Kirby and Ward’s continuing investigation into the important (and often overlooked) role of women in the history of Contemporary Art  Discontinued Space: The Cinema of Maya Deren will present several of Deren’s short movies with original live scores written by Kirby, Ward and Banks.

Deren employed a vast array of cinematic devices (looping, reversing, overlaying and time manipulation) to create vignettes that focused on graphic and kinetic form rather than straightforward narrative. Conceptually the work examines rhythm, isolation, social constructs, movement and ritual, all of which is underpinned by the notion of the inner world and its disconnection from the space of everyday life. 

It is the conceptual framework of Deren’s cinema that informs the scores produced for this project. Rather than compositions that ‘soundtrack’ the  action and the visual imagery the music reflects and explores Deren’s philosophical beliefs and her desire to immerse her audience in a world that is barely hinted at in everyday life yet sits just under the skin of reality. 

The performance by Kirby, Ward and Banks showcases the 7 major short films Deren produced from 1943 to 1958.

Floating lanterns

OK- so this didn't turn out in the direction I thought it would. 
To me, floating lanterns have an association with death, as they are so often lit in memory of a loved one. And while the sentiment might start as a quiet and reflective memorial, raw grief can quickly push that feeling aside and find it's true voice. Setting those words free is a hugely important part of greiving and healing.  
So, a very different reading of this haiku than is probably intended. 
The bed is a modular synth drone, which sets the peaceful scene, over which an improvised organ solo develops, beginning almost church-like, and then gradually becoming more bluesy and gritty, before finally subsiding. 

Hashimoto Takako (1899-1963) was a poet of the Shōwa period and editor of the haiku magazine Shichiyō. Even though Takako studied under Seishi Yamaguchi for some time, she was the first woman among the major modern haiku poets to receive her training in haiku mainly from another woman, Hisajo.

Finding My Voice (naviarhaiku401 )

It's the Fourth ("IV") because this song has seen many permutations, and I've raided this pattern for bits of other tracks — like "Hope" on my last album. But it finally gets its due. I think it's about love or need or infatuation. Maybe even fear and admiration, but like, in a lightweight way.

Simple Questions lyrics:

Saw her the other day
The most beautiful one
A girl I`ve not in my wildest dreams thought I`d ever meet

And so far I`m right
`Cause I didnt have the guts
To walk her up,and get in touch,asking some simple questions:

I am still looking, trying and experimenting, I really like electronic ambient for many years, but it only works as a live percussionist. In short, nothing is black or white:)
In today's hectic world I need quiet sounds and the vast majority of songs created at night, so are my compositions such as they are.

My tracks is based on the absolute freedom of the use of sound. Arises as if I painted a picture. In the head is the base, and then adding the details here and there.
As well as if I were his music told the story.
