Happa joins our series this week with a killer mix laden with scattered beats and snarling bass lines - skilfully blending jungle, breaks, drum & bass and more in a combination that's simultaneously nostalgic and futuristic.

Born and bred in Leeds and now London-based, Happa stormed onto the scene from an early age with support from Loefah, Mary Anne Hobbs and Four Tet. With an impressive string of releases and producer credits including the recent Timedance compilation 'Sharpen, Moving' he's just announced that his new EP ‘Explorations In Music For Dancing Vol.2' is due for release next week.

SPE:C boss Darwin links with London-based DJ and fellow sub-bass fiend Parris. Their b2b is expectedly heavy as they race through tracks from the likes of LCY and LSDXOXO, before meandering through misty-eyed vibes thanks to a touch of trance.

Test subject 1.19 @tangerine_tangerine launches into a murky space consumed by chaos and dark matter. Arcs of aggression and tendrils of rage are implemented with deadly precision to enact a no-holds-barred aural onslaught from all directions. An incredible expression of the human psyche in a state of frustration and confusion - come well prepared for the high-intensity skirmish set to ensue.

"I felt like I was observing a take on the (emotional) representation of chaos and frustration. Messy, smudgy, and confusing! Inspiration for this mix definitely came from a period recently when I was churning through ZULI’s music and mixes. He does not hold back whatsoever and makes way for a lot of angry and high-intensity sounds. This image seems to evoke similar feelings to what I experience when listening to his selections so I decided to take a similar approach of not thinking about holding back whatsoever, which is a really cool opportunity with a mix since there is no pressure to conform to a context other than your own whim." Over the past few years, object blue has since become one of electronic music’s most crucial new artists. After seeing Nico play a flawless live set at a @musiccompanyco at the Meat Market a few weeks ago, I then went on to discover his plethora of stunning works, which he's been releasing since 2015. The local Melbourne/ Naarm producer has featured on labels Orange Milk Records (with another album on the label slated for later this year),  Daisart and Music Company, and also works under the alias Haji K.

A lil break in the pod series leads us to New York based duo Ma Sha Ru, stepping up for number 49. They've taken no prisoners with this 1, 50 minutes of heavy bass beltas. Sorta tunes that make you crave to wanna hear em on a system.  Big ups to them, a real corka of a mix :)

AM: What have you been doing recently? 

Setting up a new studio! haha We've been travelling to a few places last year to be together since COVID travel restrictions made things different. It feels nice to be finally back in NYC and have a proper set up. We also just released a new split EP with Ayesha on Kindergarten Records and a track on Pressure Dome compilation. Overall, we've been working on finishing more projects to come later in the year + preparing a new live set. Very busy and very much enjoying this! :)


AM: Your recent track for Pressure Dome as great, what’s the process behind your production? 

The process behind this track was actually atypical. The lyrics were written during our lockdown time in Minsk, Belarus. We talk about our willingness not to conform to rules that society puts on you and how to find a way to stay out of these limitations. The beat of the track was made during a short stay on an island in Italy during last Spring and deeply inspired by the freedom of the surroundings. There are water field recordings at the beginning of the track that were made on the spot. In this case we didn't have our machines with us since we were not in our studio, so everything was made in the box. Usually we involve the use of MPC 3000 and Bass Station II on our productions. 


AM: Where & how did you record the mix? Was there a theme for it as such? 

We recorded it in our apartment in Queens, NY. We recently moved a DJ booth to the living room, bought some big plants and set up neon color lights, so the vibes were just right! The set up is two XDJs 700, Pioneer DJM 600, a pair of KRK monitors. It's actually mad hot in NYC now, so we had a constant sound of the old AC working behind our backs but we think we still made it no matter how loud it was haha The idea behind the mix was to play some new stuff we got during this month and a few forthcoming bits from our friends. So happy to see everybody doing their thing - big up to our friends killing it with the tunes and labels!


AM: What have ya been listening to and digging recently?

Really enjoying the projects of our Kindergarten crew - Ayesha, Despina, Drummy, Stolen Velour and Ziyiz got something very hot in the works/forthcoming! We also just got back from a trip to Mexico CIty and felt very inspired by the Infinite Machine team and El Irreal Veintiuno productions. Of course, always big up to Sorry Records, Pressure Dome and Shubzin!

AM: Whats next for ya in 2021?

We have 2 EPs planned for the rest of the year/early 2022 and 4 compilations so far :) Going to start working on a new live set soon too, so we are looking forward to the future!

I’ve told this story before but this time I have a mix to go with it so I’ll tell it again…Twenty years ago, during the early noughties when garage was mutating into grime I DJ’d in a crew with a load of mc’s called Riot Squad. We thought we were Nottingham's version of the Pay As U Go Cartel.

UK music was super fertile around those years and this was the first little pocket of my record buying “career” I found myself truly obsessed with. Parties, tape packs and radio was starting to get muckier with the focus shifting to MC’s. You could smell the influence that infamous little club up the road in Sheffield had on me a mile off and while the roots were starting to poke through, dubstep was still a few years away.. 

Decided to record a mix of the records I was playing up here during those times. Some of them are well known, some of them I don’t even know what the fuck they are. All bangers though and all have been getting played for nearly 20 years so excuse the noise, crackles and pops. x
