Act One

Psytrance

The Mechanical Species project was created by Dahni Strauss in 2012, initially greatly inspired by the old school sound of Infected Mushroom, Glowing Flame and Peak Records, and even classical music. Fused with various elements from all of his musical journeys, the common theme of his productions today is the attempt to evoke a strong sense of story. Non-verbal tales without linear messages. A story where the need for explanation is extinguished, attempting of temporarily stopping the mind from its constant interpretation of meaning. Synthesis is something heavily entertained in his creation and he's currently exploring the deep audionomic space of wavetable synthesis, preferably combined with frequency modulation. This 'December Goa Adventures' mix was made and inspired during fun times together with the crew of his home label Forestdelic in India!

In 2011 he discovered psytrance at the legendary Glade festival and never looked back. After producing, gigging internationally and releasing psytrance for many years he released his debut full length album on Digital Shaman records which gained support all over the globe. After his CD dropped, and having spent six years working with Digital Shamans, he decided it was time to move on. After a brief hiatus he is super happy and excited to be back ready to shake some speakers with his good mates at Bom Shanka Music.

When he was around 16, he started playing music instruments (first guitar, then bass and finally learned how to play drums by himself). SG4RY is an anthropologist, general adventurist, humorist, academic scholar and psychedelic trance DJ with more than one decade of international experience, residing in Bavaria's beautiful capital Munich. Creating a journey sui generis for his listeners is his biggest aspiration. Psychedelic Trance has to be approached from different angles, using the many colourful vibrations it offers. Therefore, sG4rY likes to play sets as long as possible in order to draw from the different musical influences he gets from befriended artists, musicians and freaks around the globe. This mix starts with a rather high bpm and slowly builds down towards the "usual" range of Sangoma Records.

MoDem Festival‬ in Croatia is widely considered one of the best, and most important, festivals on the psytrance calendar. It’s influence on the festival scene cannot be understated. When I started making this music, I promised myself that, before I was 30, I wanted to play on the Hive stage. Well, 5 days before my 30th birthday, I had the honour of doing just that. It did not disappoint, and it was the best dancefloor I have ever had the privilege of experiencing.

I decided early on that this was where I was going to debut my new album (forthcoming soon on Bom Shanka Music) and record the entire set. So, here it is – the full video of my set on Thursday 8th August 13:30-15:00 on the Hive.

Thank you to everyone that danced, everyone that filmed and everyone that gave me emotional support in the stress of finishing the tracks before the gig! A huge thank you to Valentino Vert3x,  Tomislav, Mike, Val, Bom Shanka Music, Wildthings Records crew and everyone that made my week the best ever!

It is finally time to release my second album: Mio (along with a long ramble about it)

This has been an incredible journey to make over the last two years and I am overjoyed to share it with you. Each track was made with intention and purpose both musically and personally to create a Psytrance album that is designed to be listened to from start to finish – as well as work individually on dancefloors. Over the coming weeks, after release, I will take you all through each track and its meaning and creation.

I streamed the writing of all these tracks on Twitch as I strongly believe that music is meant to be a shared experience and build community. It was amazing to let everybody into the process and to have their live feedback and share knowledge between all of us.

Part of what makes music so much fun for me is the learning and the challenge to push myself and push the music. I wanted to do that with this album and tried to use unique methods of sound design in each track with a clear concept of the track before even starting – part of this challenge was to not use FM at all throughout the whole thing.

The album is named Mio for my young Nephew whom I adore. It was meant to be released on his 4th birthday, but due to distributor-based-boring-administrative reasons got delayed by a couple of weeks. He is moving further away from me and this felt like a great opportunity to toast him!

I have had the BEST time making this album and have loved seeing people’s reactions on the dancefloor to it so thank you all and I really hope that you enjoy it and understand the intentions behind it.

A huge thanks to Al Shanka  for the mastering, Struan  for the amazing artwork everyone at Bom Shanka Music, Tadhg and Josh Eritas for being great friends and dealing with my crippling lack of self confidence and bloody all of yous!

Act One - Mio (Full album mix)

This is a mix of the psytrance tracks from the new album of ACT ONE. The album was designed to be listened to in full, and this mix does not include the "interlude" tracks. Jack wanted to try and push himself and the genre with this album and challenged himself to use unique methods of sound design and arrangement, not worrying about the stylistic norms and making sure that every track had a musical concept before he even started. The album will be coming on digital and CD on 29th November and is named after his nephew - "Mio". Act One is the Psytrance project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Jack Allsopp. Coming from the UK, he took his musical upbringing (learning piano and trombone from an early age) and fused it with the UK electronic music he surrounded himself with. Teaching himself to produce drum and bass he had his first releases and gigs before finding Psytrance at the age of 17. He took the production knowledge he had gained and used it to create a unique style of Psytrance, taking influence from all spectrums of music and crafting original sound design methods. After his debut album on Digital Shamans, he signed with the Bom Shanka crew and his sets became a breath of fresh air in the Psytrance scene with his now legendary sound design.
