Sub Focus Live from The Roundhouse

For this weeks podcast we were determined to bring the sound closer to home. We really wanted to share a London vibe with our listeners around the world. Thus we went in search of someone we thought would aptly represent the capital and Basher was the natural choice. Based in London, Basher has been on our radar for a while now, rapidly forging a reputation  as one of the most technically advanced producers to hit the  D&B scene in recent years.

As at home in the studio as behind the decks, Basher’s skills are the end result of endless practice as he sought to perfect his sound over almost 2 decades. With his roots firmly grounded in LDN, Basher first became a dance music enthusiast at the young age of just twelve. He obtained a set of turntables and relinquished his first love of Hardcore and Jungle Drum & Bass. The adolescent Basher gathered an endless collection of records over the years and began his first club performances and radio shows soon after, This is where he got to fine - tune his live mixing skills and started to gain credibility in and around London. However, his progression was not moving at the pace that he anticipated so he took to the studio to jump-start his music career on a more professional level. Having received quality advice from respected DJ’s and producers alike, Basher held back his sound in the depth of his studio until he was confident in his production. Once he felt he had achieved the sound he desired Basher was ready to start sending his tracks to major record labels in the Drum & Bass scene. His career as an event filling artist started with a phone call from the Ram Records boss himself. This was due to a glimpse of the soon to become infamous track Leachcraft. Soon after, Andy C snapped at the chance to bring Basher into the fold for Ram Records and his tracks have been receiving consistent airplay on the worlds premier radio stations ever since. 
With numerous successful releases under his belt including his debut album "Transmission" on Ram Records and remixes for legendary artists such as DJ Hype, Audio Bullys, E-Z Rollers and Cause for Concern to name but a few. Now with his own imprint Proximity Recordings established and a fresh 2 track release entitled ‘Trojan/Weep’ out now on Ram sister label Program, we thought the time was right to share his skills on the decks with our fans. Alongside Ed Rush, Matt Quinn (who you’ll undoubtedly know better under his DJ name, Optical) has helped sculpt the drum & bass scene’s multifarious experimentations for nearly two decades now. As producers they pioneered the techstep sound, making crisp and explosive d&b sing on the defining <em>Wormhole</em> album, but as bosses of Virus Recordings they’ve managed to continually stay propulsive releasing music from people like Audio, Optiv & BTK, The Upbeats, Noisia and many many more. A mainstay here, the duo’s forceful and dominating sets are always surefire highlights which is why, ahead of their set headlining Room Two this Friday, we asked Optical to put together an hour long mix which demonstrates a) why we hold them in such high regard and b) why Optical’s still one of the most quietly inventive production forces in modern drum & bass.

Hit The Floor

Scoping a methodical landscape, Gerra & Stone have begun to take charge of an underground dominion which was already steep with competition. They’ve slowly invaded cyberspace, becoming a focal point for adept drum & bass whilst remaining a talking point across the online platforms. 

With metallic thumps slicing through waiflike samples, even the intro to second track ‘Vengeance’ is intimidating. Twisted breakbeats create a forward motion that pushes you deeper and deeper into its grasp, whilst the track’s title plays out in between bars of finely-tuned anarchy. This is contemporary drum & bass at its finest; the kind its forefather’s dreamt of. Precisely laid out, yet paying homage to its underground roots by being fiercely unapologetic. 

So yet again, it’s time to get with the Program, as this round certainly goes to Gerra & Stone. Their set to catapult themselves to the top this New Year... Whilst leaving no prisoners.

Ironically, given the fact that they've got “Tactics” in their name, Mob Tactics came about quite by chance.

Mark was producing as The Funktion, and Luke, in his role as label manager for RUN DNB, liked what he heard and signed some of his tracks. It became apparent that Mark and Luke's taste in music was ridiculously similar and, over the course of a few weekends, they decided to get in each others studios and see what happened.

What happened was “Gunjack” & “Stick-up Kid”, two tunes which would go on to be supported by some of the biggest deejays in the business, and become the first Mob Tactics release. That was back in 2010 and, in the intervening years, these two have seemingly never let the momentum drop for a moment.

Early releases on Mob Tactics' own Tactical Recordings label, like “Kansas” and “Fugazi”, established their brand of drum & bass. Complex and technical, but with an irresistible edge of funk aimed straight at the dancefloor, no wonder they quickly caught the ear of the likes of Andy C, DJ Hype, Crissy Criss, and Chase & Status.

And these luminaries weren't just offering deejay support for Mob Tactics tunes, they wanted to sign them. DJ Hype's Playaz grabbed the massive Elephant Man collab “Crazy Hype”, Andy C secured “Wolf Trap” for the “Nightlife 6” compilation, and since then has come back for more several times. Eatbrain, MTA, C4C, Charge, Viper...the list of huge imprints who've wanted a taste of the Mob Tactics sound goes on.

Recent years have seen Mob Tactics revel in creative freedom. Releases like the “Body Check EP” and the Ryme Tyme-laced “Tweakers” have demonstrated multiple facets to their sound. Unconstrained by sub-genre limitations, the one thread that binds all their work is that commitment to making ravers move.

Anyone who's witnessed one of their blazing deejay sets anywhere around the globe will testify to the vibes and energy Mob Tactics bring to a dance. And, even since opening up their personal dub collection to the masses with their “Mob Vaults” releases on BandCamp, the amount of firepower they're packing on their USBs shows no sign of diminishing.

So, this is Mob Tactics. Signed and certified by some of the biggest deejays and labels in the scene, we've got a feeling they're just getting started...
