Animal Picnic & Aaryon have already made their mark in terms of stamping their strengths as a collaboration team, offering up a unique combination of flare and talent. It’s no surprise to see them come together again to bring you Steyoyoke Black’s next release. Titled Vortex, this EP delivers a total of four original tracks, each of them possessing their own imprint and presence that engages the listener with every twist and turn.

First up is ‘Vortex’, which jumps straight to the point of divulging the tracks overall foreboding vibe. The bass line is unyielding throughout the entire track and with such brazen synth riffs, Vortex seems to pursue and command your attention. Be prepared for an onslaught of power and raw vigor.

‘Particles of God’ is the second track on the EP and with its cave like echoes, underwater inflections and metallic drums, it depicts an almost aquatic industrial soundscape. The track has a fierce pulsing energy to it and a monster break down that mimics this intensity perfectly.

The third track ‘Orion’ pursues a rolling more melodic sound then any of the other tracks on the EP. Playful piano riffs are masterly crafted around flurries of snappy percussion and textured grooves. ‘Orion’ allows you to bask in its elevating melodies and distinguished charm.

‘Rhapsody’ is the fourth and last track to feature on ‘Vortex’. Arousing a sense of mystery with its cool calm attitude, this track radiates an unflinching seductive flow. Hypnotic bass and stabbing synths prod and poke, all whilst endeavouring to lead you deeper into darker territories.

20 Years Of Freerange - 5 x Vinyl Box Set LP

June 2016 sees Freerange Records celebrate 20 years at the top. The label, run by Jamie ‘Jimpster’ Odell and Tom Roberts, is marking the occasion with the summer release of a carefully curated and lovingly assembled 20 track, five vinyl box set featuring exclusive new music from associates old and new, as well as with a worldwide events series.

Over the last two decades, generations of DJs and dancers have gotten down to the Freerange sound. Initially that was a mix of sample-heavy productions incorporating live musicians, flirtations with the broken beat sound and some ground breaking fidget house cuts from Switch and Trevor Loveys. Then, and most enduringly, the label settled into a rich vein of deep house. Shur-I-Kan, Kirk Degiorgio, Milton Jackson, Trackheadz, Stimming as well as Jimpster ushered in this most recent chapter, and in turn the label has helped make household names of many more previously unknown talents from Detroit Swindle to Manuel Tur, Andre Lodemann to Tony Lionni. Wherever you look amongst the hundreds of EP and LP releases on Freerange, you will find nuance and evolution, dance floor sensibility and genuine emotional impact.

That same sense of timelessness characterises this new compilation, which is packed with great music from the likes of KiNK, Pittsburgh Track Authority, Kuniyuki, Kito Jempere, Soul of Hex, Clavis, Detroit Swindle, and of course Jimpster himself, as well as a whole host of other Freerange regulars. There are many highlights across the 20 track package including a warm and skipping house cut from Bulgarian live specialist KiNK, a typically slow burning and beautifully arcing epic from Andre Lodemann and spaced out jack tracks from classically inclined Liverpudlian Tony Lionni.

Big name stars like Detroit Swindle return in style with a robust and acid laced banger, the ever-underrated Milton Jackson builds something melodically magical and Pittsburgh Track Authority layer up majestic string stabs and rubbery bass into soul infused future music. Jimpster himself bolsters the whole package both solo and with Luv Jam as well as remixing Tim Toh, and on each occasion proves why he is one of the pivotal figures of the UK deep house scene.

Few labels make it to twenty releases let alone twenty years strong. Often doing so without making any real fuss, now is the time that Freerange Records deserves its time in the spotlight, and this compilation more than proves that.

Dinky has come forward with “Casa”, the first single from her forthcoming album due out this autumn on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels label. The tracks were recorded whilst she was resting at home, pregnant with her second son. Due to a medical risk, Dinky was forced to stay in bed and decided to keep herself busy by writing music.

Whilst the original features summery, almost blissful vocal hooks interspersed with acid bass gurgles, Satori’s remix takes thing down an altogether more turbulent route. Initially ambient and spaced out, it then morphs into a driving techno track, combined with reverberating pads and choral wails.

August marks Swiss duo Animal Trainer’s debut full release on Berlin’s mobilee with a new EP entitled ‘Yumala’.
When not running their club Hive in Zurich, Animal Trainer aka Adrian Flavor and Samy Jackson have had a string of impressive releases on renowned labels such as My Favourite Robot, Stil Vor Talent and Katermukke, not to mention their own imprint Hive Audio. Their fusion of tech-driven, slow-rave club anthems and impassioned, vocal led house has earned them hard-won recognition across Europe’s club circuit.

Kicking off with the energy-fuelled ‘Yumala’ that demonstrates Animal Trainer’s trademark slow- rave style, the cut blends together punchy bass stabs and murky synth drones building up to powerful chord streaks, heightened further by patterned sonic notes and chattering hi-hats. ‘Function None’ then provides an equally club-driven, energetic number yet with darker tones dominated by ominous, hypnotic vocals to round off the package in a thoroughly compelling style.

The first original titled “Bahai” comes with clattering percussion and plucked synth stabs. Thrilling bass swells and an intricate melody with emotional energy add finishing touches to this shimmering masterpiece that unfolds into a crescendo of dancefloor bliss.

Second is “Skylon” and UNER’s second original track, slow building with a stripped back groove that leaves space for the poignant pads leading the track. Progressive, its structure introduces a variety of melodies that each change the mood of this epic journey. Fans of UNER will be familiar with his style of melodic mastery will not be disappointed to hear his breathtaking trademark sound!

Track three is the Monkey Safari remix of “Skylon” that from the offset has a toughened sound with thudding bass stabs and rigid percussion. Growling low end pads create dark atmosphere, and the originals pads are used as sparse textures rather than lead sounds. Ferocious and menacing but still hypnotic, this alternative version provides perfect contrast to the uplifting original.
