Almost exactly five years to the day since her critically acclaimed Techno Monkey EP first did its damage across international airwaves and packed, sweaty warehouses, Berlin-based artiste and Kuukou Records label boss Simina Grigoriu now looks to breathe fresh life into one of the most iconic records in her expansive career discography, as she announces a Techno Monkey remix project of colossal proportions. 

Over the course of this year, Simina and the Kuukou Records team will be releasing a total of nine huge remixes of the 2016 original, brought to you by a carefully curated selection of the most exciting names in electronic names, new and old. Due for worldwide release on Friday, July 9, the campaign launches with the first star-studded EP, which comes complete with an eclectic trio of contributions from electronic music royalty, Paul Kalkbrenner, American techno maven Camea and Kuukou Records favourite, Hito. Inaugurating the three-pronged package is the man himself, Paul Kalkbrenner. A true legend of electronic music and the mastermind behind timeless global chart-topping hits including Sky and Sand, No Goodbye and Parachute, the internationally lauded Berlin Calling icon commences proceedings in true Kalkbrenner style, as he takes us on a hypnotic seven-minute journey across an up-tempo landscape of driving rhythms, expertly layered textures, and ethereal undulating timbres.

Next up to the plate is US-born, Berlin-based techno sensation, Camea. With an array of diverse releases clocked on the likes of Bpitch, M_nus, Plus 8, Get Physical, Clink Recordings and her very own Neverwhere over the course of her esteemed fifteen-year career, the über-talented artists finally makes her long-awaited debut on Kuukou, as she re-paints Grigoriu’s original with her own frenzied palate of dystopian, sci-fi electronica.

Last but by no means least, and making her eagerly-anticipated return to Kuukou Records, is Japanese icon and Model1 ambassador, Hito. Still riding high off the back of her massive label debut in October 2020 with Kobe, the prolific producer and Watergate regular rounds off Volume 1 in immaculate style as she delivers a slick amalgamation of punchy percussion, growling bass and trippy samples for her playful Hito’s Monkey In The Jungle Remix.

Speaking about the project, Simina commented:
“I love that this project has come to fruition—it’s been a long time in the making. My original Techno Monkey track was part of the first EP I released on Kuukou six years ago. I was a bit wary of releasing nine different remixes of my original but I was also excited to see what everyone would do with it. Each artist has brought his or her personal flavour to the project and I’m super excited to share this with you guys!”

Gregor Tresher kicks off 2015 looking to break new soil with his first ever full release for John Digweed's Bedrock Records.   

Last year was as hectic as ever for the Gregor and he came into it on high from the success of his artist album Nightcolours and having closed out 2013 by releasing an astonishing Laurent Garnier remix of the title track, on his own imprint.   Time to relax a little maybe? Not a chance. January saw the remixed version of the album hit the stores and this was backed within a few weeks by 'Taurus', Gregor's enticing collaboration with Petar Dundov. The summer saw him remix the Chymera classic 'Shadowdancer' and he closed 2014 with the superb 'Midas / Disturber' double-header.   

Somewhat of a musical chameleon, Tresher is as at home creating deeper shades of house for the likes of Moon Harbour and Ovum as he is techno rhythms for Music Man, Cocoon and Drumcode.   With label boss Digweed a huge fan, Bedrock is yet another perfect fit for the German and he opens his account with the mighty, melodic and Kraken'esque 'Goliath' and the razor-sharp lightning bolt that is 'Stormblade'.

Martin Kleinert, founder and producer of the label NEW PORT surprises with the first release GROYNE EP. The late 2014 launched labels, style fits perfectly into the pure Techno genre. As a well settled Berliner by choice Martin Kleinert has never forgotten his roots. This can be recognized if you notice the labels name and art work. The first EP on NEW PORT provides straight forward direction and shows what to expect from upcoming releases and events.

GROYNE: The deep and powerful Kick is present from the very beginning and just slowly the driving elements of the tune are coming more and more into focus. Finally a fascinating Hi-Hat group on top of a metallic appearing Clap gets the tune really going. The sound wave made of the elements Synth, Athmo and the irresistibly pumping pulse out of Drums is moving towards climax - unstoppable, until the groyne suddenly lets it collapse into its very basic components.

OPEN GROUND: The deep and powerful Kick, surrounded by a mystical Athmo slowly gets the breathe-Hi-Hat out of the background just to be melted with the Bass-Drum. This gets you into the mood of another dark night without any limits. On the 2 and the 4 the smith relentlessly hits his hammer onto the metal while the vibrant insecure Synth carefully channels into perception. As soon as you think this is followed by silence, the clashing percussion gets your for the final showdown.

Our favourite Berlin based techno princess Simina Grigoriu is back on FORM with this new hypnotizing, trippy and groovy track 'Slush Fund'.
Her city's fellow citizens Alfred Heinrichs and Moe Danger took on the remix duty, and delivered two amazingly good although very different versions.
