Desert Dwellers is the convergence of music producers Amani Friend and Treavor Moontribe, who honed their individual crafts in the mystical deserts of California and New Mexico, long before electronic music reached mainstream. Amani and Treavor combine the raw sounds of the natural world, wrapped in dance-floor and chill-out productions; blending deep bass, earthy percussion, etheric voices, and cross-cultural instrumentation into a sonic incense for the mind and body. Desert Dwellers’ unique global sounds are a bridge between worlds, and their label Desert Trax has become a platform to spotlight similar alchemical artists. 
 
Brought together in the late ‘90s through the legendary Moontribe gatherings, in 2019 the duo celebrated their 20th anniversary of making music together, adding depth to their reputation as a pioneering and prolific downtempo, psybass, and tribal-house act from the United States. The culmination of two decades of partnership has forged their Beatport number 1 selling electronica album BREATH, out on Black Swan Sounds, which features more than 20 musicians and vocalists over a 10-track nomadic journey.
 
Desert Dwellers’ studio output is matched only by their extensive touring history, which juxtaposes performances at America’s most iconic festivals like Symbiosis, Lightning in a Bottle, Burning Man, and Coachella, with high-powered sets at the biggest trance festivals around the world; BOOM in Portugal and Rainbow Serpent in Australia. Desert Dwellers are equally at home in the clubs as they are in the yoga studios, and the jungles, deserts, and mountains of far-flung international festivals.

I've been recording sets all winter long but errors have been holding me back from uploading them. I am shaking my perfectionism off and just accepting that I am still very much learning this craft. There is too much beautiful music out there that I gotta share it with y'all. I am going to do my best to record more regular sets from here on out. 

I hope you enjoy this mix that is inspired by this season of new life, warmth, and togetherness. As we round the corner on Covid here in Canada, I am beyond excited about the good times ahead: copious amounts of boogying, rekindled relationships, potlucks, hugs. It is times like these that foster our appreciation for the little things. 

I am grateful for all of you who've done your part to protect your communities, all of you who've gone above and beyond to serve others, all of you who've stayed in touch, and for modern medicine that has gotten us to this point. 

It is sobering to think about how many countries are still in the thick of the pandemic. Let it be a reminder of the privilege colonialism has and continues to afford us in the West.

Desayuno con mochilero #1

I had a stellar time playing some beats at Red Light Ramen on halloween. It is one of my favourite restaurants in Nellytown because of their delicious food and attention to local, ethical ingredients. I am grateful for the buds who came and wiggled in their seats, and for the opportunity to play at this cozy haven. I played an extra half an hour for the night owls and I am sharing this recording because I love sharing quality tunes with quality humans. I hope you enjoy the music. This mix is made up of songs I've been playing and listening to this summer, as well as some all-time favorite oldies. As usual, I got carried away with the slow house I love groovin' to and stayed in the range of 85-110bpm. I will be recording a more upbeat mix in the fall. mochilero is first and foremost a passionate and dedicated dancer, who with each set, aims to share melodies & rhythms for liberatory movement & collective joy. Inspired by the mystery, interconnectedness, and diversity of the natural world, mochilero weaves together melodic, uplifting and soulful grooves to evoke a feeling of oneness on the dance floor. He plays tasteful melodic, deep, progressive, minimal, and downtempo house with rays of breaks, acid, tech, & disco to create emotive, hypnotic, and dynamic sonic journeys.

mochilero hosts inclusive parties, ecstatic dances, and community events on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territories of the Sinixt (Nelson, BC). The events foster an experience of collective joy, while focusing on centring marginalized communities and uplifting organizations that work toward social and environmental justice. His events are intended for dance lovers of any and every background, and are inspired by Fusion, Burning Man, Boom, and the open air culture in Köln, Germany, that led him to fall deep in love with the rich tradition of house music.
