Uncertainty, excitement, expectations and hope define pretty well what’s behind the launchment of a space mission. Everything has been calculated,  measured and prepared, but reality is always unpredictable, so results and success are never guaranteed. Experience and intuition may help in order to reach the desired planet’s orbit. Italian artist Alessandro Russo, known as Evod (@evodmusic), has used both to deliver Sonde Spaziali EP, the new release on Exoplanets’ 30D Sub label, a tribute to four different spatial projects that have taken place in the last decades from different parts of the world. 

Techno has been, almost since its inception, an excellent soundtrack for spatial exploration, as experimenting and having no boundaries in creation are key to start the trip. In Sonde Spaziali, Evod, fully aware of techno’s potential, recreates all the complex emotions kept into the challenge  of  reaching  space,  being able to bring us back to Earth to share and spread the discoveries, fully dance floor compatible. The 60th instalment in our FWP series is brought to us by Melbourne based, Fergus Sweetland.

Fergus is a producer and DJ with over 10 years experience, drawing particular enjoyment from tones of groove and rhythm. His first experience of techno as a genre came through seeing DVS1, which Fergus says "really set the tone for the kind of music I'm interested in and my philosophy of techno music."

"DJ'ing and producing is when I really enter a flow state, it just naturally gels with me."

"I'm all about sticking with your vision and doing things differently."

Fergus also runs the successful podcast and label, Bomphcast which has grown to become a prominent platform in the emerging contemporary techno scene, having first started 5 years ago with the aim to share quality mixes from artists from home and abroad.

Fergus is a big believer in the Melbourne scene and wants to keep contributing to the local culture and keep putting the city on the map as a hot spot for techno.

We first heard Lucas Marchal (dc11) on his web channel where he shares modular videos, working with very precise and deep modules including verbos, buchla red panels, random source and many other brands. We immediately thought his tracks would fit perfectly on the label so we asked him to cook something up for us.

The 4 tracks he sent us were recorded during the beginning of 2020, straight from the modular with no post processing apart from mastering. At that time, he focused on hypnotic, minimalist and heavy loops on his modular while taking inspiration from Joe Roberts’s psychedelic paintings.

The release name “Immersion” reflects exactly the feeling you have when listening to the tracks, black hole loops, evolving psychedelic textures driven by strong and groovy bass will guide you from beginning to end.
