The album opens with "Parade," an upbeat synth-funk track that features a crisp piano intro and dreamy synth leads. The following "Night Shift," with groovy basslines and mellow electric piano chords, represents the album concept as well as other jazz-funkish tracks such as "Stepping Out," "Aquarius," and "Skyline." "Love Supreme," an elegant orchestral disco, will take you to the imaginary dancefloor (of the '70s). "Midnight Express," an uplifting broken-beats jam featuring trumpet and flute leads and a horn section, gives you a thrill ride. "Rendezvous" and "Lumiere" are future-funk/vaporwave tracks reminiscent of '80s R&B mellow grooves.

Dark Model - Ran (Resistance) (Apocalyptic/Orchestral Electronica/Classical/Intense/Choir)

This is an epic and dramatic Orchestral Electronica track, which has a dark piano intro and builds dramatically with full orchestral arrangement and massive electronic beats.

It may differ from what you would expect from the title, but this track was not inspired by the famous movie “Broken Arrow.” Not limited to the feudal era in Japan or the Middle Ages in Europe, there have been many parables and anecdotes where “arrows” come up as symbols of human bonds and wills such as loyalty, trust, creed, or even fighting spirit. Those symbolic connotations inspired me. Having said that, what I wanted to incorporate in this music was, “Your (fighting) spirit never dies even if your arrows are broken.” That is the opposite of most contexts where people figuratively use broken arrows.

- About Dark Model -

Dark Model is the latest project of award-winning music producer Tatsuya Oe, focused on epic, emotional, and beat-oriented orchestral electronic music. Oe was born in Hiroshima, Japan and is now residing in New York. Oe has an exceedingly diverse background in music, which has continued to evolve over the course of his twenty-year career. He has released several hundred signature tracks under the names Captain Funk, OE, and Dark Model, while also having completed remixes and collaborative projects with other artists such as James Brown, Serge Gainsbourg, Ron Sexsmith, Chic, Simon Lebon, and Yoshihide Otomo. Music journalists have referred to Oe as the “Remix Wizard,” and the “Modern Renaissance Man,” “…sailing into the uncharted waters of dance music.” Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) described his music as “F***ing insane!”

Dark Model's first album (2014) was nominated for the 14th Annual Independent Music Awards (The IMAs) in the Dance/Electronica Album category. Dark Model and Oe's music has been featured in numerous media projects, from box office film trailers like “Elysium”, “The Paperboy”, and "Money Monster," to advertising campaigns for Lexus, Verizon "Droid," Xbox "Forza Motorsport 5", and to a contemporary dance choreography by Northern Ballet.

- "Musical Narratives” -

The music of Dark Model is based on a concept that Oe has unvaryingly embraced throughout his career: incorporating a diverse range of musical ideas and elements into what he calls “Musical Narratives." As can be heard in preceding releases such as Captain Funk's “Songs of the Siren,” chosen as "The Year in Music" by Billboard magazine, Oe has a keen interest in “building and telling a story through music.” In this album, "Saga," not only does the whole album form as one epic story consisting of thematic tracks (as represented by the adventurous "Avalon," "Survivors," the apocalyptic and uplifting "Rage and Redemptions," "Danse Macabre," and the introspective "Dawn of Resurrection"), but some tracks such as “Inferno Suite,” “Storm Goddess,” and “Elegy 1” are also composed as a self-contained "suite," a sequence of short musical dramas.

Oe likens his music production style to making an animated film. Just as one director/animator would do “visually,” he develops several characters, emotions, and actions “musically” into one time-based work. While it is striking that Dark Model’s music features much more cinematic elements and orchestral arrangements than he did previously, it could be said that Oe continues to push forward the concept of “Musical Narratives” under this new project. Unlike so-called “scores,” his priority with Dark Model is to create music which stands on its own (like pop music does) and tells a story, not as subordinate to any specific visual or motion elements.
