Diasiva provide us with #007 in our podcast series, an all Diasiva playlist that includes tracks spanning their 7 year discography + a collection of unreleased material.

Produced in a symbiosis of perfectly unaligned and uncalibrated modular synthesis, “Thirst” is Diasiva pushing current DSP technology to its edges, their sound is informed by a weekly meeting of sonic experimentation and exploration in their Neukölln studio, drawing inspiration from the detritus of West Berlin. “Thirst” represents the ongoing evolution of Diasiva from sledge-hammer logic into expression in motion, welding IDM & deconstructed breaks to pure sonic abstraction, embracing visions of a brighter future yet leading curious eyes toward the ever present darkness, holding the hand of the likeminded, marching together toward the abyss.

Diasiva are Monolog and Swarm Intelligence, formed in 2011 for the first edition of Burn The Machine Festival in Subland, Berlin, playing numerous live sets around Berlin after this, including the following Burn the Machine. In 2016, they released their debut LP “Doublefade” on the seminal Ohm Resistance label, later that year, they released “Sabo” on Monolog & Subtrakt imprint, 2017 saw their Station 1805 EP released on Acroplane. The duo now returns for their debut EP on Instruments of Discipline.

Who is Toh Imago - the artist behind ‘Nord Noir’? We already knew him at InFiné, but let’s preserve a pure listening experience because now he is, and will be: Toh Imago.

Inspired by Sorj Chalandon’s novel “Le jour d’avant” which describes the dark reality of miners in the North of France’s, Toh Imago dove into the deserted coal mines that surround him to create ‘Nord Noir.’ A hypnotic album that draws a landscape inhabited by ghosts, where harmonic fumes swallow the rhythm of the machines. If you hop into the cart through the tunnels with Toh Imago, it might be a shaky ride.

However, as Daniel Avery or Blawan, our new man demonstrates that techno, in the beautiful and modern sense of the term, often rises from the smoke and ash of the industrial world’s decay.

Modern Cathedrals was founded in Detroit in 2015. While the stylistic attributes of the label could be described as avant-garde, drone-influenced techno, the core of the label lies much deeper than dance music. While interpretations are as varied as listeners, the label’s founder Altstadt Echo regards Modern Cathedrals as a geographically contextualized exploration of the struggle to find meaning in a world that is fundamentally indifferent to this basic human desire. 

In older European cities that were once dominated by religious thought, cathedrals loom over the skyline and serve as a reminder of the ideas that used to give life meaning; ideas that many of us have implicitly left behind. Detroit, as a struggling post-industrial city, is involved in a constant dialogue between desperate hope and gradual decay. Excluding pockets of downtown commercialization, it is the scattered shells of empty manufacturing facilities that elicit the feeling that this city also placed its own worth in an idea that turned out to be a false promise. In this way, they serve as the city’s true cathedrals.    

The artists releasing on Modern Cathedrals utilize experimental techno as a medium to explore the creation of meaning without reliance on the dogmatic pursuit of temporary ideals. The result is functional-but-challenging dance music crafted without the need for a saccharine reliance on tried-and-true techno tropes or the fabricated themes of peace and love that plagued rave music. Instead, it attempts to create an authentic interpretation of the imperfect human experience that we all live, both in Detroit and beyond.
