On ACEN027, Amazinggaijin follows a series of releases on his Good Delivery Record imprint with four experimental club tracks for All Centre.

The EP opens with Construction Block. The track is inspired by Amazinggaijin’s stay in Berlin’s Rudolfkiez, an area which has been undergoing heavy gentrification, surrounding him with construction projects. Subtle sound design morphs underneath a series of driving kicks, before a machinic hi-hat pattern reminiscent of a jackhammer destroying the pavement propels the track forward. Shifts in reverb mutate the space of the track, building a captivating and disorientating atmosphere in this stripped-down drum tool.

On the second track Cacophonie, Amazinggaijin is joined by Irish producer Lighght. Cacophonie, which means “a harsh discordant mixture of sounds” in French, is a study on drawing on different sources of sound and making them work together (including a Virtual Sitar that Gaijin gives heavy treatment). It’s a match made in heaven between the Irish & French producers, as they push the boundaries between electro-acoustic and club music. The track begins with an entrancing, hypnotic melody created by tweaking a Korg Volca sample machine before a compelling drum pattern is introduced with subtle pitch-shifted hi-hats. A metallic, percussive melody enters the mix, morphing throughout the track and gradually growing in intensity.

Oxygen Tank begins with the same hypnotic chord progression but raises the tempo, bringing a grime influence into the drum programming and introducing a sino-grime melody. The rhythms of the melodies and drums shift around each other throughout, and a soaring siren-like synth enters the mix towards the end of the track.

The record ends with digital-only track The Strength Within, an ambient record underpinned by an atmospheric droning pad, occasionally interrupted by pieces of intricate, subtle sound design. The Franco-Congolese producer captures what loneliness induced by an atomized society who “celebrated” one year under a global pandemic feels like.

"The influence and presence of trap and rap in dance/experimental is obviously massive, and the lines between genres are more blurred than ever. HAJJ, however, says this is a recent thing; “I find that the electronic scene in France is just starting to encourage the integration of this culture. Not so long ago people insulted me when I played rap/trap in my sets.”

The underpinning idea for this compilation brought electronic producers not explicitly of that world to unpick whatever boundaries remain and contribute tracks for a mixtape – while a few of the artists are more obviously ready to “play the game” and already make music which exists pretty close to this horizon, this has been a challenge to think creatively for a few of the other artists invited."

A regular at Seoul’s ‘Cakeshop’ and member of LGBTQ collective Shade Seoul, NET GALA’s SVBKVLT debut is named after Shinpageuk (신파극), a form of theatre from 20th century Korea. In contemporary context, Shinpa is a synonym for ‘tears and overwhelming emotions,’ but when it was first introduced to Korea, Shinpa was used to express progressive political views, cover social issues, and later the melodramatic domestic tragedies. There is a vast gap between the past and current context of Shinpa, and as such there has been a lot of mistranslation or misconception between the two.

After their first EP [re:FLEX*ion] (NBDKNW – 2019), NET GALA spent time researching Shinpa, finding parallels between the work they were making and the traditional theater style. The emotional, dramatic nature of Shinpa echoed the exaggerated affection of ‘pop’ – in which NET GALA searches for the impact on one’s own narrative and emotion. The ‘mistranslation’ applied to the terms history is reflected in the changing course between the two EPs – how one can reinterpret or warp one ‘lost’ cultural concept into another.

From the stretched-out ‘The Ha Dance’ sample combined with traditional Korean percussion and 808s on ‘Shpiral’, to the sample of a Korean lesbian protester struggling to claim her existence through the blasting drums on Dodomzit, ‘신파 SHINPA’ is NET GALA’s interpretation of the Shinpageuk. The EP is packaged with remixes from Amazondotcom, ZULI and Menzi further reinterpreting the original work.

After releasing tracks on record labels such as Comic Sans Records
and Tustance, Modern Collapse, a duo composed of Gabriel de Sercey and Hugo Fabry, are back with the debut album, based on
deconstructing sonic elements of club music through an immersive experience.

For this project, they felt like they needed to break away from the club side to propose a more personal and introspective project, hence the title Anti-Club Music Club.

This summer, the release of Vanessa Amara's album Poses has shaken
them a bit in its "patchwork" aspect of experimental sounds. Therefore, they started to build their own project with the same intention to propose a brief but intense auditory journey that can be listened to from beginning to end, with an emphasis on emotions and sound design.

The last track Kendall is a bonus track, the second part of one of the tracks of the project which is a transition towards a return to the club, with less chaotic rhythms and a more classical structure.

The result is meant to be cyclical, even inscribed in a kind of sound ellipse, with spoken words and recurring sound elements that appear at key moments.

It is a project that aims to challenge the way we consider club music, by deconstructing its basis and showing that creation and destruction can be two faces of the same coin.
