‘Motion’ is the new EP release on PAN’s sublabel CODES from Belgian producer SKY H1.

Having previously collaborated with producers and collectives such as Bala Club and Creamcake, Brussels-based SKY H1 has since performed at the likes of multi-media 3HD Festival and Amsterdam’s Sonic Acts to high acclaim for her distinctly forward-thinking sound.

Drawing from a background of widely-varying musical tastes from Ambient to Grime, her own work is an amalgamation of emotive compositions of orchestral Elysian synths, often displaced with sparse percussive elements.

The new record, ‘Motion’ is a highly personal endeavour, constructed from the results of a turbulent time - where she describes it as ‘a flash of her emotional state over the last few months’. “It signi-fies leaving behind a period in my life and stepping into something new.” She explains.

Moving through bleak soundscapes layering vaporous choral synths, ethereal vocals and glassy, lucid tones crafted in complex structures, the record bears moments of melancholy as well as joy on tracks like ‘Tell Me’ and ‘I Think I Am’. “It's about going through the different stages of grief and accepting the positive effects the loss of someone can have on you.” She says. “It's about experiencing an intensely emotional time with a lot of ups and downs, and I think this is transparent in the way the tracks are ordered.”.

Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt is irrepressible. Creativity flows from the Dutchman like water from a tap: if he’s not making his own fan magazines, writing and performing in web movies about space weed, drawing album art based on his own dreams or making his own synths, he’s probably making music. That music comes under an intricate web of aliases on labels all over the world , and at Dekmantel we recently signed him up as Occult Orientated Crime, one of his more ambient leaning projects, for the May album Just a Clown on Crack. It was a dark and abstract affair and in that spirit Legowelt recorded us a podcast of similarly subversive and immersive sounds. 

Over the course of 80 minutes, the mix has you suspended in outer space as all manner of spaceships and alien life forms drift by your window. Rippling synths and smeared pads, gurgling machines and silky melodies all stretch out into the distance and range from rueful and reflective to rather more meaning later on. It is the perfect soundtrack to sooth busy modern minds.

Equiknoxx are one of the hottest, most innovative dancehall squads from Jamaica right now; Bird Sound Power is their debut collective show of strength, packing 12 avant, crooked riddims by core members Gavsborg and Time Cow, plus Bobby Blackbird and Kofi Knoxx, with vocals by Kemikal, Shanique Marie and J.O.E. (R.I.P).
The set was parsed and pieced together by Jon K & Demdike Stare , and now thanks to link ups via Swing Ting’s Balraj Samrai (a longtime livicated supporter), it is issued on Demdike’s DDS imprint, replete with Jon K’s sleeve design.
Easily identified by the squawking bird idents peppering their cuts, Equiknoxx productions have been big in the dance since Gavin Blair a.k.a. Gavsborg produced Busy Signal’s billboard hit Step Out in 2005, followed by key instrumentals for Beenie Man, Aidonia, Masicka, and T.O.K. - with many released on 7” thru their Equiknoxx Musiq label, and some of which, such as Aidonia’s Negative, are included in this set.
Bird Sound Power arguably marks up the most striking riddim album you’ll hear from JA in 2016, weighted with the potential to open up perceptions of current dancehall thanks to the mad character and broad reference points of its producers, encompassing King Jammy’s foundational digi-dub and Dave Kelly’s Mad House sound as much as rugged New York hip hop and the wigged-out, feminine pressure of Virginia Beach’s Timbaland or The Neptunes.
The oldest tune inside dates to 2009, but the rest are relatively recent dancehall mutations, including a number of exclusives produced in the last 12 months. Each one reps for Equiknoxx’s unique aspects, such as Jordan Chung a.k.a. Time Cow’s brilliantly bizarre, layered arrangements of film samples, sawn-off hooks and digi-tight beats, whilst also a result of as their distinguished family vibe,
Bird Sound Power exists in a paradox, contemporary but classic, and with as much potential to turn new heads onto current JA sounds as Mowax’s Now Thing set back in 2001, which remains a key touchstone for all fwd looking producers..
