○ Officium & Tzii — Space Time Beyond

Faith In Strangers’ was written and produced between January 2013 and June 2014, and was edited and sequenced in late July this year. Making use of on an array of instruments, field recordings, found sounds and vocal treatments, it’s a largely analogue variant of hi-tech production styles arcing from the dissonant to the sublime. The first two tracks recorded during these early sessions bookend the release, the opener ‘Time Away’ featuring Euphonium played by Kim Holly Thorpe and last track ‘Missing’ a contribution by Stott’s occasional vocal collaborator Alison Skidmore who also appeared on 2012’s ‘Luxury Problems’. Between these two points ‘Faith In Strangers’ heads off from the sparse and infected ‘Violence’ to the broken, downcast pop of ‘On Oath’ and the motorik, driving melancholy of ‘Science & Industry’ - three vocal tracks built around that angular production style that imbues proceedings with both a pioneering spirit and a resonating sense of familiarity. Things take a sharp turn with ‘No Surrender’- a sparkling analogue jam making way for a tough, smudged rhythmic assault, while ‘How It Was’ refracts sweaty Warehouse signatures and ‘Damage’ finds the sweet spot between RZA’s classic ‘Ghost Dog’ and Terror Danjah at his most brutal. ‘Faith in Strangers’ is next and offers perhaps the most beautiful and open track here, its vocal hook and chiming melody bound to the rest of the album via the almost inaudible hum of Stott’s mixing desk. It provides a haze of warmth and nostalgia that ties the nine loose joints that make up the LP into the most memorable and oddly cohesive of Stott’s career to date, built and rendered in the spirit of those rare albums that straddle innovation and tradition through darkness and light.

Dj HeadSick is a musician Kolya Dolgov, a member of projects "Payta" and "Prodelki Bolnoy Golovy". His new album New Life is a formatted and pressed cube of great lot of experiences, memories, pain, and placidity. But it's beautiful because only poets can simply make any picture pause and contemplate on any moment, no matter what it’s like.

"It doesn't matter why something changes in life – what's important is finding the strength to accept any outcome, both good and bad," says Kolya.

The album New Life is about life, big changes, relationships, and about different places, of course. It covers wide geography – being born in Murmansk, spending childhood in Sevastopol, studying in Krasnodar and then moving to Moscow due to a glowing interest in music and its language.

"This album is packed with light and hope, pain and offences, and immense love," says the author. Listening to the album is like reading Tolstoy's "Childhood," but it's all about Kolya. Here he is watching the cartoon "Kotenok po imeni Gav", here he is falling in love, here he is listening to jungle music for the first time, here he is losing his life's foundations and finding them again in deep broken beats.

Автором шестого по счету двойного альбома в коллекции лейбла стал житель Санкт-Петербурга, продюсер и мультиинструменталист Флэти (@producedbyflaty),  представляющий свой проект АЭМ «Ритм-Каскад». Музыка на пластинке продолжает развитие стилистического вектора, заложенного петербуржцем еще на одном из первых релизов ГОСТ ЗВУК, трехтрековом сингле, одним из главных хитов которого стала композиция «Вспоминафония», по праву считающаяся чем-то вроде неофициального гимна лейбла. На «Литье» Флэти продолжает собственные эксперименты в смежных областях различных стилей танцевальной музыки, где его четкий, выверенный подход к синтезу звука и аранжировке в очередной раз приводит разнородные жанровые элементы к общему знаменателю, практически идеальному «золотому сечению». Традиционно уделяя особое внимание многочисленным деталям и «глубокой» звуковой атмосфере, на «Литье» продюсер из Санкт-Петербурга проектирует по-особенному пластичные ритмические структуры, будто бы имеющие естественную природу — пульс партий ударных и перкуссий здесь плавный и текучий, практически без всяческого намека на какого-либо рода технологизацию. Следы поисков безупречной гармонической пропорции также можно обнаружить и в симметричной конструкции альбома — на двух пластинках здесь записаны двенадцать композиций, по три на каждую из сторон.

On the sixth double LP in the label's catalogue the Saint Petersburg-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Flaty (@producedbyflaty) presents another phase in the development of his project AEM «Rhythm-Cascade». The sound of the record is kept true to the stylistic vector defined by the artist way back on one of the first Gost Zvuk's releases, a three-tracker with its main hit «Vspominafoniya» («Memoryphonics») currently enjoying a well-deserved status as the de facto anthem of the label. On his new album «Lit'yo» («Metal casting») Flaty continues to experiment with various dance music genres, attempting to bring diverse stylistic features to a common denominator, a perfect «golden ratio». With his strict and thorough approach to sound synthesis and arrangement, keen attention to detail and «deep» sound atmosphere, here he designs rhythmic structures almost organic, the pulse of percussion smooth and fluid without a slightest hint of technological engineering. The spirit of this quest for flawless harmonic proportion is also present in the symmetric design of the album: two records hold twelve tracks, three on each side.

Clemency presents References - her debut EP for Finn’s 2 B REAL. Three deceptively simple percussive pieces, both awkward and elegant.

Each track on the EP feels almost living and breathing; sparse, dissonant synths meet intricate drums and juddering basslines, effortlessly creating momentum and motion across the record.

‘References’ is Bethany Clements Patrick’s first EP under the Clemency alias. She’s a regular behind the decks at Partisan, Soup Kitchen & The White Hotel, and co-runs Manchester’s Mutualism club night, label & NTS show.

Using causality and repetition as a conceptual framework, the release comes with a selection of Clemency’s own references for the record, which includes poetry, literature, geographic coordinates, music and cosmetics - presented at clemencyreferenc.es

From a Solid to a Liquid

Proceeding missions into the no-mans-land of noise and jungle, Demdike Stare adopt a typically schizoid stance at House and Techno tempos on the 3rd Testpressing. Their A-side 'Eulogy' is a square bass devotional to the soul of deep Chicago and Detroit house, most notably the magic of Mr Fingers and Terrence Dixon. A constantly morphing, Escher-like bassline folds in and out of itself, accented with offset kicks and washed out with effervescent, barely-there synth strokes. It's lip-smacking sunset/sunrise gear and a perfect set-up for the flipside shocker. Destined to become a classic in Demdike's canon, 'Dyslogy' comes off like an early 'Waveform Transmission' or H&M bomb spanked by Anthony Shakir; an evil, droning intro ratchets the tension for martial kicks and darkcore chords before a feral breakbeat romps loose like the spirit of '93 unchained. They really don't make 'em like this any more…
