Acote is the new alias belonging to Toronto artist Jeff-Antoine Cote (fka BSMNT).  With his debut release for Modern Math titled "Northern Flight EP (MM009)" he offers a melodically sparse & intricately rich percussive piece that finds the label returning to the cavernous dance floor minded sounds that frequented its early years as an event series in the late 00's.  British sound system culture influence is apparent throughout the release.  Acote's use of contrasting modular garage shuffles within a half time techno framework on "Northern Flight" & "Turns" pay homage to early post dubstep/UK techno crossover while "Progress" switches the tempo to a late night floor focussed autonomic style dnb roller.  With their ninth release Modern Math maintain the deep atmospherics they've become known for throughout their catalog while reminding listeners of the labels early roots on the dance floor.

The release represents a complete rethink about what it means to compile and commission music in the streaming era – and the tracks and seductively dark atmospheres conjured as a result are exploring all kinds of new sonic territory, too. In short, the cream of leftfield electronic talent have been given a brief: to take the phrase “in Death's dream kingdom”, or the whole of T.S. Eliot's poem The Hollow Men from which it comes, as inspiration.

The resulting 25 tracks will be released, day by day, together with further artist information, to build into the full work. Not an album in the traditional sense, certainly more than just a playlist, it brings together a seriously diverse array of talents into a coherent whole with a vivid aesthetic reverberating through it. It occupies a similar space to the great home listening electronica acts of the 90s – Future Sound Of London, Global Communication, the Artificial Intelligence axis – but there are no throwbacks here: this is radical in sound and thought. Dark music for dark times.

»the title ›and IV (inertia)‹ refers to a fictionalized successor of the baksan neutrino telescope in the caucasus region. at first, it has been an idea for a novel, based on the consideration that it is impossible to deal with the topic of a ›lebensraum‹ like berlin without being hit by stylization – so I had to experiment with strategies of fiction.«

with »and IV (inertia)«, grischa lichtenberger presents his first full length record on raster-noton after his participation in the unun-series. for his musical production, he uses field recordings of his environment which are manipulated and broken down to their bare nakedness until only fragments are left. apart from analogue sources, he also uses digital sound data which is likewise turned and twisted until the boundaries between analogue and digital are blurred.

the arrangement of these atomic elements results in a rather rough and brute, machine-like cut-up sound with an outstanding dynamic – almost none. it seems like that the 21 tracks only consist of a minimal set of elements, but which are rearranged in a virtuous manner and with a high degree of variation. broken beats and dribbling basses allude to downbeat tunes, let one stumble because of their arhythmicity, to eventually take up the underlying groove again. equally, there are fierce and harsh technoid elements. and towards the second part of the record, there is also room for new developments where more introverted and airy songs take over.

lichtenberger’s musical production on »and IV (inertia)« goes in line with his general artistic work, which also comprises other artistic genres such as installations and paintings. there is a mental attitude behind all this, and while the music sounds abstract, one may still identify his personal note. In this way, »and IV (inertia)« is the extension of a concept he already started with his »~treibgut« ep (r-n112), »to define aspects of legitimation for an artistic work in engagement with the concreteness of one’s living situation.«

City High Fantasy is a remote collaboration of two prolific and distinct electronic musicians, both alumni of Dream Catalogue label, which released Pixelord’s third album Hypnorave in 2018, and several albums by ambient/experimental musician Sangam from Manchester, UK in the past four years.

The musical journey goes from a highly energetic, dark synth rhythm’n’rave with complex beat structures, further drifting the listener towards melancholic, abstract ambient soundscapes, stretched and frozen in time, with barely noticeable and slowly pulsating beat buried underneath ethereal melodies and hypnagogic synth pads, and back to more energetic percussions and beats. Timeless and timely, an exploration of inner freedom and the intricate ways two creative personalities find to co-exist in the unique, newly created sound universe.


This EP provides a peculiar introspective in the joint creative process of two distinct, self-sufficient artists. Both Pixelord and Sangam have a highly recognizable artistic ‘signature,’ they speak in very different, original musical languages. Somehow, these two private, individualistic, subjective inner creativities found a way to work together, to populate each other’s musical worlds with new sound entities, bringing their own different atmospheres, speaking all new tongues, amalgamating alien concepts and approaches together.
