For the past four years, Follow That Bird was one of the most buzzed about bands from their hometown of Austin, Texas. And considering how many bands are packed into that one city, that ain't faint praise. They were picked by Matador Records to be the lead single on the 2010 Austin-only compilation Casual Victim Pile, and snapped up enough accolades to have Bill Callahan have them support him on tour and ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead ask them to be the opening act on their full tour of the Western US last summer.

After that...everything went a little awry. The band's label folded, taking with it the money promised them to record their debut full-length. But instead of seeing that as a major roadblock, the trio saw it as the perfect chance to forge their own path. With it came a new band name - Mirror Travel - and a chance to further strengthen their belief in the power of the music they were creating together. Or as Tiffanie Lanmon put it, "We had to walk into the desert and do things our way."

The desert Lanmon (drums) is referring to is the one that surrounds Marfa, Texas, where the she, Paul Brinkley (bass/vocals) and Lauren Green (guitar/vocals) decamped for two weeks to record with Gory Smelley (YACHT, Eleanor Friedberger, Grouper) at Marfa Recording Studio. It was just the isolating experience the band needed to bring their album Mexico into the world.

The results? One of the most warmly engaging records you're likely to hear this year. With Smelley's help, Mirror Travel were able to more fully embrace the dreamy garage pop sound that got them to where they are today.

Opener "Sands" may give the impression of a band lost in a shoegazer wilderness, but let the punchy Nuggets-style bassline and reverb-slathered drive of the next track "I Want You To Know" shove aside all those preconceptions. The rest of Mexico flows by with the same steady gaze and attack, with occasional upticks and dips in tempo and temperature.

Looked at as a complete package, Mexico is a document of a trio who, as their name change would suggest, are taking themselves more seriously and looking at the road ahead with much more purpose and intent. Like the long drives between tour stops and the seemingly endless desert that helped inspire these songs, you're meant to drink this album in slowly, steadily, and with your eye fixed on the horizon.

Soft Swells. Sure it’s a band name (in fact, it’s this band’s name), but it is also a surfing term. Tiny, easy to ride waves that beginners keep an eye out for to build their aquatic confidence up. But what happens when you outgrow those small waves? Do you stop surfing? Or do you step up and try to tackle the biggest waves the ocean has to offer? Tim Williams, the mastermind behind Soft Swells (the band) has been moving towards this moment for years now. Tim started Soft Swells in an effort to reach new heights, and over the course of a full length and an EP, the music has gotten more sophisticated, and the sound of the band has gotten bigger. So if the band’s previous work could be described as soft swells, than their new album Floodlights is like an enormous tidal wave from an action movie. Absolutely everything about the band has gotten bigger. Where once there was just Tim with the help of producer/keyboardist Dave Lynch and a lot of studio magic, there is now a fully formed band. 

In a (successful) experiment to capture the fun and excitement of their live shows on record, Tim brought a motley group of wildly talented musicians together in the studio to lay down all the tracks.  Most of the record was tracked by producer Dave Lynch (the other Dave Lynch) at EchoPlex in Eastbourne UK, with Soft Swells’ touring bass player and multi-instrumentalist Christopher Pappas at Tim’s side, and a guest appearance by resident UK drummer Phil Wilkinson (Jake Bugg, Brian Eno).  As if that wasn’t enough, Misty Boyce (Sara Bareilles), Jonathan Visger (Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr) and Soft Swells’ touring guitarrist Kyle Frederickson all contributed their talents via satellite. This impressive roster of personnel leaves Soft Swells sounding invigorated, like a whole new band. A big, stadium sized band to be exact. Drums shake, organs swell, guitars rock and vocals soar. This is no longer a band trying to figure out how to replicate the sound of their albums on stage, because they brought the stage to the studio. With Modern Outsider Records driving the release, the future of Floodlights looks long and bright.  But Tim’s new air of confidence isn’t just due to the stellar lineup, but also because of his recent marriage to the love of his life, Sabrina, who is a constant encouragement to Tim to take chances, and to do what she knows he is capable of.

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth has said “once the music leaves your head it’s already compromised.” That’s fine if you feel like music is an entirely personal endeavor for the artist. Tim certainly doesn’t feel that way. “I don’t think a song or recording is completed until it hits someone’s ears… The experience is only complete when a listener gives their input – a smile, a foot tapping, a head nodding or whatever reaction a person has.”

The Crookes have premiered a new remix of the song "Echolalia" by the venerable music group Low today via The Onion's AV Club.

 "It's a great tune," said Alan Sparhawk of Low, "we figured we had to go somewhere completely different to do it justice." "Echolalia" is featured on The Crookes sophomore North American full-length, Soapbox, released in April on Modern Outsider. The Sheffield lads are currently in the midst of their third visit to the U.S. of 2014, arriving in Texas this weekend, before wrapping in New York next week at the annual CMJ Music Marathon. The Crookes perform Tuesday, October 21 at Rough Trade for the "Music is GREAT/Ben Sherman" showcase (11pm) and hit Fontana's, Wednesday, October 22 in the afternoon, at the Pirate Radio CMJ party (2:45pm).
 
Soapbox is the sophomore North American release, third overall, for The Crookes. Recorded in a church in the northern Italian alps, the remote isolation brought together this band of outsiders even closer, as they laid out their plan of attack. "The most obvious theme that runs through the entire album is the idea of 'The Outsider'," frets guitarist and lyricist Daniel. "As a band that seems to suit us... never invited inside, but never wanting to be. I can empathize more with the madman standing on his soapbox, slowly gaining an audience by speaking with passion and honesty."

Being an undiscovered commodity has its advantages. Growth, movement, exploration, metamorphosis and misfires can be weathered without scrutiny or expectation. There’s no mistaking that Brass Bed is not a young band. Now in their early 30s, the band’s essential trio of Jonny Campos, Peter DeHart and Christiaan Mader are too old to be wunderkinds, too young to be cult, but just old enough to understand themselves.

With their 4th LP, In The Yellow Leaf, BB continues to contemplate the slipping horizon. Where others confront mortality with a self-seriousness that belies a fundamental insecurity, principal lyricists Mader and Campos encounter the void with winks and shrugs.

That’s the most impressive hidden growth of all – the development of a poetic sensibility appropriate to their stage of life. At one time collegiate Wilco-acolytes, cribbing Jeff Tweedy’s romantic nihilism and Jim O’Rourke’s texturizations like teenagers raiding a liquor cabinet, BB now wears a mask commiserate with their age.

They’ve grown up. They’ve learned about shit. They can talk about it honestly now.

Yellow Leaf finds the band in much the same headspace as their 2013 breakout The Secret Will Keep You: angsty vortices of sound draped over pop idioms constructed with a grad student’s eye for abstraction and musical grammar. With the help of guitarist Ben Jones (Generationals, Youth Lagoon) and a pilot recording with engineer Chris Woodhouse (Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees), the band rediscovered the exuberance of guitar rock and forced it to grow up.

Faced with an audience not yet listening, BB turned up. Where other bands age into balladry, BB traded their ill-fitted pining in for decibel urgency and caterwauling feedback. Their musings sit much better over fuzz, spit, and glistening reverb.

The result is a record that is as eclectically inventive as it is fundamentally raw and abrupt. Lead single “I Am Just A Whisper” captures the band’s ability to charm snakes of anxiety while creating enough speed to allow melody, decay and sustain to hover over the scurrying madness like whispers. Thematic center-piece “Yellow Bursts of Age” evokes a haunting innocence arranged with studio-ghosts that vanish like falling evening snow. From all this it may seem as though BB is trapped in a cycle of morbid meditation. But consider the apostate sarcasm of “Maiden Voyage” and witness that Yellow Leaf is a cradle for artists at peace in an unsettled universe.

Brass Bed used to be wide-eyed pop dreamers. Now they are realists finding wonder in the dark comedy of mortality. They are the eponymous bursts of age – kids hopping into leaf mounds and making the most out decay.

The project quickly landed the band a 7” release (Wooden Bones) on Seattle’s Mt. Fuji Records and US tour dates alongside acts such as Bill Callahan, Ringo Deathstarr, and …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead with new bass player and vocalist Paul Brinkley in tow.

Mirror Travel returned from the road with new material and set their sites on the small desert town of Marfa, TX to record their first full-length album, Mexico. Working with engineer Gory Smelley at his Marfa Recording Company, the trio spent two weeks crafting one of the year’s most solid releases, a half hour of echo-drenched fuzz Esquire Magazine described as “Neil Young playing live from the bottom of a well”.  Mexico is loose, grungy garage at its finest and travels at such an unhurried and hypnotic pace that you may feel you've driven across the desert yourself.

Mirror Travel’s upcoming release, Cruise Deal, takes the same smoldering psych-rock of Mexico and submerges it in a sea of dense and dreamy post-punk sludge. Recorded in the band’s Austin, TX storage-unit-turned-rehearsal-studio with friend and live-sound engineer Roy Taylor (Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin), Cruise Deal is brazenly live and best listened to on the loudest speakers you own. Beyond the intensity of Cruise Deal’s sheer volume lies a frank examination of life in the in-between - the album was born as the band counted last days in their native state. The album speaks to a certain sort of coming and going; by the time Cruise Deal was mixed and mastered, Mirror Travel was spread across three time zones with Lauren in New Mexico, Paul in Philadelphia, and Tiffanie poised to leave Austin. Tiffanie (drums) soon said goodbye to Texas and set off with newest member Meredith Stoner (bass) to rejoin Lauren (guitar, vocals) in Northern New Mexico; the trio is currently writing new music and will tour upon Cruise Deal’s release on 3/11/16.

On their new album, From the Forest Came the Fire, set for an April 2016 release via Modern Outsider, Dana Falconberry & Medicine Bow invite the listener to look upon the world through new eyes, to ponder the intuition that drives a cormorant to dive deeper and deeper. From the Forest Came the Fire guides us past the forest's edge, beneath the surface of the water, and up the base of the mountain, leaving listeners awestruck at the meeting of natural landscapes and the supernatural forces that lay within them.

Intricately layered and multi-textured, Falconberry’s avant-folk songs are the aural equivalent of the disparate and wondrous landscapes of these United States. Trace the back roads branching out from Dearborn, Michigan and the Leelanau Peninsula across the country to Austin, Texas to understand Falconberry’s personal and musical history. An adept lyricist, Falconberry has always captured the stunning imagery of her surrounding physical geography, evident on her last album, Leelanau, which depicted memories from her young life in Michigan. The songs garnered praise from The New York Times, NPR, and SPIN and helped secure appearances at Austin City Limits Festival and Fun Fun Fun Fest and opening gigs for Califone, Daniel Johnston, and Heartless Bastards.

Where before Falconberry evoked the beauty of the natural world, she seeks now to understand its mystery, delving into the anthropological magic of places, nostalgically channeling the voices of past lives. Inspired by her late grandmother Isabelle, the album unfolds like a surreal dream quest. Falconberry chases ghosts through a thicket of trees, over rocky ridges, across the vast expanse of a thirsty desert, mapping out an intangible terrain like a spiritual cartographer. Written in a series of solitary retreats into remote areas of the Ozarks, Lincoln National Forest, the Buffalo River, and White Sands, New Mexico, these songs chronicle an introspective, metaphysical journey set to a backdrop of the American continent.

Anchored in solid rhythms and buoyed by ethereal instrumentation, the songs are excellently produced; musical motifs flower brilliantly before receding into shadowy strings and arrangements feel simultaneously lush and spacious. Much of the album was produced and engineered by Spoon’s Jim Eno at his Public Hi-Fi studio in Austin, TX, and the remainder was recorded by Christopher Cox and Grant Johnson of Fat Fuse Music. Both producers possess a clear grasp Falconberry’s sonic palette and help capture the songwriter’s most arresting work to date.

Drawing from her early experiences with classical music through her work as a ballet dancer, Falconberry couples traditional notions with influences from Austin’s diverse independent music community to create intricate, modern folk songs with an experimental edge. Backed by Christopher Cox (bass), Gina Dvorak (banjo, guitar), Karla Manzur (keys), Matthew Shepherd (percussion), and Lindsey Verrill (cello), Falconberry continues to work with the same cast of musicians she assembled prior to Leelanau. After four years of collaboration, the band has developed a close friendship that transfers to all aspects of their sound. Fusing bedroom soul with the ambient expanses of shoegaze, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Curtis Roush explores love and loss away from the purview of his psych-rock comrades The Bright Light Social Hour. Roush was born in Austin, Texas. Suffused with the 70s album rock of his Californian parents, Roush picked up his first instrument, an acoustic guitar, at age 13 in a vain attempt to win back the affections of his 8th grade girlfriend. After his first romantic defeat, Roush buried himself in instruments and musical genres shifting from the metal and classic rock of his teenage years, the hardcore and post-rock of his college years, and into the expansive psychedelia as a member of The Bright Light Social Hour.

Coming off years of heavy touring and relationship upheaval, Curtis Roush composed the songs of his debut album, “Cosmic Campfire Music,” on a laptop during fleeting moments in motels, a tour van, and his parents’ spare bedroom. A reflection of these hushed, quieter spaces, these songs conjure an existential meditation on love - how it rarely arrives, how it often leaves. Working with producer Erik Wofford at Cacophony Recorders, Roush tracked the album to analog tape over one month in the winter of 2016. He played every instrument.

The second track “Getaway” releases an early blast of propulsive energy from its Motown churn and crackling guitar. Album centerpiece “Polestar” nestles its country-tinged yearning in stately slide guitar and languid synths. On “Never Leave You Cold,” Roush ponders devotion over a breezy motorik rhythm before exploding into an immersive hymn of professed love. The album closes with the interstellar gospel of “Space is Empty (Come With Me)” - a seven minute epic reflecting on defeat and rebirth following the disastrous 2016 election. From its calm confessions to its skyward gaze, “Cosmic Campfire Music” is a listen for hushed respite before the long struggle ahead.

Mirror Travel - "I Want You To Know"

For the past four years, Follow That Bird was one of the most buzzed about bands from their hometown of Austin, Texas. And considering how many bands are packed into that one city, that ain't faint praise. They were picked by Matador Records to be the lead single on the 2010 Austin-only compilation Casual Victim Pile, and snapped up enough accolades to have Bill Callahan have them support him on tour and ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead ask them to be the opening act on their full tour of the Western US last summer.

After that...everything went a little awry. The band's label folded, taking with it the money promised them to record their debut full-length. But instead of seeing that as a major roadblock, the trio saw it as the perfect chance to forge their own path. With it came a new band name - Mirror Travel - and a chance to further strengthen their belief in the power of the music they were creating together. Or as Tiffanie Lanmon put it, "We had to walk into the desert and do things our way."

The desert Lanmon (drums) is referring to is the one that surrounds Marfa, Texas, where the she, Paul Brinkley (bass/vocals) and Lauren Green (guitar/vocals) decamped for two weeks to record with Gory Smelley (YACHT, Eleanor Friedberger, Grouper) at Marfa Recording Studio. It was just the isolating experience the band needed to bring their album Mexico into the world.

The results? One of the most warmly engaging records you're likely to hear this year. With Smelley's help, Mirror Travel were able to more fully embrace the dreamy garage pop sound that got them to where they are today.

Opener "Sands" may give the impression of a band lost in a shoegazer wilderness, but let the punchy Nuggets-style bassline and reverb-slathered drive of the next track "I Want You To Know" shove aside all those preconceptions. The rest of Mexico flows by with the same steady gaze and attack, with occasional upticks and dips in tempo and temperature.

Looked at as a complete package, Mexico is a document of a trio who, as their name change would suggest, are taking themselves more seriously and looking at the road ahead with much more purpose and intent. Like the long drives between tour stops and the seemingly endless desert that helped inspire these songs, you're meant to drink this album in slowly, steadily, and with your eye fixed on the horizon.
