Turbo Recordings takes new-school electro to grad school with the latest release from Finnish duo Renaissance Man.

Finland's Renaissance Man have earned a reputation as some of the smartest minds in dance music, and by extension, the world. Following their brilliant 2011Turbo debut LP, the former architects continue to bring high-minded concepts to low-ended club tracks with their latest release, "Call2Call."

The six tracks on this EP take the DNA of classic electro and splice it with techno's focus on structure and the duo's trademark "Critical House" conceptual ingenuity. The use of landline phone samples over dirty 808 beats evokes something both timeless and incredibly time-specific, like a primitive ape-man (or woman) being handed the first-ever cordless phone and hearing his first dial tone as the equivalent of being left to die in space. The result is something familiar yet new, much like the second time you ever read the phrase "familiar yet new."

None of which is to say that this music doesn't have balls. Because it does. Brainy, well-considered balls. Accept them as our gift to you.

RIPPERTON – “A LITTLE PART OF SHADE”

Swiss producer Ripperton returns to present his new studio album “A Little Part Of Shade” due for release June 2013.

The musician’s second full-length album will further deepen his impressive catalogue of work and follow the 2010 critically acclaimed “Niwa” seeing his return to Joris Voorn and Edwin Oosterwal’s Amsterdam based Green label.

Ripperton gained popularity as a producer with his Lazy Fat People project releasing on high profile labels such as Border Community, Planet E, or Wagon Repair; he rapidly grew as a solo artist with an almost endless run of key releases on Green, Liebe Detail, Connaisseur, Music Man, Systematic, Dessous and remixes for Radiohead (“Nude”), Laurent Garnier (“Controlling The House”), Ellen Allien (“My Tree”), Beanfield (“Tides”), Max Cooper (‘Egomodal’) labeled him as a refined studio producer, adding a newfound sense of introspection to electronic house music.

Since the release of Niwa in 2010, Ripperton has been busy working on this album – combining traditional song craft with a more familiar rhythmical style.

“A Little Part Of Shade is about the part of shade that everyone has. It's about the private garden; it’s quite the opposite of Niwa. It's an inside garden. It can be bright or dark or in the middle. It can destroy or help you…”

If you weren't convinced of Raphaël Ripperton compositional talent by his debut album, his sophomore release will do the trick. The LP see’s him work alongside a variety of artists including Hemlock Smith, the multi talented writer, graphist and photographer Van Hai, and Germain Umdenstock, whom features on the opening lead track “A Little Part Of Shade”; providing guitar melodies over his carefully constructed landscapes.

Drawing on the collaborative talents from his own highly respected independent Perspectiv label Ripperton’s track “Black Wall” features the vocals of Masaya and succeeds in demanding an almost attentive listen.

The thirteen musically broad and emotionally deep tracks that are included in “A Little Part Of Shade reflect Rippertons approach to electronic music production, song writing attitude, and the sense of emotional delivery that extends far beyond the purview of techno clubs.

Jah9 releases her 'Tension'

KINGSTON, JAMAICA - It has been three months since she proclaimed a New Name, an album widely embraced by fans and critics alike. Now the jazz-on-dub artist, Jah9, is releasing a new song, 'Tension.'

The politically-charged track is being presented to her fans on May 23, the third anniversary of what the singer calls the "Tivoli Garden Holocaust." That date will also be her birthday. Recently she recalled her whereabouts on that fateful day in 2010, evoking the scene from her vantage point at Gabre Selassie's Kingston Dub Club. 

"Standing in the hills looking down on T.G., burning," she began. "Sizzla's voice echoed through the big speakers, chanting appropriately for the ghetto youths." With the mood thus set, she described her own emotion. "And I wept bitterly as the current moved through I womb. Watching helplessly in disbelief and despair as the nation turned in on itself..."

Then, after a solemn pause, she punctuated her statement, "...on I earthstrong."

These contributing factors inspired the message and delivery of 'Tension,' as Jah9 had finished penning the lyrics for the song before the violence quelled days later.

The work is produced in collaboration with I Grade Records and is part of the album, Songbird Riddim - the first installment of a riddim series by the production collective known as Zion I Kings. The album is officially available via digital and physical outlets including iTunes, VP Reggae Distribution and Ernie B's Reggae Distribution.

"I discovered Jah9's music online and was immediately struck by her powerful word sound and unique melodies, particularly on the track 'New Name,'" said Laurent 'Tippy I' Alfred, producer, founder and CEO for I Grade Records. "'Tension' is the most intense song on the Songbird Riddim album, and it captures emotions and energies that you don't often find in music. Hearing about the inspiration behind the song made me appreciate her art even more."

I Grade Records, based in St. Croix, USVI, has released twenty-six albums since its founding in 2001, including nine albums with the groundbreaking deep roots band, Midnite, as well as several notable debut albums by artists such as Dezarie and Niyorah.
