We're absolutely stoked to present Modūl Mix 004, which comes to us from the man Re:Son.  A true veteran of turntablism, wrapped into a long time love affair with hip-hop and drum and bass, Grath's style is that of true a craftsman.  Welcome to the mix Re:Son.

This is Garth- aka Re:Son

I grew up in a musical family and I started playing drums when i was about 6. My parents got me a little toy drum set for Christmas. I loved it. I wore it out. Because my parents both played in a band, there was access to a real drum set, so I started practicing pretty regularly.

As a kid in the 80s, hip hop was everywhere. A lot of the songs were sample-based, so it was real drums in the breaks. I practiced playing drums a lot by playing along to the songs with drum breaks. I had Mahogany down cold. Drum sounds in general always caught my attention. 

I started college in 1993 and clubs were starting to book more DJs and electronic acts. Seeing a DJ spin records was another immediate hook, like drums. There was also so much new music coming out, and, again, the songs with breaks were the stand outs. Faster breakbeat and then chopped-up amen breaks. More. 

And bass. Low bass. Punchy bass. Weird wobbly bass. Loud, disgruntled bass.

I had a roommate the summer of ’96 and he had turntables. I got on one day and was in immediately. Drumming really helped timing and counting measures. 

I started buying records that summer and got my own pair of 1200s not too long after. We had a solid record shop in Tallahassee (Vinyl Fever), and the guys ordering records were DJs, too, so there were some great records coming around. I played consistently in Tallahassee, FL and regionally for a while as EKO21.

I finished up school and moved to Jacksonville in '99. Me and future wife didn’t really go out a lot for a while, but I do remember seeing Roni Size and the full Represent band at Plush around 2000. Really dope show. Ask Jeff about it sometime. He was there. He seent it!

I kept buying records. Kept practicing. Started seeing the march of time moving away from vinyl, but with options. Started using Re:Son- my middle name is Reese- It’s Reese, son.

So, now I’m the old dude at the club. Fuck. But I still like spinning. And technology has made everything 1000% more dope and fun.

DnB music also seems to be going through a really dope time, too. It’s funny to see people talk about it as next big thing about to blow up.

It’s really the end result of everything.

It’s a beautiful melody that plane-crashes into the side of a mountain. It’s meticulous precision coupled with drippy soul.

The sparse. The thick. Relentless and effervescent. Absolute disgust with a spritz of lemon. Beauty. I love beats and bass. I love DnB!
