EPM Podcast 141 comes from UK producer, Blueprint label runner and DJ James Ruskin. A bastion for British Techno, Blueprint Records was originally founded in 1996 by James and the late Richard Polson and since then has continued to be at the forefront of cutting-edge labels. Entering its 25th year with a series of 3 12” EPs we are also delighted to have James involved with our own 20th celebrations this year with his track ‘There Was A Time’ as showcased in this new mix. Taking a more restrained and experimental techno path this set sees Ruskin bring the likes of VC-118A, Surgeon, Mal Hombre, Bambounou, Kerrie, Planetary Assault Systems (PAS), Shifted, Vril, Anodyne and more into the frame. 

Consistently releasing quality material through Blueprint since the label's mid-'90s foundation, Ruskin has also issued several full-lengths and EPs through German institution Tresor, including 2001's ‘Into Submission’ and 2008’s ‘The Dash’. In addition to releasing collaborations with Surgeon and Oliver Ho, Ruskin has also worked with Regis (Karl O'Connor) as O/V/R, and produced more experimental, IDM-leaning material with Mark Broom as the Fear Ratio with several albums featuring on Manchester’s iconic Skam label as well as the duo’s new Deadhand moniker which recently saw an EP released on Seagrave feat. DJ Prime Cuts and rapper Sensational. As a series of EP releases drops as part of the label’s 25 year celebrations and with several album projects in the pipeline, 2021 sees James firmly back in the production hot seat. The 25th mix comes from Ron Albrecht, German Dj who began his musical career in the early nineties. Inspired by local and international scene experts like Tanith, Rok, Kid Paul and Jeff Mills, it was time to come out into the open for the first time in 1993. His trips to famous and well-respected clubs made him switch from being a regular music consumer to discovering the field of performing and DJ-ing.  His name is closely connected to the Gerberei club in Schwerin, which the co-founder, organiser and resident ran from 1994 until its closing in 2013. Between 1997 and 2002 Ron Albrecht additionally worked as a producer together with his associate Thomas Kuffner, releasing several records under the labels “Sind Records” and “ElektronikParlament”. Brothers in Mind, a DJ and producer collaboration, is another one of Ron Albrechts projects which he puts into practice together with his longtime friend Stefan Rein.

His picks for Bassiani Podcast series are what you might expect: an energetic, dynamic and hypnotic techno. The set, that begins with a brand new release of Rehue, which soon followed by some techno heavyweights, deepens the vibe across a long run of energetic, dancefloor oriented tunes, and goes out in a field of atmospheric, repetitive and meditative records.

The name “Modular Expansion” is inspired from the first analog modular synthesizers of which different parts were connected between each-other, forming an expansion.Modular Expansion is a cultural body of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and has to its credit actions with the auspices and financial support of the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Athens. Actions such as vinyl releases, art videos and publishing events. He is also a European Design Award holder, Silver Award in 2016 in the category Music & Films Covers. Modular Expansion have events in a lot of European cities and famous places like Berghain, Tresor, Suicide, Sisyphos, Renate, Birgit in Berlin, also in cities like London, Rome, Barcelona, Sofia, Warsaw, Moscow, Tel Aviv and at the most prestigious places in Athens.

Modular Expansion is one of the first teams which started organizing Techno events in Athens in 1998. In the end of the 90s began to host artists from the labels such as Tresor, Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, presenting the Berlin underground music vibe and making techno popular in the Greek capital. Founder of Modular Expansion known as George Apergis performs already in 2002 at the legendary Tresor in Berlin.
