Disquiet Junto Project 0184: Sets of Bars

Disquiet Works

I tried to incorporate a lot of different interpretations of the phrase "Old Time Electronica." I started off with a click from one of those old metronomes you used to see on top of pianos (get it? "old time"). Then sampled a classic ragtime piano line from Scott Joplin (my association with "old time" is turn of the century stuff like this) that was the foundation of the piece, the drums were vintage casio, there was a nice sample of a Ondes Martenot (the oldest electronic instrument I believe), I even sampled some banjo from the movie Deliverance (again, just an "old timey" reference for me) as well as wrote my own Devo-esque synth line to the whole thing.

old timelectrO (Disquiet0137-OldTimeElectro)

This weeks disquiet assignment was to create a piece of music inspired by the haiku:

"There’s a lifetime in
between the first and second
clicks of the door’s lock"

I started with the idea that I would treat each line of the haiku as different parts of the song that reflected that particular line. I started with the last line/part of the song ("clicks of the door’s lock") and made a little beat out of bits of a field recording I made of me opening and closing my bathroom door. Although you don't hear it until 2/3 through the song, that beat became the basis for all the synth riffs/piano etc.

The haiku made me think of all the little things that aren't so insignificant if you really focus on them. I imagined the first part of the song as a bunch of little sounds in rapid succession. I conveniently had a lot of random sounds from an unfinished piece I was going to call "50 Sounds" in which short, ever changing samples, everything from a power drill to a laugh track, were played somewhat rhythmically to a piece of music. I decided to combine the two ideas since I had all those samples ready, just had to adapt it to this new piece...

A Lifetime In Sound (disquiet0145-Theresalifetimein)

Repeating bars with the sequencers I have in my modular eluded me for this junto, so I instead opted to play this by hand using my Pressure Points. I decided to use a rapid 4/4 to define my bars and played a simple 13 bar (1 + 8 + 4 = 13) ascending and descending scale through the first 13 harmonics. I had my E340 set to drone the root harmonic throughout and slowly opened the E440 filter on the way up, and closed it on the way down. I inverted the logic signal with a channel of Maths to close the Dr. Octature Filter wrapped around the E350 on the way up, and to open back up on the way down the scale. The gate created by each press on a Pressure Points pad was fed into the E102 Shift Register to delay the moving pitch's CV by a small amount. This led to the slight pulse in the piece. I ran the clock from the E102 into the Dual Delay which further spread the note hits out a bit more in space. The entire composition seems longer than 13 bars, but the harmonic movement stops at bar 13 and simply fades out naturally.

Doralice Waves (disquiet0184-setsofbars)

3 different length bars of a bass drum pattern and spoken word snippet. Ordered using a random number generator. Randomly generated trap pattern slowed at the start of every bar. Degree of speed change determined as an ode to DJ Screw.

I've been wanting to play around with this style for a while now, so this seemed like a great time.

This is weird: i recorded some parts in live 8 on acidrack through podfarm then exported as wav to more easily play around with in audacity.. but what was outputted was not what i recorded and then live just crashed so i lost everything.. i dunno what happened, dunno where the 1-bar went, or where all the echo came from.. but hey the segments are combined at random and i like how it's come out!

This week’s Junto is project 184 in the series. We’ll explore the relationship between segments that consist of 1 bar, 8 bars, and 4 bars.

Step 1: Record three very short pieces of music: one that is 8 bars long, one that is 4 bars long, and one that is 1 bar long.

Step 2: Create an extended sequence of those segments that combines them at random. The overall total length is recommended to be between one and two minutes.

Step 3: You have a pair of options here:

Option A: Add one or two additional layers of sound/music that play off the sequence.

Option B: Develop your own rules/system (example: start an 8-bar tone each time the 1-bar segment plays).

I recorded a 1 bar drum loop, a 4 bar synth line and an eight bar chord progression.I programmed a numerology sampler patch to divide each loop into sixteen equal sections (1/16, 1/4bar, 1/2 bar) and set the segments to trigger with a random possibility that the sampler would be muted. The result was mixed down and then I played the original loops back with the octave, the beat divisions changed and the start point of the acidy line modulated.

This week’s Junto is project 184 in the series. We’ll explore the relationship between segments that consist of 1 bar, 8 bars, and 4 bars.

Uncertain Ratio (disquiet0184-setsofbars)

I randomly plotted some notes in C for a one bar loop within Ableton...
and then used MIDIMadness plugin to randomly generate two other segments of 4 and 8 bars
after tweaking the voices and layering effects I mixed each segment down to audio and also created one track of silence.
I then created three audio channels that each would randomly play any of the above parts (each channel playing through a separate but interlinking chain of effects and at a rate of 1/1,1/4, or 1/8), with legato applied and then just let the sequencer take control of the arrangement

Untitled - Disquiet0184 - Setsofbars

My girlfriend was practicing some Chopin sheet music when I switched the synth setting to something wacky.  It sounded terrible to her but awesome to me.  I looped a little piece of it, fed it through a bunch of effects, and made a beat with some beat-repeat and other effects going and that became my 1 bar segment.

The 4 bar segment is the bassline with each bar having a different effect applied to it (first clean, second wah, third redux, and the last is just chopped up). The 8 bar segment is the synth lead.  I though of a random process for combining them in an arrangement.  First i figured that there were 4 combinations and 3 solos possible: abc, ab, ac, bc, a, b, c.  So, I chose a number 1-7 with Random.org and strung together about 2 minutes worth of results from that.  I kept what worked from the experiment and played with the parts that didn't work so well.

I sampled my fridge, then with a spectrum analyzer figured out which freqs were more prevalent in the hum. Figured out a few semitones roughly between a B and a C note and a little bit between E and F were most common in the hum.  So, all the music is basically in that little 4 note scale.  I automated the volume on the master track to do kind of an oscillating volume thing, sort of like a motor.  The floor tom beat kind of mirrors that rhythm too.

There's so many ways this painting can be interpreted musically, but I chose to treat each line as a different instrument loop, and then built a little composition out of the loops.  Each symbol in a line represents a note I assigned arbitrarily, or in a few cases, it represents silence.  The symbols only have consistency within a line.  A dash in one line doesn't mean the same thing as a dash on another line for example.

I also kind of combined this project with another idea I had of putting a tambourine on my tongue drum to vibrate it as I play.  I used an 8 bit midi sound for a unnatural/natural contrast and I stole the funky rhythm from this man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhQjpcKvTnw
