FROM THE ARCHIVES - 2018 

Raised on the East Coast dance music tradition in the 90s, Jenifa Mayanja is seen as one of the first ladies of deep house. She got her first break as a buyer for Joe Clausell's now-defunct Dance Tracks Records - where she also worked behind the counter with one Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy - and went onto play at Body & Soul (Claussell's party with Francois K and Danny Krivit), helping establish a 25+ year DJ career. Ugandan-born, her African roots remain integral to her musical outlook and, now based in Berlin, continues to be a spokesperson, role model and educator for a new generation. Not just passing on the lessons learned from Claussell, but the experiences gained through running and self-distributing Bu-mako Recordings, Sound Warriors and EDJ Records, co-run with husband Jus-Ed.

Deep and hypnotic techno artist Kontinum steps up for this week's Global Vibe Radio episode.

Initially inspired by the subcultural scene of his hometown of Lübeck, the young artist was strongly influenced by the predominant sound of the Leipzig techno scene. Especially the infamous Institut fuer Zukunft and its hypnotic and dissociative sound significantly formed his distinctive style and quickly paved his way into the local scene.

In 2017 Kontinum co-founded the project @nebulakollektiv and, after organising their first raves, the collective quickly found its way into Leipzig's club scene and managed to establish its own event series at Institut fuer Zukunft.

In addition to managing most of Nebula's musical affairs, Kontinum continues to steadily enhance his own remarkable sound which can already be listened to on his releases on labels such as Circular Limited, Lowless and Agos.

When it comes down to combining the best of many musical worlds, Peter Van Hoesen can say he's been doing it for a while now. Deeply rooted in the Brussels electronic music scene as DJ and producer since 1993, he's considered by many as a man with multiple musical talents: from straight-up dancefloor jackin' techno to advanced abstract electronica. His music has been released on his own labels Time To Express and Foton as well as through Exone, Komisch, Lan Muzic, Curle, Meakusma and Morse. He's active as a DJ, producer, sound designer and composer for contemporary dance and theatre. Peter currently lives in Berlin.

Berlin-based DJ duo and couple Brax Moody (Munich) and Vamparela (Thessaloniki) have been collaborating together since 2007, either as a DJ duo, in bands, or as remixers and music producers. Merging the rhythm and dynamism of Munich’s hip-hop clubs with the grime and attitude of Thessaloniki’s back-alley indie bars gives an idea of how to categorize Local Suicide: a straight-up soulful fusion of new wave, slow techno, acid house, chug or as they like to call it “technodisco”.

As DJs they’ve played all over Europe, Asia, North Africa, South America and the US with gigs at Off Sonar, Melt!, Amsterdam Dance Event, Berlin Festival and regular DJ slots at Salon zur Wilden Renate, Berghain, Watergate, Ritter Butzke and almost every club the German capital has to offer.

Donato has been DJing in the 1980s, discovering techno and acid, before crafting his own take on dark, hypnotic electronic music. Although he is currently based out of Rome, Donato’s creativity depends on natural surroundings — whether that’s his beach house in San Felice or playing in the mountains at @mindgameslaby Festival in Japan. Donato and I sat down together to talk about nature and sound, a conversation that first started two years ago at @Terraforma Festival, and picked up this summer in Rome.

─ミックスの録音環境を教えてください。
 
Abletonで録りました。でもミックスに使ったほとんどのトラックはヴァイナルから取り込んだものです。今でも多くのヴァイナルを買っているので。
 
 
ーこのミックスはどこでレコーディングしたものですか？
 
ブリュッセルにある僕のスタジオで、ある天気のいい木曜日の午後に録りました。選曲は新旧織り交ぜてあって、僕がリミックスした未発表のJames Kumoの曲も含まれています。
 

─このミックスのコンセプト、アイデアなどを教えてください。
 
アイディアは古い曲と新しい曲をうまく組み合わせること。既に触れたように未発表の曲も入っています。古い曲でいうと、最近僕のDJセットでよく使っているSleazy Dの「I Lost Control」。僕が思うに、シカゴのアシッド・トラックの中でも最も素晴らしい曲の一つ。僕は古い曲と新しい曲の組み合わせを考えるのがとても好きで、そうした方がミックスにも深みが出ると思う。
 
 
—近況と最近の活動について教えてください。
 
先週から作業を始めたのが、コンテンポラリー・ダンス・パフォーマンスのためのエレクトロニック・コンポジション（作曲）とサウンド・デザイン。今はそれと、週末のギグをこなすことにほとのどの時間を費やしている。それと、先日発売した僕のアルバム『Entropic City』に関する仕事もあるね、アルバム・ツアーの準備とプロモーションもある。
 
 
─今後の活動予定を教えてください。
 
もっとたくさんのギグとたくさんの音楽制作。５月にはまた日本に行けるから嬉しいよ。３つのギグをやることになっていて、どれもすごく楽しみにしてる。アルバム・ツアーが終わったら、夏前に〈Time To Express〉からの新しいリリースを予定しているよ。だから、当分の間は忙しくなりそうだ。

Modyfier is an Artist’s platform: it’s an idea acting as energy, it’s an experiment in accrual (as a collection), it’s an attitude that rides creativity and freedom. The Process Series relies on referral as people who participate each suggest someone else, creating its form, shifting in directions I would not be able to steer alone. Matthew Barney once said this about his early ‘Drawing Restraint’ work that really struck me: “I was thinking about how the body functions in training – how the muscle breaks down under resistance and then heals larger and stronger. I was trying to use that process of resistance to create form.”
