When it comes to his productions, He has his own characteristic deep sound : deep rhythms and atmospheric elements have always played a major role in his music. The mood is often sinister, the pace set viscously slow. But whether it's deep and dubby, driving or gurgling with acid abstractions, the music's strong magnetism never ceases to impress.

"This mix is an introduction to my musical universe, sat somewhere between the 4th world, outer space and the remotest parts of the rainforest.

I don’t often put mixes together and this is my first for over 2 years. 

I was very happy to include songs from legendary musicians who’ve inspired me - Steve Reich, John Hassell, Tony Allen, Jeff Mills, Larry heard, Michael Jackson, Four Tet, Ritchie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Alice Coltrane - and present their music in a way you’ve maybe not heard before. I am also happy to present some of my recent hero producers that feature regularly on my Radio Highlife WWFM show - Golden Teacher, DJ Sotofett, Bambounou, Harmonious Thelonious, LAPS, Duckett, Raoul K, Tomaga, Al Dobson Jr in particular. Finally, I had fun delving into my 20 years of collecting vinyl records to find some songs you might not have heard before, or have not heard for a while. 

This mix is meant to give you space to detach yourself, to give you peace, to heal - much needed in today’s climate!

stephen quirke - process part 347 (quirky)

Belgian disco savants Rheinzand return with the second in a triptych of remix EPs. This one follows Obey Remixes, which came out Nov 6.

Kills & Kisses, the original track, comes off Rheinzand’s 2019 self-titled album and has been out as a single as well. The track was one of the more propulsive on the album with an almost micro-house sounding groove, driving down low, blossoming up top.

This bundle of remixes flow from that vein, expanding on the house angle of Rheinzand’s sound through the work of three fantastic artists.

Sicilian Musumeci aka Mauro di Martino tidies up the track and grooms that sweet, dreamy essence of the original into a timeless dance tune.

The Tel Aviv duo Red Axes’ deliver a more visceral take, stoking the bodily fires with deep, punchy bass and sharp staccato.

And last but not least, English-Japanese group Skylab deconstruct and almost perversely (in a good way) re-intensify the source material on a mesmeric trip to the chthonic planes of dance music.

The track also features as a special dub mix and instrumental version.

Modyfier is an Artist’s platform: it’s an idea acting as energy, it’s an experiment in accrual (as a collection), it’s an attitude that rides creativity and freedom. The Process Series relies on referral as people who participate each suggest someone else, creating its form, shifting in directions I would not be able to steer alone. Matthew Barney once said this about his early ‘Drawing Restraint’ work that really struck me: “I was thinking about how the body functions in training – how the muscle breaks down under resistance and then heals larger and stronger. I was trying to use that process of resistance to create form.”
