Black Merlin, or George Thompson to his Mum, first came to our attention with his outstanding Brunswick Drive 12" on Commander Weatherall's Bird Scarer label last year. Since then, we've kept a keen eye on his movements and his unique form of 80's inspired, cinematic and analogue heavy aesthetic has earned him further releases on the excellent World Unknown imprint and Mike Simonetti's New Jersey. Look out for an as yet untitled release on London's LN-CC. We are pleased to welcome him into the Clandestino fold.

A fantastic DJ/producer, Cosmo's a part of the fam even though he's yet to release any music on the label. That said, he's got an insanely good track coming soon on Throne of Blood's forthcoming MOON ROCK compilation.

The elusive Man Power drops the latest Influences mixtape for R$N ahead of his appearance at Electric Elephant 2014 this summer... remember the summer? There was a glimmer of hope about it earlier in the month. 

"When I was asked to record an “Influence Mix” I first recorded a mix of less well known music that I felt might have influenced the sound of the music that I make, but I decided to delete it because I realised I was being untruthful, and that my original influences all came from before the music I had chosen.

Instead I’ve recorded this, which contains only music I listened to when I was growing up and forming my musical tastes. The bad news is I messed up and recorded it through the microphone, instead of through the desk lolllllll..

So here's a microphone recording of us playing all night long, complete with screaming, whistling, conversations with the first punters to arrive and discussions about how to fix the smoke machine.

TBF it's not at all bad considering, and it lets you get a real feel for the insane energy in that room last night 😉

Ewan McVicar B2B Man Power. Are Your Affiliated 26.05.25 (Mic recording!) Part 1

Young partygoers might know Man Power, AKA Geoff Kirkwood, as the earnest geezer going back-to-back with DJs like Ewan McVicar, Paul Woolford, La La and Skream—peak-time specialists with a fine line in boofy bangers and ravey techno. Kirkwood is also a dab hand at the kind of elliptical house and deep cut detours favored by '00s labels like DFA and Optimo.

In spite of a long track record as a producer and promoter, if you had to boil Kirkwood's work in recent years down to a single quality, it might be altruism. He hails from North Shields, a small town fringing the boundary of Newcastle in England's oft-neglected North East, and wears his heritage proudly. The Me Me Me label boss's involvement in a flurry of civic restoration, and no-filter paeans to the importance of working class involvement in culture, have become as central to his life as music-making itself. For an accomplished DJ who has played at nearly every good club you could name, that’s no small feat.

So which side of Man Power were we in for? The answer on RA.940 is: both. '60s free verse poetry, Zebra Katz, Gesaffelstein and John Carpenter in the opening stretch? Makes sense. Octave One punching through Rozalla? You got it. An extended Joe Claussell workout atop Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place"? Why not. In Kirkwood's hands, it all goes down as smooth as a pint of Newcastle Brown.

"I wanted to make this mix feel special and different to my other mixes I've done in the last 12 months. I decided I'd try to make it as representative as possible of how I've been playing recently, so to do that I've picked a bunch of tracks exclusively from the music my USB tells me that I played at a gig at Panorama Bar a few weeks ago. The latest in our mix series comes from Edinburgh's Cheap Picasso; the DJ's whose 'Gasoline Dance Machine' monthly has gathered the Disco great and good to Cab Vol for the best part of 12 months now.

Celebrating all that is strange and euphoric about disco in equal measure, the duo's infectious love for those big synth numbers that put a smile on your face has certainly rubbed off on us.

We continue 25 years of Solid Steel with a mix from Photek, a legendary figure in music since the early nineties who featured many times on the show with tracks from Modus Operadi, Form & Function up to Pyramid from his recent album Ku:Palm, plus 'Into the 90's' from 1994 that also featured on Coldcut's Journeys by DJ mix CD. This week we welcome West Norwood Cassette Library aka Bob Bhamra, a self confessed Coldcut fan who told us that he once warmed up for Jon More at Club 333 back in 2000. Again he's up first and after a nod to our birthday celebrations from KRS 1, it's straight in with Cardopusher, followed closely by the recent Bobby Champs EP on WNCL, Shadow Child and a couple of freshly cut dubplates from J. Tijn and the man himself. Then it's 4 more tracks from his label, plus music from Data 70, another sly nod with Dance tearing up 'Funky Drummer' and closing with the record he finished with in 2000, a certain Coldcut with Doctorin The House Theftapella!
