I've been so excited to share the story behind these two tracks. Please read on..

It all started last year when I noticed an email from The New York Times in my inbox - an invitation from Pulitzer Prize-Winner, Ian Urbina, to join a first-of-its-kind initiative - to combine investigative journalism and music in an effort to raise awareness about current events.

Ian wrote that he believed that musicians are master story-tellers - that he was looking to team up with an artist who could use their musical abilities to convey the emotions behind his reporting. He thought I might be a good fit for the project - to use his writing as emotional fuel, and audio samples from the video footage to tell the story in my own way through music.

So, what's the story?

Get this - right now, there are pirate ships in international waters - on which some of the most disturbing and vile crimes against human rights and the environment are going largely unnoticed and unpunished. Too big to police, and under no clear international authority, the world's oceans have become a lawless hellscape where slavery, sex trafficking, and murder are commonplace.

Needless to say, I was hooked - I spent hours reading Ian's book, feeling sick to my stomach as I went through the video footage. I couldn't believe all of this was happening and there is almost nothing being done to stop it. It just pulled me in - next thing I know, I'm ripping audio samples from the footage and scribbling down ideas, fully committed to doing my part to spread awareness about these atrocities.

What really struck me was finding out about the stowaways. That's right - there are people hiding on these doom-spreading death-vessels by choice. I found myself completely immersed in one particular interview with a stowaway who had lottery tickets hanging from the top of his crawl space. He explained that, for him, sneaking onto the ship was his passage to a better life somewhere new.

Imagine that - life was so unbearable where you lived that you decided to sneak on to one of these notoriously dangerous boats in the hopes you might make it ashore someplace new with better opportunities - but weeks later, you find yourself still hiding in your tiny crawl space with little to eat or drink. You often wake to gunshots or the sounds of men fighting and yelling.

Some of the other stowaways have turned themselves in, only to be forced into slavery on the ship. Others have tried to escape by jumping overboard - only to be used as shooting practice for the guards - or worse, to be left alone to die in a vast and unforgiving sea.

Yet even amidst all of this death and despair, somehow, you still have hope - your lottery ticket hanging above you as a reminder that miracles can still happen.

That's where I wanted to take you with the music for this EP. I wanted to paint a picture of what it would sound and feel like to be hiding onboard one of the most disturbing places on earth. I wanted you to feel the unease hanging in the air around you, hear the groaning of the ship, the waves crashing into metal - and once you're there in the middle of it all - to instill a comforting sense of hope.

I'm really proud of these 2 tracks - I used this as an opportunity to step out of my musical comfort zone and test my own boundaries with new rhythms and sounds. I hope you can hear and feel what I was trying to do with these.

In Dec. 2018, my twin Tommy was found unconscious on the side of the road after a horrific motorcycle accident. As I sat in the intensive care unit that night, I was told that they might not wake up, and I had to contemplate the devastating possibility of losing my other half. This film is a celebration of Tommy’s survival and strength, their queerness and their community who loves and cares deeply for them. 

The clip features Tommy dancing inside Sydney’s Red Rattler Theatre — a space where, growing up, Tommy felt safe and comfortable to be wholeheartedly and completely themselves, a place where they found their family, and their identity. After spending months in a wheelchair with a broken back, ribs and pelvis, nerve damage and brain injury, Tommy can once again move and express themselves freely, an incredible thing to watch as their brother.
