To commemorate two decades of doom and gloom from My Dying Bride, the band embarked upon a special project to re-work familiar melodies and themes from their extensive catalogue into long, flowing symphonic compositions, incorporating new vocals and passages from Aaron Stainthorpe. Sharing vocals is professional opera singer Lucie Roche, a talented soprano from France.
These arrangements have been brought to life in co-operation with keyboard maestro Johnny Maudling (of Bal Sagoth fame) as well as a clutch of talented classical musicians and will be released on May 30th (May 31st US) as ‘Evinta’, as a 2 disc set, inspired by My Dying Bride’s illustrious recordings of the past two decades.

An idea that has sat smoldering and never really had a reason to burn alive until now. 9 albums worth of darkness recreated anew to mark 20 years of MDB. My Dying Bride has been the leading light of doom metal since their debut album As the Flower Withers was released on Peaceville Records back in 1992. Influenced by acts such as Celtic Frost and Candlemass, the band’s heavy atmospherics have carved a huge worldwide following over the years and they remain at the pinnacle of the genre.

THE CLASSIC & HIGHLY-RARE PIECE OF DOOM/DEATH METAL FROM THE SWEDISH MASTERS – NOW ON PEACEVILLE WITH 2 BONUS TRACKS

Katatonia was formed in 1991 by Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse. Their debut album, ‘Dance of December Souls’, was released in 1993, gaining the band recognition for their eclectic brand of gothic doom/death metal and joining acts such as Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride as one of the genre’s defining bands. On future albums a newer, sleeker Katatonia sound came to the fore, starting with a streamlined and structured collection of melodic dark rock songs that became third album ‘Discouraged Ones’; the main evolution point for modern day Katatonia.

‘For Funerals to Come’ is an incredibly rare piece of death/doom metal mastery from back in 1994, which was recorded following Katatonia’s debut album, ‘Dance of December Souls’. It was recorded with Dan Swanö at the famous Unisound Studios and contains the trademarks of early era Katatonia, with the haunting guitar melodies and slow tempo combining with the tortured vocals of Jonas Renkse to create an aura of melancholy and gothic darkness.

This edition of ‘For Funerals to Come’ contains two extra tracks, ‘Black Erotica’ and ‘Love of the Swan’ (both also recorded at Unisound later in 1994), which had previously appeared on an obscure compilation, and contains new liner notes from co-founding member, writer & guitarist, Anders Nyström.

The Katatonia of 2012 is more potent, focused and creatively impactful than ever before. Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström - alongside guitarist Per Eriksson, bassist Niklas Sandin and drummer Daniel Liljekvist – are at the peak of their powers right now, and their brand new studio album Dead End Kings provides incontrovertible evidence of their unstoppable artistic momentum. A rich, adventurous and endlessly evocative masterwork that exhibits all the Swedish quintet’s established traits while absorbing countless fresh ideas into that monumental sonic brew, this is plainly the strongest and most beguiling album in the Katatonia catalogue to date. It also proves that sadness comes in many shades and that no one is safe from its cold allure.

“Dead End Kings represents progression and taking things to the next level,” says Renkse. ”The writing was a little more intense and spontaneous for this one. I think that’s the biggest difference. But it was made with the same mindset as the last few albums. It just had a little more fire involved. We don’t want to repeat ourselves. We are still hungry for new music.”
Dead End Kings was recorded at Ghost Ward Studios & The City Of Glass. The album was produced by Anders Nyström & Jonas Renkse, & mixed by David Castillo. Additionally, Katatonia is joined once again by Frank Default on sampling & atmospherics, plus a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering/ex-Octavia Sperati.

My Dying Bride has been the leading force in the death/ doom metal genre since their inception in the early 1990’s and have gone on to forge a legacy of greatness in the field over the past 2 decades, since 1992’s debut release, As The Flower Withers.

2009’s For Lies I Sire set and subsequently met new heights of expectation placed upon the legendary Yorkshire doom troupe, but A Map of All Our Failures is a considerable step up for the band and further voyage into the darkest depths of humanity, religion, folklore, love and death.

My Dying Bride’s distinctively sumptuous dual guitar melodies effortlessly flood into juggernaut doom metal riffs, with the vocals of Aaron Stainthorpe weaving a rich tapestry of tragic tales into the accompanying soundscapes. A Map of All Our Failures is perhaps best and most effectively summarised by guitarist Andrew Craighan, who describes the album as “a controlled demolition of all your hopes”.

The album recording and mix was completed at Futureworks Studios in Manchester UK, with long-standing production maestro Mags at the helm. Artwork appears courtesy of Rhett Podersoo at Machine Room.

The UK's own doomlords, My Dying Bride, have been imposing their legacy for over two decades, since their debut album 'As the Flower Withers' surfaced in 1992, & now the Yorkshire titans return with their latest work, 'The Manuscript', set for release on Peaceville Records on May 13th on CD & vinyl.

'The Manuscript' contains 4 new & exclusive songs; a dark voyage spanning over 27 minutes of supreme doom in the unmistakable My Dying Bride style of heaviness mixed with dark tales of foreboding. It was recorded & mixed at Futureworks Studios in Manchester, UK with the band's long-time producer, Mags.

As the band comments:
"The Manuscript features four monstrous tracks of brilliantly crafted metal that only My Dying Bride can do, with swathes of doom laden melancholy, harmonic beauty and thundering death metal all combined in their trademark sound. Four tales of tragedy, loss and bitter vengeance greet the listener with an added assault on the emotions too, leaving the soul grey and limp. There is beauty here, but it's carrying a dark blade".
