Enjoy my remix for the remix of 1962 “Twist a St Tropez” made by the great Belgium electronic band Telex, from 1978 "Looking for St. Tropez" album. Cover art is a back side of '79 UK vinyl single. 

Mixing and all sounds coming from Korg Gadget + me, playing my Yamaha electric bass guitar, thru Line6 PodXT guitar processor.

This song has a great history as well, really love it! In fact the Telex made this cover of a Rock’n’Roll song, by “Les Chats Sauvages” French band, which is even more ancient 1962! Yes, back in 1978, they decided to “surprise” everybody with playing it in “monotonous“ and very “electronic” way. Imagine. It was very unusual what at the time. And now …. That’s we/your guys are doing all the time now! Decades after!

As many of you know I collaborate with a lot of artists on SoundCloud.  Every collaboration and every relationship is unique.  I would estimate that about 80% of the people I ask to collaborate agree to collaborate.  

Then there is a big cliff in the next phase.  About 60% of the artist receive something from me and I never hear from them again.   I do not know what happens.  I am guessing they are uncomfortable with what I sent them.  Or perhaps they just are not sure what to do with it.

Usually if I send a piece and the person gets back to me that it doesn't work, we never wind up collaborating.  That was different for special Cecilia.  I sent one piece that did not work.  Then a second one that did not work.  Finally we found a way to collaborate that worked.  I appreciated Special Cecilia's commitment to finding a way to work together.  It was quite special.

Special Cecilia sent me vocals and I started working on some music that fit those vocals.  I actually did more than one song.  The other versions got set aside along the process.  But this one we both liked.

So here it is for your listening pleasure.  We hope you enjoy it.

Notes: 

If you are here for the second time a deep thank you.  Someone asked how far I thought I could push this track on the production end.... here is my answer and challenge accepted.  I ended pulling the track to see how close to Stone Temple Pilot's - Sour Girl I could get.  

What a ride it has been as I delved into new things and endless moments of frustration.  If Tainted Icarus were a group of other people and I was doing their mixing,  I would have choked them all at least once.  Organic, dynamic and each of them powering up their performances...but damn does that make for some difficult mixing. 

Sour Girl is a dark, heavily compressed and tricked out track...plus some killer low end

At the end of the day or weeks in this case I pushed, pulled prodded, twisted and worked with no limitations.... yeah... maybe you shouldn't use an EQ like that... but if it seemed to get me closer away I went. 

A lot of dead ends and dark, lifeless tracks as I pushed...

Something important still eludes me and I think it may be something analog.  The slight pitch shifts and elongated/slurring of the drum track and Scott's vocal tonal shift are a clue... tape brake? tape machine? reel size?  I could go on and on.  

A fun and demanding engineering project and forced me into learning more about the tools of the craft.  

Always about moving the ball forward!

With today's final print and bringing the project to a close.  I got close enough to be proud of what I achieved.  Sour Girl is peak STP and peak era of big budget productions.  Difficult to say the least and certainly a bit outgunned... but the challenge is how I learn best and there is always next time.

I hope when you hear Greed you enjoy it, you hear the hours of labor spent at the dead ends... hours spent trying to tweak a second of the track to fall in line with the theme.  It's not perfect.... but nothing I ever work on is going to be.  Its about inviting you into the space where the music was made and to share the moments captured.
