Atlanta based producer Matt Mansfield aka Piper Street Sound has created a collaborative EP of instrumental Reggae music with legendary Reggae guitarist Andy Bassford (Toots and the Maytals, Dennis Brown, Horace Andy, Culture, Roots Radics). 'Black Eyed Peace' follows 2020’s 'Small Plate / Rid Them EP' but puts a focus on guitar melodies masterfully executed by Maestro Bassford. The songs still bear Piper Street’s customary horn heavy and dub infused style but move into some new territory; elements of Rocksteady abound, major keys now bounce along side their minor key brethren, Yaya Brown’s akete drumming prods and propels the rhythms carved by the ultra tight drumming of Brian Daggett and the bass of Mansfield, Chris Case’s keyboard mastery blazes along side the horns of Will Scruggs, Jonathan Lloyd and Dashill Smith. 

'Black Eyed Peace' is a collaborative affair pieced together gradually over the course of the pandemic, the horn sessions miraculously took place the week before everything shut down, and all other elements were recorded in home studios and electronically gathered by Matt, who acted as track-herd and trail guide, scouting ahead, blazing a path while shooting fearful glances behind at the specter of disease and death that shadowed the procession through the forest of fear.

Piper Street Sound found a sacred glade, a clearing in the forest with room for hope, and got to work building a fire with his fellows, over which to craft this musical brew, heavily dosed with dubwise analog effects, shimmering and splashing spring reverbs, rich and hearty tape delays, the guitar mastery of a musical hero floats atop as frothy foam, and love for humanity is the base malt. Exploding onto the scene with their September 2018 ‘Open My Eyes’ EP, Onipa are rapidly making a name for themselves with their original, innovative fusion of afro grooves and electronics and explosive live show.

This remix EP brings together a diverse range of creative responses to the original material, incorporating house, UK garage, afro funky, wonky hiphop and leftfield electronica.

Famous for their mashups and bootlegs of legendary artists from Oumou Sangare to Tito Puente on their own Persie Edits label, and resident at London’s infamous Percolate parties, Krywald and Farrer keep all the afro bounce of the original ‘Woza’ while extending it into a proper uplifting dancefloor filler.

French producer Mr. Boom brings a decidedly UK garage influenced treatment to EP title track ‘Open My Eyes’, swapping the afro disco optimism of the original for a dark, hoods-up, London night-bus influenced late night sound.

South London Newcomer Marot has been carving out his own niche in bass-driven afro sounds. Here he brings a UK-funky, bassline driven take to ‘I Know’, adding a demented, carnival flavour to the dark tone of the original, complete with warped dark sounds and messed up whistles like some kind of acid-driven Buraka Som Sistema.

Original Onipa producer Tom Excell brings a heavily West-Coast, Flying Lotus-influenced rework of the original ‘Baala’, totally changing the tempo to create a completely different kind of track from the original.

Dream Diary label boss Oslo Roma finishes off with a deep, low-slung, gnawa-influenced rework, keeping the 6/8 feel and edgy, melancholy style of the original with the addition of a hypnotic bassline and dreamy, majestic pads.

We are proud to present you the first remix single release from Timewarp inc's fourth studio LP album "Theory of Revolution". This will be a remix series that will constantly continue during this year, providing one new single track remixed, bringing you something new & fresh to discover! 

This first remix single is brought by Athens based producer RSN. As you can discover on this particular remix, RSN managed to bring the original song's dub-reggae-funk style along with the Reggae-Raga & Dancehall vocals from Gobey into his music style & territory, blended with soul, trip hop, downtempo and his floating music character over the original song. An instrumental version of the remix is included on the release.

To celebrate the forthcoming release of their new album, Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub, Guillaume Metenier’s Soul Sugar collective has offered up a brand-new, digital-only single, ‘Cool Down’.

Co-produced by Metenier with fellow French artists Blundetto and Blackjoy, the track is a sun-kissed slab of 21st century dub built around a typically weighty rhythm and joyous, afternoon-bright instrumentation. Underpinned by hazy bass, authentically shuffling reggae-style drums and echoing effects, ‘Cool Down’ boasts some superb guitar licks courtesy of Blundetto, as well as inspired synthesizer and organ motifs provided by Metenier under his now familiar Booker Gee alias.

‘Cool Down’ is one of a handful of previously unheard tracks on Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub, Soul Sugar’s fourth album. The set gathers together previously released but now hard-to-find tracks that the collective has released on different formats over the last few years, including inspired reggae cover versions of Luther Vandross favourite ‘Never Too Much’ and Marvin Gaye classic ‘I Want You’. It will be released by Gee Recordings later this Spring.
