Following on from a stellar Di Chiara Brothers performance last week, we take things deeper with one of Italy's most impressive producers in 2014. He's a man who's tracks have garnered attention from every corner of the globe in the last twelve months, winning the plaudits and welcome of renowned imprints such as Parquet, Ajunadeep and Steyoyoke. He is of course Whomi! 2014 has been a massive year for the producer, who's deep, enchanting tunes have found their way into the sets of some major players, which include the likes of Mano Le Tough, Hunter/Game & John Digweed. For her ON DECK debut, Mija showcases what it is that's so quickly elevated her above the hoi polloi  – She's as comfortable working through stylish house tunes as she is dropping hip-hop influenced bangers as she is rinsing tearout jams, and all in one set. This collection in particular starts off with some sleek numbers by Durante, Jack Beats and Worthy before weaving through Troyboi and her own (+ Ghastly) remix of Diplo and then ends up with an epic Skrillexian tearout via SPAG HEDDY. Oh, and the whole thing was mixed live.

Press Release:
TimeDog is a moniker of multi-instrumentalist and experimental composer Pete Burton. His music is an organic and personal journey. Improvisation and long live takes are critical for his sound as a means to translate aspects of the human condition as directly as possible. The variation and diversity in themes and styles found throughout this album is a direct result of this compositional process. His music is largely made in his Glasgow based studio on a variety of hardware analogue and digital synthesizers, guitars, piano and a multitude of percussion instruments with field recordings also woven into some of his pieces.

The opener takes the listener into a digital dreamscape, improvised in one take, leading us into the epic ambient excursion of "The Pilgrimage". The music then darkens in mood with the bowed guitar-driven "Ancient Tales" brooding ominously before a shower of hailstorms marks the begining of "Fear of Change", a Cage inspired avant-garde bed of chaotic percussion traversing through haunting piano structures (recorded in the piano carrells of a local library). "The Gateway" offers us exactly that, through its guitar-led, poignant melody  we find ourselves bathed in the warmth of "Beyond Love". From there the album leads us through multiple dimensions of sound including the wall of percussion in "Let Them In", the melancholic looped field recordings of "Conversations", the counterpoint guitars in "Counters" and the drones of "Soul Mother". Finally we're back in the piano room with a delicate and beautiful piece that reminds us that our presence in the present is always fragile.

The latest episode of the Select Cuts series is presented by Northern Ireland's Confute. After nearly a decade of great success as an integral piece of The Japanese Popstars, Gary Curran has embarked on what is already an impressive solo adventure, despite the project still being very much in its infancy.

Standout early releases on the likes of GEM and Compatible have seen big support from heavyweights such as Danny Tenaglia and Maceo Plex and his ascent looks only set to continue with a monstrous new release on Germany's GND out today.

Furthermore, a collaboration alongside fellow Irishman R.E.C. is impending on John Digweed's Bedrock Records and Confute will also make an appearance on Steve Lawler's Viva Music imprint in a joint project with Will Monotone under the guise of Morrissey Blvd.

With Zane Lowe pedestalling the first glimpse into Bensley’s diverse soundscape, ‘Fandango’ was a precursor for this forthcoming debut. ‘Next Generation’ is a bold move; with drum & bass being a genre which has certainly stood the test of time, newcomers have incredibly big shoes to fill. However, Bensley incorporates an innovative and incredibly intricate set of production skills to hold a title of his own.

But what can you expect from an artist who was signed after sending a single demo to revered label head Andy C. That’s despite having no previous releases or having any other music available to stream online. He was somewhat of a mystery.
‘Fandango’ was that track. And it was premiered as a world exclusive on leading tastemaker Radio1, which followed with support from the likes of Mistajam on 1xtra, as well as DJs on both Kiss and XFM.

Already demonstrating his widespread appeal with just one track, his air of mystery is now about to be broken. He’s definitely an anomaly; being only nineteen and having impressed so many people.

‘Next Generation’ is a 10-track journey through an impressively diverse soundscape. Whether it’s half-time breakdowns or the incorporation if cross genre-pollination it shows an astounding ability which will not go unrecognised.
From the opening bars of ‘Wildfire’, to the softly spoken pads and atmospheric note arpeggios of ‘Rain Dance’, then wrapped up by aptly named closing track ‘Aftermath’, there’s no denying Bensley’s masterful artistry.

Title-track ‘Next Generation’ leads you by the hand with snippets of humanistic sample, flowing in and out of its construct. It’s built upon by striking note progressions, a relaying of patterns which chop and change the mix. Carefully placed subs add impact, with emphasis given on each break, carrying the track forward down a steep drop with each slab of bass.

Drawing together a dizzying and fresh array of new sounds, this album indicates why Bensley is a forerunner within the new generation of music comers. Its representative of the fast paced technological setting of music production he grew up around; it also proves that Bensley is able to tap into dimensions which are often unheard of in other bodies of work.

All Basses Covered (The Infamous South Beach Set, December 2012)

One of my early mixtapes.  This was done in 1996 for Fat Beats to sell in the store.  I did it 100% live, which meant that any time I messed up making it I had to go back and start over.  I only had one Technics 1200 at the time, and one crappy belt drive. To my ears now it's full of rough transitions, weird tempo changes, and off beat cuts... But it worked at the time, and was my entré to radio in NYC when G-Man and J-Smooth of the Underground Railroad radio show heard it and invited me up to spin. All original vinyl on a breaks and beats concept.  Hope you enjoy this artifact!
