Falling into Water 

'Water into Water' is the first birthing of sounds 
which have been dreaming me for more than 10 years. 

This track was inspired by the waterfalls in Maui. 
It came to be after meeting photographer David Talley, 
creating this image of the waterfall in Portland. 
The photo process motivated me to crack open 
and complete this song to go with it.

inspiring my mind 
to become crystal clear 
as thoughts appear

For the last decade, Argentina has become the epicenter of a musical explosion that characteristically blends folk music from the surrounding Andes and electronic beats. The artist arguably responsible for its emergence on a global platform is one named Chancha Via Circuito- a Buenos Aires native named Pedro Canale whose first album Rodante (2008) opened the floodgates by pushing the borders of Cumbia listeners weren't even aware existed. He's gone on to release other highly acclaimed albums such as Rio Arriba (2010), which Resident Advisor described as 'aural magical realism', and Amansara (2014), which catapulted him onto acclaimed international stages and received praises from Pitchfork to the New York Times. 

Four years later, in the midst of some very notable global turbulence, Chancha Via Circuito brings us his highly anticipated new album Bienaventuranza- a word that essentially means bliss. Replete with his signature touches of Andean instruments (think lots of flute and charango), the folkloric elements on this album blend fluidly with danceable and digestible electronic beats. He's been cooking this record slowly, with unprecedented amounts of care and in a much more collaborative manner than his past albums.

On May 26, 2018, beneath the near-full moon, we gathered at CoSM ~ Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, to share in journey through sound, art, celebration, and prayer. 

It was an honor to share these songs in this space of visionary convergence, prayer, and communion with the creative spirit. 

To send them out as beacons of beauty and inspiration, as offerings to the creative spirit and flame within, to the magic of the moment, and all that opens to us when we open ourselves as conduits for the highest self and the force of life.

This set is performed through live looping, building each song from the foundation up in the moment, layer by layer of vocal melody, harmony, and word. It was the opening invocation for the evening, before Erothyme and I played a collaborative set, and he closed the evening with a set of his own.

MATEO KINGMAN PRESENTS HIS SECOND ALBUM, ASTRO 

Mateo Kingman conceives of his second album Astro as a cure for the healthy. It’s a journey across the constellation of the snake, a journey at once earthly and cosmic. The poetic text expressed with a multiplicity of vocal timbres drives the musical journey, starting with the decision to face up to our demons, passing through a deep sense of vertigo and sacred healings, to return us to ourselves, reconciled and grateful. 

Musically, Astro expresses an intense investigation, tying together different threads: contemporary urban song (trap, hip hop, and elements of electronic music), traditional Latin American melodies influenced by shamanic icaro chants, and the emphasis on synthesizers, resulting in a new, hypnotic kind of sound.  

The journey begins with “Umbral”, its introduction reminiscent of a prayer, a representation of the moment when we understand we need help. With each song we go further into the meaning of this introspective journey. “Puerta de Sal” is an invitation to let ourselves go, embrace the absence of control and take a leap of faith into the unknown. “Último Aliento”, made in collaboration with Gustavo Santaolalla, speaks of the acceptance of death as an indispensablepart of life. “Religar”, the first single from the record, is about reconciliation, the possibility of returning to oneself after the disintegration of the self. The journey ends with “Astro”, which gives its name to the album, and represents the learning we carry with us after a spiritual journey. 

In a world in which we increasingly need more stimuli and approval from the outside, Astro invites us to take a look inside and explore all the aspects of the self, from the darkest to the lightest. On this record, Mateo Kingman shows a strong point of view as the author, although he moves away from the sounds and themes with which he made his name, daring to mix current trends, urban rhythms and vocal experiments, forming a constellation through which we can all travel, showing a clear personal and musical evolution. 

Music composed, arranged and recorded by Mateo Kingman and Ivis Flies in Quito, Ecuador, except for "Lucero” which contains an adaptation of "Tonada de Ordeño", from Antonio Estévez. In honor of Simón Díaz.
