This is a one-take open recording of a piece I created with fellow Banff Arts Centre residents in the Canadian winter of 2006 to honour the eternally free spirit of Hector Peterson. Hector was a 13-year-old school student who was slain by the racist regime during the Soweto uprising on 16 June 1976. His memory lives on.

Thanks to my sisters and brothers who contributed their musical skills selflessly in recording this memory. Tracy Chapman’s former engineer Jared Miller did an amazing job of arranging the musicians and microphones in a large room so that he could capture the living sounds as they filled the space.

Featured musicians include Cheryl L'Hirondelle (vocals), Joseph Naytowhow (narration in Cree), Vincent Ho (piano), Rae Howell (xylophone), Antonio Gonzales (RIP) (bassoon), Catherine Thompson (percussion).

This collection of atmospheric deepstep tracks is further along on the continuum of the Subtextures compilation that I put together for Interchill Records back in 2016. It took a few years to assemble and was made for the digital artist Android Jones (www.androidjones.com) who generously let us use a piece of his phenomenal art for the Subtextures cover design. 

Respect and praises to all of the artists and labels who put out such wickedly chill tunes. Much gratitude to J. Job for the finishing touches.
