Higher education is the site of an ongoing conflict. At the heart of this struggle are the precariously employed faculty ‘contingents’ who work without basic job security, living wages or benefits. Yet they have the incentive and, if organized, the power to shape the future of higher education.

Power Despite Precarity is part history, part handbook and a wholly indispensable resource in this fight. Joe Berry and Helena Worthen outline the four historical periods that led to major transitions in the worklives of faculty of this sector. They then take a deep dive into the 30-year-long struggle by California State University lecturers to negotiate what is recognized as the best contract for contingents in the US.

The authors ask: what is the role of universities in society? Whose interests should they serve? What are the necessary conditions for the exercise of academic freedom?  Providing strategic insight for activists at every organizing level, they also tackle 'troublesome questions’ around legality, union politics, academic freedom and how to recognize friends (and foes) in the struggle.

From 2001 to 2002, Laura Payeur and Monica Panzarino were upperclasswomen in the BFA program at the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University in western New York state.  The pair collaborated on hundreds of hours of improvised electronic music, all recorded live.  Payeur and Panzarino utilized a unique combination of sonic elements and realtime processing methods in their work, including but not limited to toy instruments, an analog synthesizer, a vintage organ, an Alesis MidiVerb Effects Processor, Reaktor software, and Harmonizer software for a Commodore Amiga 2000.  They released three albums.  2002’s “demo liberation n*stuff”, and “Last Jam” were inspired by a concept the pair called “demo liberation.”  Demo liberation (or the “Demo Liberation Front”) “liberated” pre-programmed demo sounds or songs found in toy keyboards, guitars, computer software, and other sources.  Sadly, their collaboration was cut short, as Payeur was killed in a car accident in Thorndike, Maine in March 2003.  She was 24.

Monica Panzarino (b. 1979, New York, NY) is a video artist and educator.  Her video, performance, and installation works combine real-time image and sound processing with a feminist, and often humorous, critique of American popular culture.

Panzarino received a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2002.  Her work has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally at venues including Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, Germany, WRO Media Art Biennale in Wroclaw, Poland, Winnipeg Underground Film Festival in Winnipeg, Canada, Vanity Projects in New York, NY, Phase Space in Brooklyn, NY, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago Underground Film Festival, and Athens International Film + Video Festival in Athens, OH.   She has been an artist-in-residence at Outpost Artist Resources in Queens, NY, the Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY, Signal Culture in Owego, NY, and Institute for Electronic Arts in Alfred, NY.  Her videos are distributed by Vtape in Toronto, Canada.

Panzarino lives and works in Queens, NY.
