Innovative club producer Syz is next up on Untitled 909 with an electrifying mix that channels the dizzying energy you can find within his releases for labels such as Control Freak Recordings, Femme Culture, and Pressure Dome. Very, very soon you will find him on the much-loved Bristol/Berlin label Banoffee Pies Records. A much-loved DJ within the UK circuit, he has played at events for the likes of Unbound, Bliss Print, The Cause, Queen's Yard Summer Party and next month will be playing for the Maple Cuts crew to Venue MOT. 

In his own words, “the mix is a club ready excursion into some recent favourites I've been hammering. Unreleased music from myself, Tammo Hesselink and Amaliah inside, weaved in with some tribal classics from Oliver Ho and many more flavours.”

Swiss pro­duc­er and DJ NVST (@ghettonast) likes to shock her crowd. She thrives on clashing sounds, scenes, genres and textures into uncomfortable new worlds, all of which is a result of coming up from the illegal party scene in her homeland. She works hard to develop and preserve that native scene in many different ways: she is part of the Female:Pressure fam­i­ly, co-runs the French label Big Sci­ence and hold­s down res­i­den­cies on LYL­Ra­dio and Rinse FM. 
 
This week's mix was recorded in Le Bourg, a club in Lausanne that NVST tells us has recently been taken over and is working hard to bring something fresh to the scene. The mix is filled with unreleased tracks from NVST's favourite artists and forthcoming tunes from labels like Big Science, Kindergatern and moshtrq next to some of her all-time favourites. It opens with a collage that includes Tamika D. Mallory's 'State of Emergency' speech of which she says "I remember the first time I heard it so accurately; I knew I should include it symbolically as well because it resonates so much with me."

Hi My name is Mor, My pronouns are She/Her but i'm also comfortable with they/them.

What sound would you listen to… if it was the only thing you could listen to 24/7?

Rain sounds.

What film has the best score?

There will be Blood By Johnny Greenwood , or Tar’s by Hildur Guðnadóttir who also did Chernobyl. 

Describe in detail your favorite place in the club?

The dance floor, there's no club without a dance floor and no party without a solid dancing crowd (not quantity, quality) its where all the magic happens!

What is your favorite party/collective where you reside and why?

Reef and Subglow, both parties organized by dear friends. Reef is a special space for bass music on the edges centered in the best club ,Berghain. It's great seeing that music have place there and work so well. 

Subglow is a new party that is already cultivated an amazing community around it, its incredible to see energy on the dance floor at those parties.

If you could transfer all your knowledge from what you do now into something completely different, what would it be and why?

A have a secret wish ( well not anymore lol) to be a booker at a club or a festival, building balanced diverse line ups is an exciting task. Probably not easy as well.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Quality over quantity

Introduce yourself? Pronouns? Where do you currently reside? 

Baby Leo (he/him) residing in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. Soon I’ll be relocating to San Francisco, where I grew up.

Describe your walk around where you live?

Consistently stunningly beautiful. I spend the majority of my time in Bedstuy and am always so grateful to be here. Big trees, beautiful buildings, many friends.

Favorite DJ mixing trick? 

Playing a great song, letting it finish and then playing a different great song. No blend. 

How do you make a mix? Any key tips?

I have three decks at home and record on a little zoom thingy. I may have to do it a few times because I don’t do any post-editing and the first attempt is usually clipping pretty hard despite my best efforts. To prepare, I get fairly stoned and just mix for a while and go back in my rekordbox history and pull the good parts into a playlist. 

Describe your most recent dream in detail...

I almost never dream, but last week had a pretty strange and memorable one. I was involved with some pretty sketchy drug users who were into eating ancient dead people’s big toes. The high was extremely addictive and terrible, but once it started there was basically no way out. The toe that was presented to me was very gray and moldy and flaking apart except the toenail was still pretty solid. I woke up before eating it.

What is your favorite party/collective where you reside and why?

Groovy Groovy. 100%. As a dancer or DJ, you get complete rave catharsis every time, with a courageous, loving and boundless DIY energy guiding the ship. The attendees are open and adventurous listeners. Everything - sound, lights, artwork, curation is life affirming. It makes me want to live this life fully. I played it twice last year which were the two most gratifying DJ sets of my life.

If you could transfer all your knowledge from what you do now into something completely different, what would it be and why?
When I find out, I will just do it. I have made many life changes before and plan to keep transforming. I don’t know what comes next for me, but I know it’s coming and it will certainly be different. I am excited about kitesurfing and eventually hang gliding, but it certainly won’t require a transfer of any knowledge.

Where do you see yourself musically in 2069?

Hopefully somewhere that doesn’t currently exist.  Probably mostly deaf. Perhaps just enjoying the feeling of sonic vibration. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

My vision for this community is articulated and realized through Dripping. You will have to come and find out. Dripping is June 30-July 2 2023. Dripping.fyi

He’s also one of the key minds behind Unbound Events, a London-based events platform using underground music as a vehicle to elevate minorities and raise awareness of social issues. He draws inspiration from Afrofuturism to guide his creative pursuits, focusing on the intersection between race, identity, history and culture. 

As a DJ, the guiding principle of Afrofuturism manifests through the fusion of techno with angular rhythms and UK-inspired club sounds to create something respecting the black roots of electronic music whilst remaining firmly forward-facing and unique.
