Taking two of the most tireless acts away from their passports has yielded an album and stage show fit to clobber any unsuspecting rap lover. Fresh Kils is a "producer/DJ/sample magician…involved with two of the 5 most written about rap albums in Canada", according to Allya Kanani at Imprint Show Review. PremRock is no slouch either: "The hirsute and hooded rapper casts himself in a very short but worthy lineage…of rhymers artfully influenced by Aesop Rock" says Jeff Weiss of Pitchfork/LA Weekly. 

Thousands of words have been spilled on the technical prowess of Toronto producer Fresh Kils and his assault on the MPC, while New York emcee PremRock has written thousands more crisscrossing the globe studying Tom Waits and Ernest Hemingway. After three tours, countless studio sessions in Toronto, and numerous jaunts spiked by booze in back alley shakedowns, PremRock and Fresh Kils have officially linked up on record and on the road to milk their notoriety for all it's worth. 

PremRock is fresh off of his one-two punch of A Clean Well Lighted Place LP and Who Art in Nada EP, and Fresh Kils needed a challenge after winning the producer championship at both Toronto's Sound Battle Royale and the Bangerz Beat Battle. Together, they own every inch of accomplishment on the indie rap circuit, from freestyle battles to MPC beatdowns, sharing stages with giants like Nas, Ice Cube, and Rakim, and lassoing in Homeboy Sandman, Moka Only, El Da Sensei & C Rayz-Walz on the duo's first joint album, due in late September. 

The album PremRock & FreshKils is an instrument of flavorful angst, born from a partnership of two vagabonds born to bless stages but remain steely eyed to getting paid in "props". With a nod to Check Your Head-era Beastie Boys, PremRock finesses smooth breaks of all shapes with New York straight talk. PremRock stirs up lessons from De La Soul's Stakes is High twenty years later: we're still being eaten alive by our indulgences. As a bartender from and stalwart of the independent New York indie rap scene, PremRock is trusted by anyone looking for a good Old Fashioned or a frenetic live show that's kept him on the road for half a decade straight. As Impose Magazine described him, he's a "bar stool scholar" and the new album is his master thesis on keeping your edge when the sensibilities of your craft change on a dime. 

FreshKils answers the most important question for any rap album: "Are the beats banging?" You goddamn right. FreshKils blends the unquantized mastery of Slum Village-era J Dilla with the bounce of El-P's crowd roaring Run the Jewels production. This is boom bap for modernists - keep it warm, keep the heads nodding, keep it mean, clean, and chock full of thump. He tones down his Warlord of the Battle on the MPC and gives PremRock enough space and melody to clear the decks. Knowing restraint is the true mark of a master, and on this album FreshKils segues deftly into his new role as Instrumentalist first, Head Stomping Beat Battler second.

These guys got the right fix for the wrong crowd: the glimmering girls of the road, the rough-living mopes in the Northeast corridor, the purists who call bullshit, the big shots with short memories, The album is cool and magisterial, the live show is pumped full of surging blood. PremRock and FreshKils: they have it taken care of.

When it came out in 1984 the far-out album Sweet Sweet Dreams by Trinidad & Tobago’s Shadow (aka Winston Bailey) was described as “way ahead of its time”. Undeservedly it was panned by critics and, unable to reach markets, disappeared into the dusty record collections of a few music aficionados. Now, more than three decades later that cosmic dance-floor UFO is about to take off again, change all that and set the record straight. Remastered and cut by Frank Meritt at The Carvery the album is truly a masterpiece.

But who is this Shadow behind Sweet Sweet Dreams? Shadow is a man of understated magnitude. A truly enigmatic artist, he first emerged in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1970s, becoming a part of the tapestry of Caribbean music and reinvigorating calypso at the time. Calypso, the indigenous folk music of Trinidad and Tobago, has roots in West African kaiso rhythms, French Creole influences, and the hardships endured by the African slaves brought to Trinbago, whose descendants still use it as a tool for satire, self-expression,  and social commentary. Calypso has also given birth to several other music genres, including soca, with its uptempo beats and festival context. Shadow effortlessly moves between both.

Accoring to Carl "Beaver" Henderson, one of Trinidad's veteran producers; “Shadow broke all the traditional musical rules and made his own and that made him a musical giant. He changed the face of Calypso music in 1974 with the release of "Bassman" a tune in which Bass and magnificent horn line took central stage changing Soca music for ever. What Shadow did with his music was to put calypso on the International Dance circuit, giving it a totally different groove. You could take his music and swing it in any direction; Disco, Pop, Calypso, you name it. His music was different from anything that existed before”. 

This inert creativeness culminated in Sweet Sweet Dreams which was arranged by Shadow and deals with burning and ever-relevant themes like love and the ups and downs of relationships. a surprising fact for someone mainly known for his satirical and political lyrics. It prompted his manager to wonder if Shadow had written the lyrics while in a state of ‘tabanca’ (a word used in Trinidad and Tobago to describe lovesickness). 

Sweet Sweet Dreams was recorded at the legendary SHARC studios, located on a hill in Chaguaramas (near Port of Spain) and despite a fantastic sound and monster Soca-boogie tunes like “Lets get it together”, “Lets Make it Up” and “Way, Way Out” the album was a commercial flop, probably due to the fact that it didn’t sound like anything else coming out of Trinidad & Tobago at the time: It fused a range of different rhythms and new sounds, primarily heavy synth riffs.

Shadow took the album’s lack of success in his stride with usual aplomb:
“When I did Sweet Dreams I expect something could happen. But nothing big happen because I have no big market and no distribution and all this thing now. So I just cool myself and move on to another song. I wasn’t doing just one song. I used to always have plenty songs at the one time. And be writing music”.

What Shadow didn’t realise back then was that the proto-electronic cocktail he had mixed in 1984 would only find the recognition it deserved three decades later. Life has swung full circle: Sweet Sweet Dreams has come true and been elevated to holy grail status becoming one of the most sought-after Caribbean disco records in existence. Asked about this turn around Shadow mused  “I’m trying to understand that part. A lot of people ask me for it over a few years now. But I never give anybody it. That music wasn’t for then. It’s for now”.

Ewan Pearson can do no wrong, can he? For the best part of twenty years now, the DJ, producer, writer, and academic's been recording, releasing, remixing, and playing the kind of sensate focused house that feels like the sweatiest, most loved-up high you've ever had from a best mate at sunrise, which is why he's a firm favourite here at THUMP UK. We even considered erecting a monument to him in the middle of the office by the HR team didn't seem happy about the prospect, so we stuck to sticking photos of him all over our desk. Which makes us look like either the massive fans we are, or deranged psychopaths planning an assassination.

Just for clarity, we're the former, and that's why we're so excited to be letting you listen to Pearson's typically sublime remix of "Sleep Stream" by Berlin duo Languages.

The EP that the track's taken from, which arrives on Days of Being Wild on the 2nd of December, is the pair's debut, and it's a very strong start. Pearson's floaty and fluttering, agile and fragile, sultry and sensual remix is one of the most pleasurable refixes we've heard all year and if you're not charmed by it's lilting cosmic disco charms then, well, there's no hope for you.

If I Were You is the infectious first single and title track from Chris Hurn’s long awaited second album due for release in April 2017. 

It’s been five years since the young New Zealander’s debut, Too Busy Dreamin’ in 2011, which spawned a SoundCloud hit with the song Whatcha Got (500,000 plays) leading to a publishing deal and a license by Swatch for a global ad campaign. Since then Hurn has been busy writing scores for film, finishing his university studies, playing in his band and recently relocating to Kuala Lumpur. 

The forthcoming new album continues with the folk pop style evident on the previous release but is a more polished affair full of catchy hooks and well crafted writing showcasing the artist’s further maturation and development as a songwriter and performer.

After working for twenty years with some amazing artists from all over the world, Monkey Records is no longer accepting any new artist submissions and Braddock is now focused on releasing his own music.
