Dead Herring is the pseudonym for the solo music project of multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Daniel Gowers. Born and raised in South London, he initially started learning both drums and classical piano at a young age, the latter of which he then gave up on due to adolescent petulance. It wouldn't be the last time he would give up on something important to him, but it might have been the first. After a short, foolish attempt at becoming an academic, his grand designs were interrupted by a descent into total self-destruction. 

He returned home, consumed by nihilism and misanthropy, taught himself guitar and wrote a series of almost deliberately unlistenable thrash-grunge tracks with two friends, for a project called Goldstein. The result, an LP entitled Tea Party, despite being a total sonic mess, was an experiment in abandon, and formed the foundation of Herring's songwriting ideas.

A few months of problematic drinking later, he enrolled at Leeds Conservatoire to pursue a faded dream, and waste money on a pointless degree.

He spent his time there writing prolifically, learning to sing properly, creating songs of a totally different nature than anything else he had previously played. Instead of thrashing around with 8-string guitars and screaming about hate, he decided to sit down with a Martin acoustic and write some melancholic songs about love, death, and fate. After the fantastically inconsequential Soundcloud release of a sparse album of live recordings ('Open & Shut') in early 2020, the artist previously known as Red Herring went through a long period of writing nothing at all, shutting himself in his room and sleepwalking through life.

He has finally returned, with a new name, and several more monkeys on his back to throw at unsuspecting audiences. Please note that, being Dead, it is of no consequence to him whether or not his audiences wish to have monkeys thrown at them.
