Gregorian chant, in its all-embracing spirituality and poetry, appeals to the deeper levels of the human heart. Monks in the Middle Ages composed and performed this music as an integrated part of their daily occupation with Sacred Scripture. Throughout the centuries Gregorian chant has enriched and deepened the liturgy of the church, and has been a source of inspiration in every period of European music history. Under the leadership of Alexander M. Schweitzer, Consortium Vocale presents chants from the five Sundays of Lent, Palm Sunday and Good Friday, recorded in the medieval church at Ringsaker in Norway.

The Theotokos, the Mother of God, has many titles that reflect gentleness and is known by many people as a quiet, meek, and subservient lady. Though she is certainly those things, she is also a fierce warrior, fighting alongside each of us in prayer to support us until we are finished with our journey here on the earth. She is uncommonly known as "The Dissolver of Iron," a name given to her when, through prayer, she dissolved the chains of St. Matthias when he was held captive as prisoner and dissolved the iron of an entire city. As she did with physical chains, the intercessions of the Theotokos can assist in dissolving the chains of our sins, strongholds, addictions, negativity and anything else separating us from the Love of her Son, Christ the Living God.

This Eastern Orthodox hymn, composed by Nectarios of Aegina, is sometimes chanted at the beginning of Vespers. Recorded here are two of the four verses of the hymn, to which additional harmonies have been added.

O ever Virgin Mary of all the world, the Lady.(Refrain)

The oldest hymn to the Theotokos (BVM), found in a Coptic Orthodox Christmas liturgy of the third century. 

Under thy protection
we seek refuge,
Holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions
in our needs,
but from all dangers
deliver us always,
