About the CD:
I was always aware of Bukem, another DJ who managed to make underground rumblings to the listeners of the British dance scene without  us seemingly knowing who they even were... we just knew about them anyway.  immediately fell in love with this CD once Makoto's 'Inside Your Love' rolled in with MC Conrad's silky smooth mc'ing riding over the top. I'd always loved drum and bass from a distance, but from hearing that track... I was forever a massive fan. I bought into the Good Looking label, bought alot of old releases, all the mix cd's and then fell in love with Bukem's downtempo sister label 'Cookin Records'. This influence was one of the main sounds of my early vinyl days and has gone on to educate and delight for another decade and more. Play it loud, ride the groove, feel the bass. BUKEM!

During her childhood, Lobsta from Zürich was introduced to the diverse world of drum and bass through her brother, a budding musician in the noughties. In 2017, she tried her hand at the turntables and honed her skills under guidance of Upcut, a well-known and long-time DJ in the Swiss drum and bass scene. Recently, Lobsta also ventured into digital mixing. She has kept her passion for Oldschool and Vintage Drum and Bass to this day. As member and DJ for Divercity Zurich, Lobsta excels both at creating a captivating atmosphere and telling musical stories. Despite the wide array of possibilities in the realm of digital mixing she remains true to her roots and aims, where possible, to play vinyl records on her MK2 turntables
Now a seasoned DJ herself, in her eyes nothing beats the combination of the smell of a dubplate and the pulsating club lights....We are very pleased to feature DJ Lobsta for the first time with an exclusive vinyl retrospective capturing those back-in-the-day-vibes within a timespan of the last 20+ years, this is as real as it gets for the gunfinger-slinging ravers, a sure fire rinse out!

Bern Bass Podcast 112 - Lobsta (July 2024)

Mad B from Zürich is one of Switzerland’s pioneering Drum&Bass DJs with a career spanning over 35 years, starting with Acid House in the late 80s, on to Breakbeat in the early 90s before fronting Jungle and D&B as one of the Swiss stalwarts until the mid00s. It all started with a trip to London in 1990 with BangGoes and HarryUp that lead to raving at Rage at Heaven. The music played by the likes of Grooverider and Fabio, then labelled Jungle Techno or British Hardcore, was unlike anything they heard before and blew their minds. Apart from clubs and record shops, pirate radio stations were the only other way to source the new style so they recorded tapes on the hotel radio, most notably of DJ Hype’s shows on Fantasy FM. Back home in Zürich, the infamous Dex Smasher Posse, formed by Potty Pit, Carl „Freezer“ Dust and Kemi J, held the first Swiss Breakbeat raves at Sihlkanal and Magic Factory. Rave was just about to explode in Switzerland and in september of 1992 the first Street Parade took place with the crew at the forefront of the soundtrucks. Superhyped, Mad B started to host his own club nights, mostly illegal raves, such as Knurrhahn Atelier and later on co-promoted with DJ Viola what is considered to be the first regular Swiss Jungle Night, Rumble in the Jungle at Clubraum Rote Fabrik. This is where he met DJ Led Tampi who was establishing his own crew, the Metropolitan Bass Scientists MBS, which Mad B joined later on. The collective played regularly at major events and raves all over the country and gained international recognition with their production output on the City Rollaz Inc. label. When MBS split in the late 90s, Mad B joined the original MUTE collective and continued to play regular gigs at the most important venues of the era such as a residency at Rohstofflager, Kanzlei or UG to name but a few. After all these years, he is still around and active as a passionate DJ and raver, loving the music more than ever. We are very pleased to feature this legendary Swiss protagonist with a unique podcast in two parts, one going back in time to those incredible sounds of the early 90s UK Hardcore movement and two showing where he’s heading to in the future in form of a fresh upfront D&B Mix, enjoy and keep raving!

The name SNES, inspired by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, is no coincidence. His passion for gaming led him to his very first Drum’n’Bass event back in 2007. As the soundtrack to a Mario Kart 64 contest, the fast-paced beats and deep bass instantly hooked him. It was also there that he met nice nine, then drummer of the live band «¡Bassda!».
Only a year later, SNES bought his first pair of turntables and stacked up on vinyl at the legendary record store «Freshcuts» (today known as «Analog»). Right across the street, in the underground club «CMC», he tested his setup – and even played his very first gig. After countless raves in Zurich, Aarau, Winterthur and beyond, it was the nights in St. Gallen that left the strongest impression. Soon after, he joined his first crew: the bEASTside.Crew from Eastern Switzerland.
With the closure of CMC in October 2014, an era came to an end. At the same time, the bEASTside.Crew quietly stepped back from the scene. For SNES, however, this was just the beginning: together with nice nine and OctaState, he founded the St. Gallen Drum’n’Bass label Local Bass Movement. Their mission: to push Drum’n’Bass in the region and connect like-minded people who share the same passion for the music. The first rave took place at the club «Tankstell» – still one of his favorite spots to this day. Over time, more DJs joined the crew: Leaneye, Anotha90sKid, Manitu and Phill Turner, all hailing from Eastern Switzerland.
Whether it’s smooth liquid tunes on a summer night or heavy-hitting neurofunk at 5 a.m. – SNES knows how to read the crowd and deliver exactly what they need. With his versatility and stage presence, he’s not only a driving force within Local Bass Movement but also a frequent guest at other crews and raves. Today, SNES stands as a key figure in the Eastern Swiss Drum’n’Bass scene.
