Ahead of the release of his debut album Clear on Numbers, London-based producer FFT provides a heavy and hazy mix, ranging from new-age flute washes and grasshopper dusk choruses to metallic electro with harsh machinic whirrs, to chopped and screwed edits full to the brim with molten bass. Cuts from Cypress Hill, The Bug, and Oneohtrix Point Never are mutated till they’re swimming in the dark depths of the sonic fog.

Very much a part of the current Latin-American born and influenced wave of DJs and producers breaking through and dominating the underground airwaves – from Nick Leon to INVT and Bitter Babe to Siu Mata – Porto-via-Belo Horizonte DJ and Yellow Island Records (releases from Kessler, Boulderhead) label head ALBIN (@albindj) is highlighting Brazilian community through his blend of Baile Funk, Miami-Bass, forward-thinking Techno and underground UK Dubstep, Breaks & Jungle; channeling the spirits of both South America and the UK and finding a sweet spot between the bounce, bass and energy of each continent's aesthetics.

Previously supported by Ransom Note, NYC collective HAUS of ALTR, Craigie Knowes, Rinse FM, Mixmag and Groove Magazin, ALBIN held down a residency at Balamii Radio under his Yellow Island Records label between 2020 and 2022, inviting more than sixty guests from around the globe to connect with the deep-yet-dutty Yellow Island aesthetic, sharing the decks with Amelia Holt, Zopelar, John Beltran, Andrea (Ilian Tape), Glenn Astro, label-resident Etari and more, in addition to a residency at Internet Public Radio where he invited Soela, Paul P (Of Paradise), BADSISTA and more for guest slots.

Floating somewhere between a hybrid Latin-sound, Ilian Tape-techno and deep UK club, ALBIN is a DJ ready to tell his story through the sounds of his home and outer-space, turning in recent mixes for NTS Radio, Rinse FM, Index Records and has recently played in Dimensions Festival in Tisno, Razzmatazz in Barcelona, La Rotonde Stalingrad in Paris, among others.

The don of Siberian techno Roma Zuckerman made his debut double LP ‘Phenomenon of Provincial Mentality’ on Gost Zvuk with a much-anticipated showcase of his remarkably diverse language of sound, from quickfire DJ tools to off-kilter extrapolations with a full stylistic diversity in between.
Working through the archive, the label assembled a collection of hypnotic loops in the vein of early Robert Hood and click-and-cut experiments that recall the punk attitude of Berlin's Elektro Music Department, all the while with nods towards European minimal. The album opens with two subdued, speak-and-spell processed vocal jams before 'Text Regulator' brings things into overdrive with furious drum programming and wide-eyed glitch FX. Over to Side B things take a turn into something more melodic and relaxing, an almost BBC radiophonic workshop zone with synthetic underwater sounds bringing to mind Amadeo Tomassi's library soundtracks of the late 70s. Think of early sonic portrayals of deep space exploration or the ocean's vastness mixed with repetitive 909 stabs.

‘I Play Everyday’ strikes as one of the album's highlights, a prime example of Zuckerman’s fascination with creating loop-based grooves to get lost in. There’s a hint of Richard H. Kirk’s 90s IDM classic ‘Freezone’ in the timbre of the opening moments, but where Kirk goes into sample-heavy cross-cultural futurism, ‘I Play Everyday’ seems acutely concerned with subtle reductions. ‘Extra Work’ harnesses a kind of pounding warehouse gabber energy with what sounds like a collage of shortwave radio voices, whereas album closer ‘Companeros’ brings in snippets of traditional Spanish-style acoustic guitar, albeit layered in a concrete manner with bursts of electrical distortion. It makes for one of the LP’s most surprising moments, but all round ‘Phenomenon of Provincial Mentality’ shows an artist working with a vast variety of styles. A truly great body of work to kick off the year
