The impressively consistent @burninmusic is the work of France-born, London-based hustler @pegasvs. Lovingly curated and accompanied by high-quality artwork, their releases have made their way into the boxes of some of the most respected names in the scene, and his own output on the label has impressed more with each release. He's packed his mix full of unreleased exclusives, from deep to acid to broken beat - one of which we've picked up to release on Monologues Records later this year...

*How would you describe your sound?*

I make raw, club-ready house music. The values I try to convey through my sound are freedom, rhythm and craft.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

I am inspired by a few key figures in house music: Kerri Chandler, Larry Heard, Ron Trent. Those people influence my sound but I am also influenced by my own experiences: going out clubbing, my daily life in London, running a record label, being a dad... ll those experiences shape my music. I believe that, whether you like it or not, our surroundings, friends, education....  everything we go through on a day-to-day basis as humans, this go straight in the big pot of Creativity. It is part of our output. Consciously or not...

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

For  the first time, thanks to this mix, I had to go through my past projects. I spent quite a long time listening back to almost all finished projects in my hard drive and chose the ones that meant something to me. It's been a wonderful process and I am really happy with the result. Big thanks to Ben for inviting me to record that mix.

Luca Vera (The Dub Records), Italian DJ and producer, comes to life in the late seventies in a small city between Rome and Naples. He starts tasting music during his childhood in the eighties and quickly acquires a strong passion for the Italian disco. He reaches his musical maturity during the nineties with the explosion of house music for which he starts living. That love becomes so strong that it makes him want to experience the thrill of the decks. This passion lives and persists for over twenty years now and maintains his mood in a continuum of emotions that lead him to face every experience as if it was his first time.

After years on stage, he plunges into the world of production in order to approach music in a more profound way which pushes him always to experiment and try something new that differentiates his sonority. The desire to pursue novelty and uniqueness and to search for creation in hidden corners of music completes his growth and musical maturity, making him a complete artist with proper knowledge that he skillfully applies to face the reality of this world as a veteran while still keeping the desire for discovery of a child.

Machinegewehr is the alter ego of Silas Schletterer. He is a Rotterdam-based contemporary artist who makes music in his spare time. His musical path started when he became the singer in his first Punk Rock band “No Idea” (which later changed into “Nice Guy Eddie”) at the age of 15. Later, he played bass guitar in several other bands like H.O.T.T. and Viper Cobra. Around the year 2000, he started making music on his computer using Fruity Loops. Inspired by artists like Ladytron, Adult, Vitalic, Miss Kittin and The Hacker, this was a perfect cross over to electronic music.

Through the years the breadth of his musical interest grew bigger. Taking his music more serious step by step, he kept developing his sound. In 2008 he released a 6-track CD named “Part of the test”, followed up by “The Destroyer” in 2009. Both mini albums with a mix of electro(rock) bangers and Italo influenced tracks, some containing samples from 80’s movies /documentaries and guitar, bass and vocals by himself.

In 2013 Machinegewehr was finally picked up by the vital Dutch label Bordello a Parigi. “Abhinanda”, a track with vocals by Gees Voorhees, was his first 12-inch release on Bordello, along with a remix of “Abhinanda” by Elitechnique and a rework by A Visitor From Another Meaning (Alden Tyrell) with vocals by Italo legend Fred Ventura. The EP was described by some critics as a perfect debut release, while DJ Mag wrote: “A brilliant update of ’80s Italo, with its combination of foreboding pulses, spine-tingling synth melodies and a frost Euro vixen delivering unforgettable lines like ‘the afterglow is burning in my eyes'”. “Carradine”, his second release on Bordello (with the album cover art done by Silas himself), was also well received and named a perfect successor.

Five more EP’s followed since then: The Unforgiven, 2015 (Electronic Emergencies), Venom, 2017 (Nocta Numerica), The Cordyceps, 2017 (Bordello a Parigi), Work it (with Ayden Vice), 2018 (Musique Exotique) and Kurayami, 2019 (Electronic Emergencies). Lots of remixes by Machinegewehr were also released by labels like Bordello, Nein Records, Esthétique, Electronic Emergencies and Correspondant Music. Right now, “Machine” is working on a new project with Manni Blitzer. Several remixes will also come out this year and a new solo EP is expected in late 2020.

We're really excited to welcome @modern-house-quintet to the podcast. The Parisian duo have been putting out some superb freewheeling analog jams in recent times, focusing on slow-burning grooves and melodic improvisation (see also some lush sounds under their Cyclades moniker). Their wonderful mix for us is almost entirely comprised of unreleased material, all made by their own fair hands as is the Monologues Podcast way.

*How would you describe your sound?*

It’s always a tricky question. I would say that I try to do different things every time. A concrete example : the new release (CYC 003) contains five tracks which are quite unalike : one is a piano and guitar "housy" piece. The other is more dub-techno oriented. The third one has a more delicate house feeling, whereas the next one has a breakbeat-jungle vibe. The final one is kind of a vibraphonic interlude.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Lots of immense jazz musicians : Milt Jackson, Red Garland, Kenny Drew, Tommy Flanagan, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, Clifford Brown, Kenny Clarke. 

Within the electronic scene : Lars Bartkhun, Basic Channel, Mike Grant, Omar S, Anthony Nicholson, Ron Trent, Volcov. Outside the electronic scene : Steve Reich and Philip Glass. On a different perspective, there is also the work of the dubplates & mastering engineers: Helmut Erler, Christoph Grote-Beverborg or Rashad Becker. The lacquering/cutting process has always been fascinating to me. It’s not an "influence" strictly speaking, obviously, but their work is impressive and it is inspiring somehow, yes. 

There are also soundtracks and movies, of course : as such, the italian TV show "Gomorra" is a wonder ("Suburra" as well by the way). The guys from Mokadelic did an incredible work. And I really like Eric Rohmer's movies, even though there is little music in them. All these things have, one way or another, an influence. 

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

The mix gathers strictly unreleased productions and one song previously released in 2018, on the Modern House Quintet label. I tried to do something varied, quite heterogenous so that the listener - and me - cannot be bored. Therefore, some songs are more techno, some have a sort of an ethereal atmosphere whereas others have a more "housy" feeling. Some are sketches whereas others are more "completed". About the tracklisting, I simply wrote "unreleased" with a short indication next to it, merely because I don’t have an accurate title yet, haha.
