It's the middle of August, the height of summer here in the UK... and for a change, we're not moaning about the weather (although we're still talking about it). To accompany the hazy afternoons spent dreaming of being by a Balearic poolside, we have the perfect soundtrack, albeit from a slightly unconventional source: the Michigan magician John Beltran. EPM Podcast 168 – comes from Petals in Sound (Louise Baldwin). The Liverpool-based producer and DJ has been making a name for herself in the underground house music scene for the past few years, crafting a unique sound which blends hazy, jazzy house music with deep, atmospheric electronic textures. Here we find Louise continuing her commitment to deep and atmospheric house with a mix that brings in tracks from Idan Hana, Cinthie, Bernardo Mota, Moonee, Taren Gopi, Roy Ford, Polytunnel, an exclusive from Louise’s own Petals In Sound and more.

Louise’s vast taste in music plays a huge part in the way her productions play out to the listener, as she draws influence from her love of disco, house and acid combined with guitar-focused genres such as shoegaze. She cites Daniel Avery as a big influence as well as the likes of Space Ghost and Retromigration.

Petals In Sound’s catalogue includes releases with well-respected labels such as Closer to Truth and she is a mainstay on Berlin’s Dirt Crew Recordings, having worked with a diverse roster of remixers from the likes of Bruise, Henrik Villard, Kaysoul, and Glassjaw frontman Daryl Palumbo. 

Petals In Sound’ music has gained support from Deeper Shades of House, NTS Radio, Rinse FM and the Sloth Boogie Radio Show, and her recent Dial Tone EP received critical acclaim in Chicago’s 5 magazine.

Her DJ mix for EPM includes a brand new, soon to be released Petals’ track titled ‘Furusato’ (Mole Music). This track showcases once more her attention to detail in terms of arrangement, creating depth and interest with luscious pads and intricate melodies against a backdrop of beautiful lush house textures.

Rotterdam’s Danou P (@danou-possel) has been one of our favourite producers this year, releasing a slew of standout tracks both solo and alongside his studio partner, Chicago star Jamie 3:26. With a knack for exquisite melody and infectious grooves, his music is imbued with warmth and a discernible human touch. If he keeps going like this he’ll go far. This mix features some exclusive unreleased bizness, various jazzy workouts and his piano house stomper ‘The Good Old Days (Are Now)’—one of our favourites of 2023.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I was trained as a keyboardist and later started producing. Therefore I tend to play and record a lot myself instead of relying on samples. I love ‘90s Deep House and I’m a sucker for those old school sounds. I think you can describe my sound best as Deep House influenced by the golden era of the genre, but made by a musician/keyboardist with a modern touch. Having said that I love to go down different roads like more Disco, Italo and electro sounding stuff.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

I’ve always been inspired by old Funk, Boogie and Disco. There is something about the soul in it and the synthesizer sounds that will always resonate with me. As far as House goes I really like Kerri and ‘90s Deep House artists alike. Newer artists that I really admire and draw inspiration from are: Makez, Clive From Accounts, Felipe Gordon, Chaos In The CBD, COEO, I can keep going hahaha.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I had great fun doing this mix. I don’t usually play that many of my own tracks in a set and to my surprise it was actually really easy to get to 60 minutes. It was really cool to find out that some tracks fit really well together. This is something I’m definitely going to remember and use when I’m playing in the future! I tried to show very different sides of me as an artist in this mix. I played a couple of tracks from me and Jamie 3:26 including new remixes we’ve done, some older tracks that will be released in the near future and some original tracks that are out already. I also played an edit of ‘Street Player/ that I made recently. I just made that one for myself as a straight up edit and tool on the dancefloorl. I think a lot of people don’t get to that part of the song when they play it and they tend to play the most well known parts as somewhat of a crowdpleaser. But this last part is where it’s at for me! It’s a great groove and it just keeps building and going.
