American artist Dan Sieg joined Silk Royal in October 2012 with one of the most memorable opening statements in the history of our imprint: the emotive progressive trance anthem "Breaking The Illusion," released under his "Dan & Sam" moniker. Over the last few years, we have had the enormous privilege of witnessing Dan's remarkable evolution as an artist, from his uplifting and lyrically profound vocal hit "Walls" (feat. Maxx Hennard) to his deeper, more introspective remix of Toby Hedges' "Images." His journey has now reached a new plateau with the arrival of his debut artist album: "A Sense Of Wonder." The album features 10 brand new cuts, all of which display Dan's immense artistic range, as well as the sensitivity and depth of feeling that have imbued all of his work to date.

The listener's journey begins with "Iris," which fittingly opened our Silk Royal Showcase #250 live event in San Francisco. A hypnotic arpeggio and distorted background synth provide an unforgettable intro, which is soon followed by a clubby, up-tempo house groove. The title cut appears next, which centers on delicate arps, celestial synth stabs, and a techno-influenced bassline motif. The brooding and pensive "Gloom" initially paints a bleak existential picture, yet ultimately delivers a deeply moving (and hopeful) melodic theme. The fourth cut on the album, "Erko," treats fans to an infectious vocal line from Dan himself, while a progressive house groove and lush melody offer additional aural sustenance. The album's lead single, "No Way Back Up," arrives next and features the sensational Australian duo Illuminor, who have proven themselves to be a formidable threat in both the production and vocal arenas. A breakbeat rhythm eventually crescendoes into a stunning chorus by Michael Ware of Illuminor; the combination of Dan's innovative groove and Michael's poignant vocal performance is truly breathtaking.

The second half of the album begins with "Welcome To The Alley," a sun-kissed, festival-ready anthem in-the-making. The song's psychedelic bassline will tickle your brain and simultaneously compel you to dance. Next in line, "Grace" offers a club-friendly, cavernous bassline and an outer-worldly atmosphere. The subsequent cut, "Wispy," is a slow-burning, after-hours affair, with an equally evocative soundscape. The album's penultimate track, "Techbruary," represents Dan's foray into tech house; it is also reveals the lighthearted and humorous side of his personality. Finally, the trance-influenced "Horizons" brings the album to a glorious conclusion. The numerous melodic layers shine through the track like beams of light, radiating positivity, hope, and a sense of interconnectedness amongst all of us who rely on music to best illustrate the human experience.

The compilation is inspired by our weekly radio show of the same name, which is co-hosted by Jacob and Tom, as well as Johan Vilborg, Jayeson Andel, Vintage & Morelli, & Terry Da Libra. Reaching international listeners on Proton Radio, Digitally Imported, and other radio platforms, Silk Music Showcase recently reached its 400th episode (http://www.silkmusicshowcase.com) and now often ranks amongst the Top 100 Music Podcasts in the USA on iTunes.

Carefully selected to represent the sound of our radio show (and, more generally, our label), the songs included in the compilation range from the more pensive and melancholic shades of progressive to the more club-oriented, peak-hour material we tend to play at the end of our radio show mixes and live sets. Many of the artists are seasoned veterans of the SMS compilation series; there are also numerous first-time contributors to this year's compilation, many of whom have asserted themselves as leading talents in trance & progressive in just the past year.

Shannon Riches, better known as Approaching Black, caps off a prolific year of consistently indelible songwriting, courtesy of the brand new 2-track EP "You Are." This gorgeous pair of sensual and evocative tunes solidifies his place as one of the leading deep-progressive artists in our roster.

The stunning "You Are," one of the standout cuts from Jacob Henry's recent "Silk Music Showcase 06" mix, immediately establishes a gentle and lush soundscape, including an intoxicating female vocal motif. A mini-break at the quarter turn introduces a poignant piano motif, as well as catapults the listener into a more buoyant groove. Radiant pad swells and fluttering side melodies reinforce the mellifluous arrangement, which continues to subtly crescendo throughout the song's duration. Conga drums in the song's latter half evoke the relaxing and romantic sensory feast that is a beachside stroll at dusk. 

The B-side cut, "Platform 7," is no doubt a spiritual sequel to its predecessor, given its chilled and erotic hues. The "weightless" 4/4 percussion, delicate piano licks, and provocative vocal samples create a very specific lovers-at-midnight aesthetic. During the breathtaking main break, one can imagine hearing waves roll along an especially tranquil shoreline. It's a serene moment in an EP that further comforts the soul with every new (sonic) turn.

Few label newcomers have crafted a sound that so comfortably fits into the musical fabric of our imprint as rising talent Veeshy. His gorgeous soundscapes showcase deep, romantic textures and crystalline melodies, which evoke a state of reverie, if not catharsis, in the listener. We are thrilled to showcase four new cuts from the Australian composer, two of which were recently featured on our Silk Music Showcase 06 compilation.

Veeshy's EP kicks off with "Stimulate The Stars," which centers on an array of ethereal vocal stabs and profoundly lush and sensual pads. At the quarter turn, arpeggiated chords mesmerize the listener, soon followed by an equally entrancing new theme in the main breakdown. The return of the sensual bassline groove in the final stage of the song's arrangement is simply blissful.

The rapturous "Aural Ambience" introduces Veeshy signatures at every turn: a breathtaking vocal sample punctuates exceedingly deep pads and, of course, hypnotizing and mellifluous arpeggiated melodies carry the lead. The breakdown offers a meditative moment, in which the symphony of melodic sounds overtakes the listener and purges any feelings of anxiety or self-doubt.

In the deeply soothing "Evening Aesthetics," a cavernous bassline and celestial melody lines cast a dreamlike spell upon the listener. The romantic and soulful essence of this nocturnal ode further reveals itself throughout the arrangement, as angelic vocal stabs and ecstatic new melodies continue to emerge.

Veeshy's "2am" is a fitting closing track to his EP. Of all four songs on the release — a veritable journey through nocturnal soundscapes — this one proves to be the most dreamlike and evocative. A chilled groove is joined by a seductive vocal sample and mystical pads, as well as an entrancing lead melodic motif. The patient crescendo of the arrangement ultimately leads to a slightly more uptempo closing groove, in which the moody pads coalesce beautifully with the hypnotic melody lines.

Australian composer Approaching Black (a.k.a. Shannon Riches) has been a musical contributor to our label since 2009, thereby making him one of the longest-tenured artists in our ranks. His unforgettable songs -- known for their distinctively sensual and lush textures, in addition to their melodic, atmospheric, and transportive qualities -- remain cherished touchstones that have greatly helped us refine our label's emotive sound through the years, in various electronic subgenres.

We are thereby especially pleased to present Approaching Black's debut artist album, "Dusk," which is split into two parts and comprises twenty-five total songs. The first part of "Dusk" treats listeners to predominately deep and progressive house compositions, for which the Melbourne-based producer is perhaps most known. Amongst his passionate fans are fellow label veterans Shingo Nakamura, Sound Quelle, and Brandon Mignacca, all of whom have collaborated with Approaching Black on at least one album track. The chemistry between Approaching Black and all three of these phenomenal veteran talents is simply extraordinary, with Mignacca's lyrical and vocal contributions to "One Minute Longer" and "Revive" proving to be especially profound and beautiful. More than a half dozen other instrumental tracks on the first part of the album, including the mellifluous "Closer" and "Higher," equally showcase Shannon's gifts as a sonic storyteller and deft craftsman of deeper grooves.
