For this week’s podcast we bring you local London DJ, Night Garden aka James Laing.

In James’ own words:

“This mix is a reimagining of a set I played for good friends at a very special party in a field somewhere in the south of the UK. Since the very first edition, that party has been a breath of fresh air to me musically, and has helped me get close to the deeply psychedelic sound I’m looking for in my own DJing. The mix begins deep in the textured sounds of the undergrowth, gradually drifting forward, through a threshold between our reality and beyond.”

It's a mix that is dream-like to begin with, progressing into a raw emotional intensity, before softening again as we enter the beyond - surpassing physicality and thought, leaving behind the illusion of reality, with all that remains being the dance of sound waves.

James hosts his own show on local community radio station on the first Sunday of each month, for 8-10 pm. So if you like what you hear, be sure to tune in.

The collaboration between us and the Mostra festival gets a new chapter, and this one is quite special - the recording of the festival's closing set by incredibly talented Japanese artist Lynne. Throughout the festival, Mostra showcased carefully selected talent, emphasizing quality above all else. Lynne's DJ set at Mostra was a testament to her unparalleled talent and expertise. With a keen understanding of the festival's needs and the audience's energy, Lynne took us on a unique journey that left us in awe. And it wasn't an easy task for Lynne. She had to follow the exceptional 4-hour set by Patrick Russell, but she pushed the bar even higher, leaving a lasting impression that we still talk about three months later. 

As the fatigue of the four-day music marathon loomed over the crowd, she fearlessly embraced the challenge of delivering an unforgettable closing performance. Lynne's selection of powerful half-time drum&bass ignited a fiery energy within Castell Du Monjuic, transforming the atmosphere into a seething cauldron of sound. 

The recording of this set captures every electrifying moment, delivering an experience that rivals the memories we hold in our minds. Prepare to be swept away as Lynne showcases drum'n'bass 2.0, infusing it with her unique and awe-inspiring artistry.

Japanese native Maiko Okimoto, now based in Tochigi, began her musical journey in 2006 in the most unlikely of ways - as an MC for D&B DJ's in Tokyo as Key MC. Most notably, Maiko was the regular host for Makoto's infamous "Human Elements" party in Tokyo.

Following a natural progression as a recorded vocalist on productions for artists like Ena & Naibu, Maiko began to experiment with production. Maiko found her musical stride and much like fellow Japanese native and Horo label-mate ENA, a large volume of material began amassing and she has released "Ourea I" as Ourea, which is a collaboration project with Sam KDC, and her debut solo EP "Urge Theory" for Horo in 2017. 

This is not a DJ mix, it is a live performance

Reclaim Your City 312 | Pessimist (Bristol, United Kingdom)

Releasing music since 2010, Pessimist is the alias of Kristian Jabs, a Bristol-based drum & bass producer who first gained wider recognition as one-third of Ruffhouse: the Samurai Music-affiliated group responsible for giving the drum ‘n’ bass community a much-needed shake-up with their ultra-precise, ultra-dark halftime sound.

In recent years, Jabs has been more prolific as a solo artist, exploring the intersection between techno and drum ‘n’ bass that centres around razor-sharp drums, choking ambience, cavernous subs and very little else. In 2016, he found his spiritual home on the infamous Blackest Ever Black imprint – first with low-key techstep anthem Balaklava, and then with his universally acclaimed debut album, Pessimist. Ranking highly on end of year lists everywhere, the album turned heads throughout the wider dance music community, indicating the arrival of an artist with a mature, fully-formed sound, refreshingly unbridled by tempo or genre.

His mix for Reclaim Your City, was recorded live at Reconstrvct in New York on November 10th 2018, and blends noir, smoked-out dub-scape, acidic rave, and downtempo breakbeat with a bombed-out industrial ambience.
