A respected regular on Figure / Figure SPC, from his timeless creations alongside 
Dimi Angelis, to his stunning three part ‘SPC A’, or his more recent collaboration with Markus Suckut as ‘JSMS’ - the prolific techno producer Jeroen Search returns. 

Encapsulating a trademark sound built from from classic analog hardware, fused with modern production techniques, Search offers up three upfront new tracks, backed with two snaking, distinctly modern remixes by London based techno mainstay Ø [Phase].

What begins as a casual reduced jam then evolves into an ensnaring, tense workout as ‘Momentum’ gathers exactly that - elevating and maintaining the tension. ‘The Future is Ours’ then sees Search at his meanest, with a grating, killer hook winding itself around his perfectly controlled drum machines. Precision tools for the floor from one of the masters of live, party-angled Techno. The digital bonus track ‘Remains’ sees Jeroen in a more subdued zone, working a hypnotic, Millsian line over a carefully reduced drum pattern.

Token records regular and long-running producer Ø [Phase] then remixes ‘Momentum’, turning two tripping, reduced versions leading the focus towards subliminal messages and repetitive structures. Remix 1 takes the main theme and freaks it out, swimming in a glassy pool of snappy percussion, while Remix 2 allows us to get carried away on the polar winds for a more icy, chilling version.

02. Jeroen Search - The Future Is Ours

Alan’s new single on Drumcode demonstrates exactly why Alan Fitzpatrick is a powerhouse within the techno scene. ‘The Tetra’ will enrapture the dance floor from the off with it’s brooding nature and syncopated claps. It pushes forwards with glistening highs before more melodic stabs join the equation and slowly the beautiful melodic phrase partakes in this outstanding piece of work. ‘We Are Forever Young’ finishes off the single with a slow burning after hour’s vibe that will keep the clubbers nodding. The third and final track ‘1992’ takes us back and has a tougher more energetic feel to it. With crunchy drums, a melodic synth and a catchy vocal hook this record is another Alan Fitzpatrick masterpiece.

James Harcourt lands at Renaissance on an absolute tear. In just this year alone he's seen a track hammered by Tale Of Us (Beholden); released on luminary imprints such as Sincopat, Selador and Parquet and been remixed by indie-titan, Musumeci! Reach a little further back in the discography and the plaudits continue... he's clearly a producer in undeniable ascent.

Now he returns to Renaissance following a stellar debut on their Merin VA series with their first, full EP together, which is a diverse, 4-track player that pinpoints James' unique sound and meticulous production. Yet, his inspirations and influences may come as a shock, "At the time of writing the tracks I hadn't set foot in a club for nearly 4 years – even if there's the pandemic to factor!", he explains, "I just couldn't find much of the music I wanted from old-skool promo trawling, digital sites and record shops; I realised that if I wanted to create those moments I was looking for, the magic, dancefloor spark you only get at festivals, clubs and parties - that I should get on and make it myself."

So, with a clear objective, the Quartz EP was born with the dancefloor firmly in mind. Whether the peak-time power of Trust Me With Your Heart, the melodic stylings of Sister and Spellbound, or the emotive breaks of title track Quartz, James paints a musical picture that's full of power and beauty, "I was looking to fire up those moments in the witching hour when the music is enough to tip you from caving-in to raving the early hours away, eventually emerging to reality in the daylight hours!", he enthuses. 

The EP gets a further diversity-injection courtesy of Mr Morek, who brings a shimmer of indie class to Touch Me With Your Heart. "I wanted to approach writing this remix from outside the box," he says, "I set myself the task to experiment a little, yet still deliver a track that can harmoniously cross genres and fit in a wide selection of DJ sets."

Toka Mix 71: Anthon // Incl. Interview

Something of a musical savant, Argentinian maestro Martin has been honing his craft since the tender age of 15. Now signed to some incredible labels including Infinite Depth, Sinners and Steyoyoke, his deep melodies and dark sound is quickly finding favour with the global DJ elite. 

‘They Won’t Be There’ is a glorious drumwork out that just gets better and better. Melodic swells unleash the energy midway, where the track explodes into life. ‘Arritmia’ explodes from the speakers from the off. A sleepy giant to start with, it wakes up with melancholic fury and emotive rapture. Spiky synths marry orchestral pads for a wondrous late night wig-out. Equally, 

On remix duties are two artists with worldwide weight and name. Analog Context toughens up ‘Arritmia’ for the main room floor with a thunderous low end and stripped back percussive framework. Axel Haube drops a four to the floor beat and focuses on the rich tapestry of melodics for a darker late night groove.

Lunar Tide

Joris Voorn returns with another sterling release on his Green label. I Ran The Zoo is a lesson in stripped-back contrast and subtlety, with an acidic groove bleeping away over driving percussion and delicate atmospherics in its Digital Version, the tension growing with every thud of the kick drum. A dizzying breakdown raises the bar with snare rolls and dramatic pads, with the wide-open space therein soon sucked back into the void when the beat drops back in.

Meanwhile the special Analog Version harks back to Joris’ techno sound of old. The throbbing kick and bass and acid blips are set against rising, white-noise drenched synth swells and simple percussion to create something moody and tough yet teasingly pared back.

These two heads-down mixes make this release a stark contrast to some of his more melodic, riff-fuelled releases of late, once again demonstrating Joris' endless versatility and shape-shifting abilities.

After solemnly closing out the SPC-series in 2016, Jeroen Search hands in his second EP of the year for Figure. Carrying his signature style, these tunes embody the live-recording feel he is known for, perfectly executed and arranged in clean-cut layers.

Both tracks on the A-side feature big and beefy beats, their generous sub-range creating ample space for the juxtaposing elements to effectively slice through, whether it be the penetrating bleeps of ‘Deduced’ or the piercing rides on ‘Interval’.

Things get bumpy on the flip when the rugged but undeniable groove of ‘Steady Pulse’ firmly stands its ground against repeated onslaughts of flailing percussion. The jolty rhythms and tinkling loops of ‘Endless Circles’ may seem like it being the odd one out, but unexpectedly merge into an intricate mesh of sounds, making for a most memorable closer to this jam-packed EP.

Following last year's soul-stirring 'Incandesence' EP, Sly Faux slinks back into the MOOD camp with three more startling technoir escapades.

Goosebumps set to shudder: from the moment the palpitating sub and kick pattern of 'Dandellion' blooms into life, a fully immersive tale unfolds. The ghostly yearns, Rahmondau's harmonically layered, melancholic vocals, the cosmic textures, the overall rising sense of tension, the overwhelming low end… The young Australian talent is playing with some very fine alchemy right here.

'This Made You' flips for a much more visceral experience. Pounding tribal drums, ricocheting percussion and an abyssal drop into black hole bliss give no hint of the evocative cathedralic arpeggio that emerges midway. Gradually, some might even say slyly, Faux enshrouds us in a mystical hook that twists and turns, alluring our imagination with it. Once again, it's another mesmerising trip.

Finally MOOD mainstay and respected Spanish sonic craftsman Marino Canal closes the show with a fittingly beautiful remix. Subverting the lead and running it through his own maze of questions, answers and heavy emotions, it maintains the original's spiritual charm while adding its own narrative.

Overt techno mysticism at its finest, delivered just when we need it. We expect Sly Faux will be prowling back into the MOOD camp very soon again…
