Recently, Moog had the honor of sitting down with Nine Inch Nails’  Trent Reznor, the genre-defining music innovator, master synthesist and Academy Award winning composer. In the interview, Reznor recounts his intimate relationship with the Minimoog Voyager, which he feels “is the archetype of what a synthesizer is and should be.” Through personal stories, Reznor reveals his decades long history with the instrument and how it has shaped the way he views and creates music. 

The video is set to an original score by British electronic music producer, The Haxan Cloak, co-producer of Bjork’s Vulnicura.. Befitting the occasion, the artist used a Minimoog Voyager and a prototype Mother-32, Moog’s newest synthesizer, to create the score. 

"I made the track in a unique way that I never have before.

I have had modular synths for a long time, and consistently produced music with them, but purposefully never had a ‘keyboard-based’ setup because of not wanting to treat them in such a ‘traditional’ manner (purely for reasons of self-limitation).

Having the Voyager allowed me to utilize a more responsive approach of seeing the picture and essentially ‘playing’ along to it. I then took those results and used them to modulate other parameters and processed them further. The Mother 32 was used extensively as a sound source alongside also.

The Voyager is a synth I have always been fascinated by, but unfortunately never had the opportunity to own. I knew people that had them, but my first physical encounter was actually on the recent Bjork tour.  I used it for a lot for recreating basslines from her back catalogue, which it did effortlessly.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th May) Roly Porter takes charge of Hr 1 this week. He began his career as part of Vex’d alongside Kuedo, releasing two albums, Degenerate and Cloud Seed, both on Planet Mu, along with several singles on Bristol’s Subtext imprint. He later returned to Subtext under his own name to begin a solo project, releasing 'Aftertime' and 'Life Cycle of a Massive Star'. Earlier this year he released Third Law on TriAngle and 2 tracks from the album feature in his mix alongside music from Surgeon, Kowton, Amnesia Scanner, Yearning Kru and Aisha Devi.

From the very first track, it’s clear that Abby @Echiverri’s debut, the “Ab Initio” EP is something different and rare: a polished and fresh interpretation of electronic music that incorporates classic electro squelches with intricate broken beats and expansive synthesizer zone-outs. Although this is her first EP, Abby has extensive history as a musician, sound engineer, DJ and VJ. Her current trajectory started early in childhood when she was classically trained in violin, flute, piano and vocals, cementing music as a part of her daily life. In high school she picked up turntables and began collecting records, eventually moving to NYC to study recording engineering and perform in post-punk bands, and became a regular at Wierd and The Bunker at a very young age. Since then, Echiverri has devoted her professional hours to engineering, maintaining, and manufacturing audio equipment for studios and clubs around the world.

This record’s name “Ab Initio” means “from the beginning” or “from first principles”, invoking a propulsive leap into the future and also perhaps including an element of the eponymous. When we asked her to tell us more about the process of creating these hardware-based jams, Abby explained: “It all stems from my own experiences on the dancefloor and wanting to recreate that for other people.  I want to make music that rewires the brain: music that is challenging, yet groovy... repetitive, yet evolving.  An aural psychedelic.  It's a lofty goal - I'm still working on it.” If Ab Initio is one of her first steps towards that goal then we can’t wait to see what happens next.

Monnom Black will mark its 17th release with its first various artist compilation presented on triple vinyl. Keeping with the label’s modus operandi, the compilation is packed with iconic, raw and uncompromising techno, featuring 13 artists new and old to the imprint, including a re-release of a classic Drax aka Thomas P. Heckmann track from 1993.

To coincide with the launch of the compilation, Monnom Black will hold its first highly-anticipated label party. Locking arms with the notorious underground Dutch promoters Reaktor, known for their challenging events and pushing the boundaries of what techno has to offer. Together they will celebrate with an electronic onslaught on New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam’s Elementstraat Warehouse. A location cut to the bone that perfectly encapsulates the label and promoters combined vision and ethos.

Dax J curates the night fusing the label together for a special moment in time, with the titan warehouse opening up two of its rooms hosting a monster line up with the likes of CJ Bolland, Regis as CUB, Thomas P.
