This was at the peak of the night in the enormous main room, so the mix is representative of that. In other words, its quite banging!

MIXED EMOTIONS 15 years later. 

A long time ago, in another lifetime, i had a big nightclub in Montreal called Sona, and i djed at that night club every friday night from 3-7am….
it was about a hundred times less glamorous than it sounds. yes i was an owner and a dj but i was also playing techno to a big room that mostly wanted house, and i had already had my glory years as a young rave dj, and all in all i was starting to wonder where it was all heading. Musically i was playing less and less inspiring music to less and less inspired people, myself included. Inspiration has a cycle to it, and around 99 i was at a low point. But slowly in the background , gaining momentum….there was a new sound creeping in (as is always the case, you have to listen very carefully to hear it) ….. those strange records you secretly love, but for some reason feel afraid of playing. they feel too weird, or too challenging, so you put them on a tape…. or you listen in the car, building up a whole fantasy of how glorious the world would be if you could just play THOSE tracks.The tracks i was slowly building up could be loosely called electro. Not the classics really, not straight 808 or Miami bass,  but a new strain with a heavy 80’s influence…. Dutch records from emerging masters like I-F, and german ones introducing Kraftwerk inspired kids like Anthony Rother: crucially a generation of techno and house kids looking for something more. they were small records, B-sides, delicate, hand picked. I felt nobody cared…. but i was in love. 

Turns out it was my turn to do a mixcd, which was a big deal at the time, at least for me. Because i owned the label, and the club, i could indulge in the classic textbook indulgment move: a DOUBLE album. i wanted to hedge my bets. I also wanted to introduce myself to the world. CD1, since forgotten to history, was the sound of what i was playing at Sona at the time…..good techno, early Swedish stuff, some classic bombs, solid late 90’s techno. it was “good”. i’d give it a solid 7 on 10. at best. 

But the second CD….. this was my baby, my labor of love, my manifesto….. i took all those special records i had been saving, and put them together. hiding in the musical shadow of the “safer” mainroom CD, i did what you should always do anyway— i just played what i truly adored. 

i called the second disk “electro-funk” and the whole package was called MIXED EMOTIONS, a reflection of my state of mind at the time (at a key moment in the artwork process, i heard Michael Douglas prophetically say ”mixed emotions” in a movie, sealing the deal). I was really happy with the results, which even included some very basic stabs at production (an intro)…

Following on from their Record Store Day ‘Looped EP’ release, which featured remixes by Dauwd and Lubomyr Melnyk, Kiasmos – made up of Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – return with three new tracks and a remix by Tale Of Us.

Recorded in various locations including Reykjavík and Berlin, the EP opens with ‘Drawn’, a four-minute percussion fuelled track with gentle piano motifs. ‘Gaunt’ features the addition of ambient synths and a drum loop, underpinned by slow-moving chords. Title track ‘Swept’ which the duo offered to fans as a surprise gift in form of a free download card at previous show dates, showcases a more club-oriented beat structure alongside Kiasmos’ signature emotive instrumentation. 
 
Closing the EP is a remix from Berlin-based duo Tale of Us who met Kiasmos in London and twist the original downbeat title track
into their distinctively dark aesthetic. Pulsating hats and a driving bass loop add pace as the track builds toward an epic breakdown.

The ‘Swept EP’ will be released on 12”/DL via Erased Tapes on November 20th, 2015.

HVOB have only just released their impressive debut album, but the next EP is already on the way: "Always Like This" is almost a tribute to the Vienna-based electronic duo's current wave of success.
Number 1 in the iTunes Dance Charts in Austria and number 3 in Germany, number 3 in the Beatport Deep House Charts – and HVOB's eponymous debut album continues to win the band critical acclaim in a success story which began when the first snippets appeared on Soundcloud a year ago. HVOB's Berlin-based label Stil vor Talent, which is no stranger to success, has been delighted by one of its best selling albums to date.
HVOB's third EP is scheduled for release on April 26 – and the track selection seems to be more than mere coincidence. "Always Like This" is an accurate reflection of the young Vienna electro duo's life right now. Anna Müller and Paul Wallner are "super happy" with the way things are going, busy as they are with all the live appearances in cities like Berlin, Paris and Istanbul, long nights spent in the studio and the formation of new partnerships: alongside Four Artists, Primary Talent, one of the world's major booking agencies, will in future be looking after the interests of HVOB.
"Always Like This" is the third single from the album "HVOB". HVOB's cover of the track by British indie rock band Bombay Bicycle Club mixes warm synth pads with soft beats, while Anna Müller's distinctive voice puts an entirely new spin on the melancholy of the original. Oliver Koletzki and Andhim have both made remixes of HVOB's interpretation of "Always Like This": Oliver Koletzki's version is powerful, emotive and melodic, while Andhim's shows incredible attention to detail and is intensely deep and original.
HVOB, which stands for "Her Voice Over Boys", are Anna Müller and Paul Wallner, who formed the duo in spring 2012. Müller (composition, production, vocals) and Wallner (composition and final production) produce intelligent, sophisticated electronic music, which is both easy to listen or dance to. The Vienna duo, who favour live on-stage performances with the backing of a drummer, will be appearing at the Donaufestival in Krems, Lower Austria, the Lighthouse Festival on the Lanterna peninsula (Porec, Croatia), the Pratersauna in Vienna, the Übel & Gefährlich in Hamburg and the Ninkasi in Lyon.
