Futureboogie Recordings is calling time after ten years with a 20-track compilation that sums up the sound of the lovingly curated Bristol label. From throbbing arps and noirish guitar twangs to errant analogue blips and ceaseless, rolling grooves, it’s a different sound to what you might have heard five years back on the Summer Riot IV compilation, and certainly a long way from the early days. Consider Futureboogie 10² an ode to evolution as much as a toast to all the great tracks and the family of artists that have passed through the wide-reaching Futureboogie sphere since before the label was even a sparkle in the disco ball.

When Futureboogie Recordings launched in 2011 with Julio Bashmore and Javeon McCarthy’s ‘Father Father’, it represented an extended circle of friends close to the label from Bristol’s deep pool of talent and beyond – amongst them Eats Everything, Waifs & Strays, PBR Streetgang, Behling & Simpson and Crazy P. The reach of the label grew in tandem with its reputation, not to mention the endeavours of the team in other areas of the music game. The Boogiefuturo label became a vital entity on its own terms, carrying a lauded DJ Nature remix of Typesun which encapsulates two distinct generations of Bristolian house music at its best. DJ Nature, who cut his teeth as DJ Milo in the Wild Bunch days, has gone on to become a regular feature on Futureboogie, helping define its soulful, adventurous spirit.

It’s also hard to separate Futureboogie from Team Love – events specialists who share some of the same management. From their flagship Love International festival in Croatia (having steered The Garden before that) to the Love Saves The Day weekend in Bristol, the Silver Hayes dance area of Glastonbury to the Waterworks festival with Percolate in London, you can see the unmistakable Futureboogie stamp across an international spread of events now. 

Sonically, Futureboogie shifted its direction at the halfway point with Fernando’s Mid Decade EP. Artists like Mark E, Felix Dickinson, Kiwi, Lauer, Ponty Mython, Ruf Dug and Toby Tobias are of course still intuitively connected with the foundations of disco and funk, but their sound teases at the edges to shape out a more inquisitive strain of house. The remixers passing through the label at this time speak volumes as well – the late, great Andrew Weatherall, Roman Flügel, I:Cube and Ivan Smagghe amongst them, every one an iconoclast within the strictures of club music.

So we come to Futureboogie 2021, which lands in the wake of a sterling run of 12”s from breakthrough names like Theus Mago, Zakmina, Chez de Milo and Warehouse Preservation Society. Across 20 tracks, this expansive collection celebrates the same omnivorous love of grooves which Futureboogie embodied before it even had a name. There’s a moodier, freakier strain to the sound across the compilation, but the tradition of warm, snagging party starters holds true. It’s a triumphant note to end on. But one has to ask, why, and what comes next?

Beautiful landscapes stretched out before her eyes; glistening waters to the left and trees in shades of auburn and brown to the right. The scenery was a feast for the senses, a refreshing escape from the city lights she'd become so accustomed to. For miles and miles little life could be seen; it was silent, calming even. The surroundings stimulated her mind, offering her space and time to think — or simply to dream the day away.

Ransom Note Records present new signing Natasha Bai, with her debut EP ‘Transsib’; an oneiric voyage through the world of the Russian DJ, musician, producer and vocalist. The title is short for the ‘Trans-Siberian Railway’, a 9000 km of railroad that connects Moscow with Vladivostok on the Russian Far East. "The building of the Transsib Railway helped the founding of my hometown many years ago; Novosibirsk", Natasha explains. "It’s 50 hours by train from Novosibirsk to Moscow and during this time little life happens.”

Sonically the four-track EP blends genres and imaginary worlds, from proggy trance to bright electro, euphoric acid and ambient pop; the latter taking cues from Natasha's production alter-ego Altai Princess. Today's premiere is opening track ‘Romantiko’ which welcomes skitty beats alongside poppy vocal snippets and electro kicks; engaging sonic distortion and synth melodies — "like a bright sunny morning when you wake up happy.”

Natasha cites the release as a symbol of growth, of “moving through life and moving towards your dreams. From my hometown to the city of my dreams, from my first steps in music to my first EP, from childhood through youth to adulthood. It’s a never-ending journey."

Dima K returns with a new EP. After a 2-year break. Dima completely changed the concept of his music. Here is also a melancholic warmth. Without exaggeration - this is the main deep house work of this season. Dima has long gone beyond any genre framework. We can only say that this is definitely house music, but the combination and aesthetics of classical techniques coexist with new technologies. "Rich and Beauty" - this is the very essence of winter hope for the return of warmth with a pronounced bass line and an almost summer live guitar combined with incomparable analog synthesizers. "Music and Cars" - this is a road movie, a song to which you are "riding" in the literal and figurative sense - that is how this story draws in. There is a wonderful remix by Marco Lazovic on the record, which gives a complete reinterpretation of the original track, adding some special nuances and touches with fancy patterns. "Money makes me lazy" has an amazing groove reminiscent of the deep house wave of the early 90s. Impeccable work, enjoy my friends!

Exclusive Kito Jempere - A King Of Comets (Samo DJ Remix)

It was November 2020 when Kito Jempere first released his Yet Another Kito Jempere Album - and the album not only marked a peak in his musical output as well as being but it was also peak of the second covid wave with artists mainly releasing music they had worked on during the first lockdown. Now, one and a half years later, Kito closes this album chapter with a deluxe version of it including the original tracks and remixes plus a whole lot of yet unreleased remixes that will see the light of day for the first time. Amongst those gems is also Samo DJ’s remix of A King Of Comets and the Stockholm producer definitely gives the track his twist. With release on Public Possession or his very own label Born Free Records, with artists like Baba Stiltz or with projects like KWC 92, the Swedish House-maestro has not only a reputation of delivering a unique sound but implemented it throughout the years in the scene. His approach to Kito’s A King Of Comets therefore is no exception and comes in with rather housey and few 8bit-sounds adding an old-school analogue flavor to it. As most Samo DJ-productions A King Of Comets combines or plays with its texture of Scandinavian dark-vibes and minimalistic yet advanced sounds that entwine each other and culminate in an unagitated classy composition that has it all. The almost break-esque implementation of vocals, the repetitive claps and scratches in the second part of the track though add unforeseeable nuances to the remix as well as a kind of laidback coolness one can only witness in the Northern hemisphere.

A series of cassette variations in the turmoil of the days is opened by a collective improvement of high-class Russian craftsmen — VA Spazio Invasore Vol. 1.
The tape custom is fully equipped with collective images in the spirit of its time. Two sides come together: day and night, light and twilight. The rhythmic in-depth intro sets the pace with a touch of space disco, which is periodically warmed up by retrospective Indian chants.

A more dense continuation falls into the rut of modernity with airy synthesizer additives. As soon as the first side crosses the equator, acid projections mixed with Italian classics and a little whimsical freshness of new disco immediately begin to sound with bright inclusions.
The clever alternate combination of the same elements with the addition of high energy switches to the B side, demonstrating a bold modern look at production. Next, a color of intensity appears with a hint of Depeche Mod and Sovietwave, giving way to trance non-trivial indie dance, and then again going into the mysterious haze of acidity.

Another debut record on LBF is coming from Saint Petersburg habitant — Pasha Mikheev aka Cable Toy. Former game soundtracks and ad music maker, he found himself attending dance parties more frequently in recent years, and eventually making dance music himself. After some time he started throwing parties at Tancploshadka club in Saint P, touring around Russia and quite often playing at Denis Simachev Shop & Bar, so it makes perfect sense that his first record appears on the affiliated label. First tune here is a peak-time banger with an Acidic feel featuring a vocal hook from Kirill Ivanov, frontman of a Russian indie pop band SBP4, followed by a huge percussive hypno jam on A2. B-side offers two versions of a tune made in a collaboration with Lipelis, one of the label heads, and it's up to you to decide which way are you going - deeper Italo-house journey with the first version, or ravey, breakbeat territories of the second one.
