EKPHRÖN

Amoureux des musiques indie des années 60 à aujourd’hui, High Tone a toujours su digérer un panorama musicale varié autant que les éléments technologiques clés de chacune de ces décennies : guitare wah des 70’s, synthès des 80’s, turntablism et sampler des 90’s et logiciels électro des années 2000. Parce que dépasser le cadre du style pour ne parler que de musique a toujours été leur seul credo.

Le groupe a souvent alterné la typologie de ses disques entre expérimentation et maturation. Les 1ers opus étaient spontanés, sans recherche de maîtrise particulière, magmatiques, quand Wave Digger ou Out Back étaient des albums de changements. Le présent album, s’inscrit dans la continuité du No border, le deuxième CD d’Out Back.

Le thème premier d’Ekphrön est le voyage. Au départ pensé comme celui, géographique, dont est empreint leur musique, le voyage est passé du macrocosme au microcosme, pour se focaliser sur l’expérience intérieure dont l’opus porte le nom. Que se passe-t-il lorsqu’on ferme les yeux ? Littéralement du grec hors d’esprit, le titre renvoie à la transe que peut procurer la musique, ce moment de perte des sens communs, le point de rupture, le décrochage de la réalité, l’oubli de soi.

Bien sûr le voyage « physique » est toujours présent en filigrane. Musiques anciennes, archaïques, traditionnelles, spirituelles, fusionnées avec l’urbain, le béton, l’électronique comme une tentative d’harmonisation du monde.

Les invités eux-mêmes – exclusivement des amis - sont à l’image de ce cosmopolitisme. Vincent Segal, moitié de Bumcello, violoncelliste de renommée internationale (il joue régulièrement avec Blackalicious, entre autre) est le premier featuring instrumental du groupe ! On retrouve également le rappeur américain Oddateee avec lequel High Tone avait déjà collaboré sur Out Back et Fool, ainsi que Shanti D sur le single. Un titre déroutant pour qui n’aurait pas assimilé les quelques lignes écrites plus haut.

Mais il en va ainsi avec ce groupe : tour à tour surprenant ou confortant, il ne délivrera jamais aucun message noir sur blanc.

Beam Up AKA DJ Delay AKA Brian May is a prolific producer and multi-instrumentalist, originally from the UK, now residing in Germany via Australia and Japan.  Recent 7”s co-released with One-Drop Berlin and several remixes (notably a Sizzla dub rocked repeatedly by Rodigan) set the stage for his wicked debut on ZamZam, showcasing two of the many sides of Beam Up.

Zweimal Steppers is a heavy and heady journey into propulsive 4/4 dubwise with syncopated percussion, swirling keys (courtesy of Frenchman Dubble Dubble), and sonic trompe l’oeil lurking around every corner.  The bright, shimmering surface rides a massive bass undertow like sparkling waves over a bottomless ocean trench. May goes hard on the tape delay and reels out the reverbs in truly masterful style and fashion.  

Higher Level is a next-genre unto itself, a wicked missive from an under-repped area of dub & reggae history.  Part futurism, part homage, the bass and kick usher in a sic-fi take on The Clash (with shades of The Police, and a double-time riddim reminiscent of The English Beat’s finer moments).  The guitar, played by Australian collaborator Joelistics, is a 1966 Fender Telecaster - Joe Strummer’s favorite - hence the brilliant revive feel.  Electric bass and trumpet by May round out a high-stepping future 2Tone rocker guaranteed to wheel at your next Punky Reggae Party.

Dubdadda, throughout the reggae world more commonly known as Jono, is the founding member of the renowned Community Charge and main vocalist of the British Zion Train ensemble. His previously released ‘Lo-Fi Pon De Hi-Fi’ out on Moonshine Recordings is one of
the albums that continues to have a big impact on us. 

After presenting this great piece of dub history on our imprint, we’re proud to announce that we’re housing two ground shaking remixes from our hefty imprint familiars Radikal Guru and Zion Train. These reworks show off Dubdadda‘s original sound with additional forwardthinking, dubwise flavours. 

Radikal Guru’ strikes the right chord with his version of ‘Got To Be A Warrior’ through dub-esque melodica, a soulful ballad dedicated to Jah and deeply rooted sub pulses. The endowing parts of Dubdadda’s original cut are unbroken and maintained, allowing the Polish producer to extra shine light on this historical piece of dub music. The peaceful message being looped without intermissions will remind listeners of the producers’ commitment to untouchable sound system music. 

Zion Train’s interpretation on the B-side follows a similar drum pattern that ends in a completely refreshing avenue of dub.
The British ensemble nails their version
by carrying out easing reggae chords, gentle delay FX and an excursion through bassline meditation. The lovegiving chant forms the centerpiece of this relaxing stepper, which pays homage to Dubdadda’s original tale. Re-joining Zion Train’s vocal section makes the band’s
version a positive force to be reckoned with that breaths ‘soul for sound’. 

‘MS019' follows up on the Junior Dread remixes from Gorgon Sound and DJ Madd. This follow-up is packed with welcoming vibrations that feed you with dub history. Babylon Falling is the launching mixtape and soundtrack of this new project, One Blood Records, an online record shop focused in Reggae Roots and Digital.

In this mixtape we go back to the Jamaica of the 80s were the new technologies just landed in the island and hit Reggae Music with it's drum machines and synthesizers. It made possible that new producers joined the business as the need of musicians to record "real" instruments in a proper studio would end.

As Frederick R Dannaway says in his article for the "Red Bull Music Academy Daily" the new technologies democratized the music production as producers with less resources could make riddims from their tiny bedrooms.

All that gave way to a new style called "Digital Reggae", characterised by its sharp drums and its melodies coming from retro synthesizers that still to this day, although with a renovated sound, remain present in the Reggae scene.

This mixtape then, focuses on the transition from the Roots to the Digital of the first half of the 80s, the style also known as "Digi-Roots", and on the Digital from the second half of the 80s.

Babylon Falling es la mixtape que inaugura y pone banda sonora a este nuevo proyecto, One Blood Records, tienda online de vinilos especializada en Reggae Roots y Digital.

En esta mixtape viajamos a la Jamaica de los 80 donde la llegada de las nuevas tecnologías a la isla golpeó al Reggae con sus cajas de ritmos y sus sintetizadores. Esto hizo posible que nuevos productores entraran al juego ya que la necesidad de tener un estudio como tal y tener que contar con músicos para grabar instrumentos "reales" se acabaría.

Como dice Frederick R Dannaway en su articulo para la "Red Bull Music Academy Daily" las nuevas tecnologías democratizaron la producción musical ya que productores con menos recursos podían crear riddims desde sus pequeñas habitaciones.

Esto dio pie a un nuevo estilo, el "Digital Reggae" caracterizado por baterías afiladas y melodías provenientes de sintetizadores ochenteros que aún hoy en día, aunque con un sonido renovado, sigue estando presente.

Esta mixtape pues, se centra en la transición del Roots Reggae al Digital de la primera mitad de los 80, denominado también como "Digi-Roots", y en el Digital de la segunda mitad de los 80.
