I wrote this reggae-inspired song a long, long time ago when I was playing with some guys in Boston. This was back when reggae was infusing rock music all over the globe--The Clash, The Police, etc., and it also really got under my skin. We never got the chance to play it or rehearse it back in Boston, since the need to make a living had us all going our separate ways--me out to Madison, Wisconsin. Fast forward a couple decades, and I was teaching the cool reggae riff to my son Andrew. When we decided to form Penelope's Thrill, I knew I wanted to record it, but there was just one problem--I'd completely forgotten the lyrics, except for the title and first line. So I wrote entirely new lyrics.

Sweet little Judy's all alone tonight.
No one comes and no one calls.
She leaves the light on till late at night,
reading novels in her bed.

Sweet little Judy's never one to fight.
Her mother's somewhere in L.A.
She hears the trolleys rumble by at night,

but Judy's not the same.

Sweet little Judy gets to work on time.
Sharpens pencils at her desk.

June 2018: Just re-mixed and remastered this track from a couple of years ago. Originally written during the massive protests at the Wisconsin State capitol (see photo), but perhaps even more relevant now as the political situation further deteriorates.....
Original note: The political system is going haywire across our country, subverting the very nature of democracy. Unfortunately, this is preeminently obvious in our own state of Wisconsin, where our government is for sale to outside interests, conservative billionaires who secretly rule from the shadows and pull the strings of their puppets in power.  My opinion anyway. Wanted to give this track the kind of seering edge it deserves.

I wrote this song over the Thanksgiving Holiday in 2015--something really different for Penelope's Thrill--a kind of indie dance tune with a political message. This was soon after the November bombings in Paris and Beirut and other terrorist atrocities around the world--not to mention the plague of gun violence across the U.S. Thanks to my wife Barbara for the soaring soprano vocals. Andrew and I trade off singing the verses. Hope you like it! --Tim
