隣のショッピングモールからは、相変わらず人々のざわめきが聞こえてくる。

ベッドの上でまどろみながら、
わたしはふと――あの日の病室の白い天井を思い出していた。

あれから、どれだけの季節が巡ったのだろう。
45歳になった彼は、少し髪に白いものを交えていて、

そう言った先生の目が、少し潤んでいたのを覚えている。

わたしは、彼の手を握って、
まるで答え合わせのように、
これまでの人生を指でなぞっていた。

　あの日、君が図面を見せてくれたときに決めたの。
　この部屋で、最期を迎えようって。
　“さよなら”が必要のない部屋で、
　“ありがとう”だけ言える部屋で、終わろうって」

彼は泣いていた。
静かに、涙をこぼしていた。

でも、それは哀しみではなくて、
たぶん、共に生き抜いた重さの涙だった。
